Like the X1 4K HDR image processing engine that was introduced in last year’s Sony TVs, the XR cognitive processor does a remarkable job of upscaling sub-4K content. When streaming an HD movie, there is an amazing level of clarity with minimal image noise at all times. Of course, the X90J won’t make you think you’re watching real 4K content, but it will make Full HD material look as good as it gets.
For gaming, the X90J’s HDMI 2.1 support means it’s equipped for 4K 120Hz gaming. We’ve seen this in action with a number of supported PS5 games and were delighted with how nice they look. The game was extremely smooth and without any vibration.
That said, while the X90J actively advertises support for variable refresh rate (VRR), this feature is not yet available. Sony has promised that this feature will come in future updates, however, it said the same thing about HDMI 2.1 functionality on the XH90/X900H and it was months in the making.
