About this Samsung Galaxy A51 review: I used the Galaxy A51 for 6 days on Google Fi. Throughout the review, the phone was running One UI 2.1 based on Android 10.
The Samsung Galaxy A51 is made of a material Samsung calls “Glass.” This gives a higher quality feel than pure plastic phones, but it doesn’t feel as premium as something like the Samsung Galaxy S21 series. It’s still plastic after all, although I didn’t mind it as much as the plastic on other phones in this price range. The phone is smooth but not slippery, and it’s light at just 158g. In comparison, the OnePlus 9 Pro weighs 197 grams.
The rim of the device is aluminum and has a high quality feel. On the right, you’ll find the power button and volume rockers, with a USB-C port, speakers, and a headphone jack below. The left side of the phone has a dual SIM card tray, which can handle two SIMs and an SD card up to 512GB. While most phones fold over a second slot to accept a SIM card or microSD card, the A51 has two dedicated SIM slots and a separate microSD card slot. Good to see.

I really like the crazy color and design on the back of the device. It’s really unique, and I appreciate phones with interesting colors. An example I have is Prism Crush Black, which gives off a rainbow-colored glow when hit by light from the right angle. It also comes in Prism Crush Blue and Prism Crush White, which offer the same rainbow-colored display.
The speakers on the phone were loud but there was no bass. I wouldn’t use the speakers to listen to music directly, although the headphone jack is a big plus.
For a phone under $400, the Samsung Galaxy A51 has an impressive display. Most mid-range smartphones use LCDs instead of OLED, but Samsung has managed to pack in a large OLED screen with a decent pixel count. This is a 1080p screen. Considering most smartphones come with 1080p mode by default, this didn’t bother me. Colors were bright and vibrant, typical of Samsung panels. That’s right.
The annoying thing about this display is the hole-punch camera cut into the middle of the phone. While I usually like the punch hole cutout, Samsung decided to put a silver ring around the camera, making it more visible than it would be without the ring. This is not for sale, but it’s worth watching even if the screen is off. I don’t understand why Samsung did this.

There is an in-display fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy A51. Unfortunately, the fingerprint reader is slow and inaccurate. It took about two seconds to register my fingerprint every time. Also, the accuracy rate is like 50% while I’m using the device, which is bad. You may be better off using the unlock pin or 2D face unlock option for speed and accuracy.
With a mid-range Exynos chip and only 4GB of RAM as standard, we didn’t expect great performance from the Samsung Galaxy A51. After using the device for a while and running our benchmarks, we confirmed our fears.
I haven’t said this about a phone in a while, but the Samsung Galaxy A51 is slow. You can feel slow opening apps and multitasking, and it often stutters when swiping around the UI. The phone used 1.9GB of the available 4GB of RAM even with all apps closed, which is a bad sign. In our tests, we concluded that current versions of Android need 6GB of RAM to run properly, and that was confirmed by this device.
In benchmarks, we saw a similar story. The phone still lags behind most devices in our tests. It has fallen far behind other mid-range monitors since launch, with the Snapdragon 700 series of smartphones outperforming the Galaxy A51’s Exynos processor. Check out the results below.
Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: A Mid Range Phone That Doesn’t Justify Its Price
The Samsung Galaxy A51 has a really big 4,000mAh battery. With a low powered CPU and less RAM, you expect the device to get killer battery life. And to be honest, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t as bad as it should have been. The call lasted about 29 hours, from 8AM one day to 1PM the next. This isn’t quite as good as phones with bigger batteries, but I’m glad it can last a full day. I got four and a half hours of screen time on this device.
The A51 supports 15W charging, which is not that fast. Considering the original Google Pixel supported 18W charging in 2016, this sounds pretty big in 2020. Samsung Galaxy S20 flagship devices charge at 25W fast these days, so I would have liked to see at least 18W on the Galaxy A51.
For a phone under $400, the Galaxy A51 has decent cameras and several of them are firsts. There’s a 48mp main sensor that captures 12MP photos, as well as a wide-angle and macro lens, a depth sensor, and a 32MP front-facing camera.
Dynamic range proved to be good for this camera set, although it felt like the images were underexposed – probably to prevent exposure. That being said, some camera systems can force the shadows to be too wide due to variable width, producing an annoying gray haze in the shadows. Samsung phones have always done this, so I was surprised to see the A51 doesn’t have it.
Samsung Galaxy A51, Hands On: Solid Mid Range Specs And Performance
Colors were generally good, but the A51 tends to add more colors like blues and greens. This can probably make the sky and plants stand out, but it can make other images look cartoonish. Samsung has been doing this with its camera systems, though, so I’m not really surprised.
The depth sensor seems to help a bit, and I’m glad it works for more than just people and animals. While the bokeh can look off, object detection and cropping were fine. I was surprised. The look of the hair remained blurry, but that’s normal for artificial bokeh. This model also moisturized the skin more than I wanted.
The selfie camera was also good, with dynamic quality and color. The input was good, although the colors are still too saturated like green and blue.
The MSRP of the Samsung Galaxy A51 has dropped to $399, and it can be offered for less. You can easily find a phone under $300 if you shop around. At that price, it’s hard to ignore the value Samsung is offering for the phone.

With the A51, you get a great screen, great build quality, some great cameras, and a headphone jack. It also offers three years of guaranteed software updates that ensure support until at least Android 12. However, although the build quality and screen are also good, the sub-par performance of this phone is its Achilles heel. And with a retail price of $349, the competition is very competitive.
The iPhone SE has Apple’s new processor and equally good build quality for the same price, and the Google Pixel 4a has a great Android experience and an amazing camera for $350. And if you want to spend more but not $1,000, Samsung is also offering the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, which has many of the same features as the fully loaded Galaxy S20 for $690 before it goes on sale. If you’re looking for something similar with less power, the Samsung Galaxy A71 is out now, as is the Galaxy A51 5G – an upgraded version of the A51 with a faster chipset and bigger battery.
If you like Samsung’s latest mid-range device, you can also check out the Galaxy A52 5G. It maintains solid build quality and plenty of battery life while upgrading to the Snapdragon 750G SoC. You’ll pay a bit more at $495, but the upgrade is worth the effort. Samsung hasn’t made many changes to the weak front cameras, but the move to 25W charging solves one of our biggest gripes with the Galaxy A51.
