These phones retain the same DNA as their original counterparts but with upgraded internals and look set to make them more relevant in the second half of 2019. The Galaxy M30s (review), for example, offers 2 days of battery life and a 48-megapixel triple camera. Today we are reviewing the Galaxy A50s.

You may remember the Galaxy A50 (review) from earlier this year. It was a slim and attractive smartphone with features like an AMOLED display, an in-display fingerprint sensor and a solid battery life costing it less than Rs 20,000. The Galaxy A50s looks just as sleek, but perhaps with a more attractive design and upgraded hardware such as the new Exynos 9611 SoC and 48MP triple camera.

While the Galaxy A50 started at just under Rs 20,000, the Galaxy A50s is available for a slightly higher starting price of Rs 20,999. Is the Galaxy A50s packed enough to be worth buying under Rs 25,000? We review to find out.
Holding the Galaxy A50s in your hands will instantly remind you of the Galaxy A50. It provides the same sleep, thin and light body that we love in the original model. The Galaxy A50s is 7.7 mm thick and weighs only 166 grams, making it an extremely light and comfortable smartphone to hold. The slim form factor combined with the curved back panel gives a great feel in the hand.
The curved back panel is made of plastic, which is a bit disappointing for a phone priced above Rs 20,000. That said, the plastic body makes the phone light and comfortable to hold, so it’s a positive trade-off to have.
The biggest visual change comes on the panel itself, which gets a checkered pattern on the back, with each box offering a different shade of the same color. The Galaxy A50s comes in Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush White and Prism Crush Violet. The purple is definitely in the photos. I got the black version, which actually looks gray and has a prismatic gradient when viewed from different angles.

The Galaxy A50s is a tall phone that is easy to operate with one hand. Reaching the top of the display will require some adjustment of your grip, but the buttons are a good length and provide a very nice tactile feel. The volume keys and power button are on the right side of the thin edge. There is a SIM tray on the left side that can hold two nano SIM cards and a microSD card. At the bottom of the frame, a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a speaker grille are visible on either side of the Type-C port.
Samsung hasn’t changed anything when it comes to the display, and rightly so. The Galaxy A50 offers a beautiful 6.4-inch FHD + (2340×1080) Super AMOLED Infinity-U display, which also returns on the Galaxy A50s. It’s no surprise that the AMOLED display looks fantastic with vivid colors, excellent brightness levels and viewing angles.
The Galaxy A50s has a 1080p resolution that is sharp and clear for watching videos, playing games and reading text. An added bonus is that the phone is also Widevine L1 certified, which means you can stream content on platforms like Netflix and Prime Video in true HD.
Samsung uses the new Exynos 9611 SoC chipset clocked at 2.3GHz in the Galaxy A50s. The A50 gets the Exynos 9610. The difference between the two processors is small, so don’t expect a huge performance boost. The Exynos 9611 is based on the 10nm FinFET process and is equipped with the same Mali-G72 MP3 GPU as its predecessor.

Out of the box, the Galaxy A50s looks snappy, as you’d expect. Apps open and load quickly, and I haven’t experienced any crashes while using them. The 6GB RAM model we received for review can easily switch between apps, although you may experience some stuttering.
The Galaxy A50s performs well enough for everyday use, such as browsing the web or social media, messaging and video streaming. However, it won’t feel very fluid or smooth as you will notice some stuttering while scrolling through apps. It will run games like PUBG smoothly on medium graphics, but anything above that will result in lower frame rates and lag. The 10nm chipset is quite efficient and helps reduce battery drain during gaming.
Overall, the Galaxy A50s delivers decent mid-range performance, but you can expect a lot more from phones above Rs 20,000 today. The speed does not come close to what the Redmi K20 delivers in this segment. It even feels slower than the Realme XT, which costs around Rs 16,000. If you don’t push yourself too hard, the Galaxy A50s should work well, but you have to consciously hold yourself back.
The Galaxy A50s comes with One UI based on Android Pie. It is unclear when the phone will be updated to Android 10, but Samsung has been quite consistent in updating its portfolio to the latest version of Android. Now you know that One UI offers a system-wide dark mode, which the AMOLED display on the Galaxy A50s can enjoy.

One UI also provides a cleaner and smoother interface with a new layout that allows you to do most of the work with one hand. Aside from a few Samsung apps, Microsoft office apps, and third-party apps like Helo, DailyHunt, and Snapchat, you won’t find many viruses on the Galaxy A50s.
The Galaxy A50s comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor and facial recognition. Both biometric options are slower compared to those provided by brands such as Oppo, Realme and Vivo. For example, the fingerprint sensor works slowly, and the animations are not smooth at all. The bottom speaker can be loud, but not very clear at higher levels. The Galaxy A50s also supports Dolby Atmos surround sound via wired and Bluetooth headphones.
Samsung has updated the three cameras in the Galaxy A50s. While the A50 offered a 25-megapixel primary camera, the Galaxy A50s gets a 48-megapixel sensor, keeping it in line with the competition. The other two cameras in the package include an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The selfie camera has also been increased from 25MP to 32MP.
The Galaxy A50s cameras look absolutely capable of taking on the likes of the Redmi K20 and Realme XT. Their main camera is capable of taking some really nice photos in daylight, which is no surprise. Provided you have enough light in your environment, the Galaxy A50s will take attractive photos.

However, in low light the phone starts to struggle. The special night mode still does not provide the computer photography that Oppo and Xiaomi can provide. Photos will look grainy despite the noise reduction doing its best, and the overall image will be softer than sharp and detailed.
You can easily switch between the main camera and the wide-angle lens to add more space to the frame. The wide angle recording is useful in tight spaces or when you are looking for a new perspective. Be aware that the quality degrades when you switch to the 8MP wide-angle lens. Compared to a high-resolution primary camera, wide-angle photos will lack detail and sharpness. There is also a noticeable change in color tone and the photo will look darker compared to the main camera.
The Galaxy A50s can shoot clear and beautiful videos in 1080p and 4K. It can record 4K video at 30fps, which looks pretty good, but will be shakier compared to 1080p recording. The camera gets some EIS (electronic stabilization) when recording at 1080p, which is decent enough if you’re shooting handheld while walking.
The upgraded front-facing camera also takes some clear and natural-looking selfies in daylight when the beautification effects are turned off. The sharpness and clarity of selfies will decrease when it gets dark, indoors or after sunset.

Samsung didn’t feel the need to upgrade the battery in the Galaxy A50s. It has the same 4000mAh capacity as the original A50, which is good. The Galaxy A50s will last you a full day on a single charge, but don’t expect the phone to last much longer. I found the battery life to be pretty consistent no matter what I did throughout the day. Standby battery drain is minimal and you can use the Always On Display without worrying about a significant battery drain.
