I’m still in shock that you can buy a smartphone for as little as £245 with an enameled amoled screen and two days of battery life. For anyone who loves content on their phones, the Samsung Galaxy M31 is an absolute boon, and not just because you don’t expect it elsewhere.

LG’s A-series smartphones are a staple in most UK stores, and rightly so. It was intended for the same large mid-range audience currently being followed by Xiaomi and OnePlus. And yet the Galaxy M series is much less recognizable, despite being a key part of its global product line.

The hugely popular Galaxy M smartphones in India are trying to offer premium features in an accessible way – at least that’s how it is on paper. The series recently received an overhaul in 2019, with one of these handsets – the Samsung Galaxy M31 – entering the UK market.
The Galaxy series has done a pretty decent job with the mid-range space, but can Samsung pull the same trick again as it’s still falling down the price scale? It’s time to find out.
At 159.2 x 75.1 x 8.9mm and weighing 191g, the Galaxy M31 is a hefty phone by today’s standards. Recently accustomed to the light weight of the Pixel 3a XL, the M31 was a mammoth by comparison. But when there’s a sense of weight in the extra weight, you know it’s a solid product, even if it’s on the affordable end of the spectrum.
Inside that space, the phone sports a 6.4-inch screen topped with a waterdrop notch and a minimal chin bezel at the bottom. At just £245, I’m blown away by how sharp the phone’s front elements are. There is also a 3.5 mm headphone jack (though on the bottom).

However, once you flip the phone, things start to look a little different. For starters, the M31’s plastic back is completely fingerprint-free, and the sleek body itself doesn’t hold your hand very well. If you’re not absolutely sure of your unmistakable ability to never drop your phone, we recommend reading the case just in case.
While the camera is a slight bump here, the quad-sensor camera array is barely noticeable, whether the phone is in your pocket or laying face-up on the screen.
As with the series, Samsung’s marketing for the M line was focused on three main features: screen, camera, and battery life. While you’ll get to those two soon, I’m happy to report that Samsung has had success with the screen on the M31, arguably the phone’s best feature (price aside).
The aforementioned 6.4-inch screen will use a notched 2340 x 1080 AMOLED panel, ensuring that whatever’s on the screen, whether it’s minutes or a second run of Netflix’s The Last Dance (respect), always pops.

Of course, even at the highest FHD+ resolution, there’s nothing better than looking at fullscreen when you need to get some work done. Sure, it’s a little dated compared to what’s on the shelf right now, but it’s still there.
The only other minor issue is that, unlike the new Moto G 5G Plus, it has a basic 60Hz screen. But given how few phones at this price point have made the jump to 90Hz so far, the omission is forgivable.
The Pixel 3a XL has an optimized and near-improved version of Android 10. Samsung’s custom skin feels clunky, though it’s not the worst.
There’s a small screen, for example, except for Samsung’s own plethora of apps, which tend to have their own uses, although why I would ever need to use the Galaxy store when there’s the Google App Store is beyond me.

Luckily, the M31 still performs well despite the affordable price. This is due to the Samsung Exynos 9611 SoC and a solid 6GB of RAM under the hood. Don’t expect the M31 to be lightning fast, but this setup makes it pretty decent where it is.
For example, the dedicated fingerprint sensor is fast and efficient (perhaps better than some of the in-screen fingerprint sensors I’ve come across in more expensive phones). The same goes for face unlock, with a little animation going on just below the front camera to let you know it’s doing its thing.
However, a recurring problem was an inexplicable incompatibility with some wearables. While this seems to have leveled off after a few software updates, the phone initially dropped connection to my Whoop 3.0 Band and TicWatch C2 Plus smartwatches regularly. Unless you’re a speculator, this will probably never happen, but for a health fanatic like me, the pain has become even more regal.
If you enjoy playing mobile games during your lunch break, then the M31 will have you covered with most games – just don’t expect to ever run Fortnite on it. As the launcher has repeatedly shown, the Galaxy M31 is not one of the phones optimized for playing Fortnite, and the game was a choppy, barely playable mess. Surprisingly, though, the M31 played an online match in Call of Duty: Mobile without issue and performed well in smaller games like Alto’s Odyssey.

Blame it on the fact that my aging laptop doesn’t have an active Wi-Fi connection, but in this new homework environment, I use my phone as my primary device for zoom calls, listening to music, tracking my indoor workouts, and browsing fluff on YouTube at lunchtime. Suffice it to say, I put the Galaxy M31 to the test, but it’s an impressive battle.
With a whopping 6,000mAh battery, the Galaxy M31 barely lasted two days on a single charge, despite being connected to Wi-Fi most of that time, with Bluetooth connected to many wearables and a pair of wireless headphones as standard. . That is, use in heavy activities, which I advised above. Simply put, you have to be a serious procrastinator to even consider completely draining your battery in one day.

The only disappointment has to be the inclusion of 15W fast charging, which I beg to disagree with. When plugged into an outlet, it only took two hours to reach full coverage at 8%. I can understand the appeal of not having a wide-angle sensor, but if it’s only going to do the job, I’d rather have those capabilities in the main sensor.
