When you sign up for Three broadband, you’ll need to enter your postcode on the Three website, just like when you buy a regular broadband deal. Using this information, Tri can check if you have a good mobile network in your area, ensuring you’ll get good speeds with your new home broadband device.
Once ordered, you will receive your new 4G Hub router in the mail within 1-2 business days, along with a SIM card that you will need to insert into the router. Tri won’t have to send an engineer to your address – you can set up your connection whenever you want.
You have the option to return the router to Tri after 30 days if you are not satisfied with the quality of service provided, as long as the 4G Hub is in “as new” condition.

Tri also sells a 5G Hub router, at a higher price. This device uses the 5G network to deliver even faster speeds than the Tri 4G Hub.
The device is not large, but it is not small either, and it has a decent weight. It feels very similar to your typical WiFi router. It stands on a small base, instead of lying flat like some other types of WiFi routers.
To start using the Three 4G Hub, the first thing you need to do is insert a SIM card into the device. You want the biggest SIM card they send you, not a smaller micro or nano SIM card that you can also throw out.
Once you have the SIM, slide it into its slot as shown until you hear it click into place.

Next, turn on your 4G router and turn it on using the switch on the back to the right of the power port.
Setting up the hub will take about three minutes. When it is ready, the indicator lights on the right will turn blue. If they turn green instead, it means you’re only getting a 3G signal, instead of a 4G signal.
At this stage, you can connect to WiFi using the router-based details or plug in an Ethernet cable to get a wired internet connection. You can also plug in an external antenna if you want, but we found it not necessary – the included internal antenna works well and gives you a good signal.

Using a wired connection between the 4G hub and our computer, we achieved a download speed of 199 Mbps and an upload speed of 43 Mbps.

This was the best test we could get in one day, about five attempts in total. Sometimes the speed would drop in the 50-75 Mbps range, but it didn’t go lower than this.
It is important to note that we have very good 4G coverage at our address – the mast is about 50 meters from us, in a very elevated location. We also live in an area where there is currently no 4G congestion.
Before you buy a Three 4G Hub, be sure to use their network coverage map to check for a good indoor and outdoor 4G signal at your address. Your speeds may be slower than what we were able to achieve.
We experienced very little sign of lag in each game and no noticeable lag variation when we connected the 4G Nbubo to our PC via the included Ethernet cable.

Our gaming experience was very smooth, with our ping to nearby servers staying in the 20-30ms range. This is about 5-10ms more than what we get with our regular broadband connection, but this slight increase in latency didn’t noticeably affect our gaming performance.

Tri’s broadband offerings are actually quite flexible. The 4G Hub is available on 24 or 12 month plans, each of which comes with unlimited data, so you don’t have to worry about usage caps.

When it comes to pricing and value for money, using a 4G hub is cheaper than most similar fixed broadband plans. If you sign up for a 12 or 24 month contract, your monthly costs will be very reasonable.
However, be sure to read the prices and terms carefully. Tri often offers this device at a discounted price for the first six months – at the end of this period, your monthly cost will increase, something you should be aware of.
Also, Tri will increase the monthly price of your broadband every April, at a rate of 4.5%. This is important to note, especially if you are buying a long-term contract.

If for any reason you are not satisfied with the service, you can return your Hub to Tri within 30 days, as long as the device is in “as new” condition.
Basically, this allows you to test Tri Broadband and see if it offers good speeds and reliability at your address. During this time, it’s a good idea to put the Hub through its paces, including testing games (if there are gamers in the house) and streaming video to multiple devices simultaneously.
Also, be sure to test your router in the evening to see if there is network congestion in your area. In some parts of the UK, Tri Broadband may be oversubscribed, although this is not a major problem in most areas.
This means that you can use this device with another SIM card if you want, even before the contract expires.

The 4G Hub has some drawbacks. While our gaming experience was very smooth, latency isn’t perfect and you don’t get the minimum speed guarantee that some broadband providers offer. You also need to be careful to make sure you place your router in the right place in your house to get high speeds.
However, you have the option to test the router for a month to make sure you’re getting good download and upload speeds and return it if performance isn’t up to par.
You can also take your 4G Hub and use it in your caravan or on holiday in the UK. Unlike some competing products, such as Vodafone, you are not limited in where you can use your Hub router.
Overall, we rate Three home broadband 4.5 out of 5. For many UK households, Three offers a fast, cost-effective method of keeping up at home.
