The Galaxy M31 is the successor to the Galaxy M30s and aims to deliver a good smartphone experience with all the featured features that come with it. But is the Galaxy M30 worth the upgrade and is it a strong contender for budget rings? Read my review to find out.

Samsung Galaxy M31 Review: Megastar In The Budget Category

The Samsung Galaxy M31 is designed to be simple and suitable for an affordable smartphone. There is not much going on, but everything on the plate is still a feast for the eyes. When I first picked up the Galaxy M31, it felt quite bulky. But once I got used to my hand, I eventually found it to be light. Made of polycarbonate, the device is available in two color options: Ocean Blue and Space Black. I received the black one and I love the classic black tones of the device. You can never go wrong with a smartphone or anything painted black. Although there is no glass on the back of the smartphone, it does not fall short in the design competition and offers a sleek, affordable yet durable design.

Built into the rear of the Galaxy M31 is a rectangular camera module in the upper left corner. The camera setup consists of three camera sensors and an LED flash. There is a fingerprint scanner in the middle and Samsung branding at the bottom. The front has a waterdrop notch at the top and less bezels. The chin has a 3.5mm audio jack, a USB Type-C port and a speaker grill (from left to right). There is nothing in the head. On the left side of the smartphone is the SIM card slot and on the left is the volume rocker and power button. When it comes to the volume button, it is located quite high, so it was not easy to reach, like every other smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy M31 is not a smartphone with a perfect design and does not offer new features. But it looks nice and I give it a good rating for simplicity.

The Samsung Galaxy M31 features a 6.4-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display known as the Infinity-U display. It got its name because it has a notch in the shape of a water drop. It is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which is a bit disappointing. The smartphones have several display features that are present in most Samsung smartphones. Adaptive brightness, blue light filter, dark mode, vivid and natural screen color selection, always-on display, accidental touch protection, touch sensitivity and more. All the display features are proven to be useful, but accidental touch protection doesn’t really offer any protection as accidental access to the device is easy.

Samsung Galaxy M51 Review With Pros And Cons

The display experience is more than okay and this is an area where Samsung does not excel. For an affordable smartphone, you get a screen that’s a joy to use. The screen is bright enough, not too big or too small. The Infinity-U display provides the right screen size for both usability and video streaming. Watching content on YouTube or Netflix or any other related streaming service was great. Smartphones have delighted those more engrossed in watching Netflix on their TVs (the Amazon Fire Stick is a boon here), and that’s a plus for the Galaxy M31.

Starting with the camera configuration, the Galaxy M31 has a quad-camera setup on the back. It has a primary 64MP snapper, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, a 5MP depth sensor and a 5MP macro lens. It has a 32 MP front camera. The smartphone supports multiple camera features such as 4K video recording, super slow motion video, super steady mode, LED flash, HDR mode, night mode and more.

My one word about the Galaxy M31 camera is fine. The camera works well in most all lighting conditions, which is a plus. The downside is grainy images in indoor scenarios (zoomed in, of course). We often get detailed images and the results are not overprocessed either. However, they reflect oversaturated tones. The ultra-wide lens is pretty decent, like other Samsung smartphones, and the HDR mode works well. However, the macro lens is really choppy and doesn’t capture as much detail as I expected. Best of all, Night Mode works well without being spectacular, and Live Focus works well but is variable like a macro lens.

The 32MP front shooter is pretty decent. There is less embellishment and more details. But even in this case, the image shifts to a warmer tone, which is somewhat disappointing. The video department is doing well. Super Steady mode delivers the stability it claims to offer, 4K video is decent (recorded at 360fps) and slow motion is above average.

These Samsung Galaxy Phone Users Are Facing Auto Restart Issue

The Samsung Galaxy M31 is paired with the company’s Exynos 9611 processor and 6GB of RAM. The smartphone has two internal memory variants of 64 GB and 128 GB, of which we chose the latter. The storage space can be expanded up to 512 GB using a memory card. Smartphones are decent daily drivers. I’m a “smartphone basic” person and don’t keep the device until it’s over. So for me, the Galaxy M31 was more than okay. From using social media to streaming videos, playing games (both PUBG Mobile and Candy Crush Saga) and clicking photos, everything was done with ease and I didn’t see much of a problem with the smartphone. However, there were instances of stuttering and lag in the background of several apps. This is greatly reduced to a simple “collapse animation” trick in the settings menu. FYI, this trick also worked well for my Galaxy S10 Lite.

The battery is the main highlight of the Galaxy M31. With a capacious 6000 mAh battery, the Galaxy M31 definitely stands out in the budget segment. The battery I used easily lasted two days and I found myself at peace on a single charge. One problem I faced was the loading which was not that fast. The 15W fast charging didn’t charge the device too quickly, so expect Samsung to focus on this area in its mid-range smartphones as well.

As for the user interface, I came to like Samsung UI 2.0 on the Galaxy S10 Lite and will continue to stick with it. The user interface is clean and easy to navigate. Focus mode, digital well-being, parental control, dark mode and some gestures did not cause any problems with the smartphone interface. What I didn’t like though were the multiple preloaded apps (bloatware) and this time I didn’t like their presence. Among other things, the fingerprint scanner and face unlock were fast and the sound quality was decent. But I’ve been missing headphones with a box, and I think Samsung should eventually start adding them to their mid-range smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy M31 starting at Rs. 14,999 is another step by Samsung to maintain its leadership position in the budget segment. And that’s not a bad attempt considering the massive 6000mAh battery steals the show this time around. However, upgrading to the Galaxy M30s is not a good idea as both smartphones share most of the features. It competes with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, which has a MediaTek Helio G90T processor and Corning Gorilla Glass 5, and the Realme XT, which has an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Samsung Galaxy A Series

The Galaxy M31 has a few misses compared to its rivals, but it’s no less a smartphone, so aside from the battery, it’s an option worth considering for its UI (better than MIUI’s) and decent camera.

The Galaxy M31 entered the big Indian smartphone market right after the chaos of GST hikes, COVID-19 chaos and soaring exchange rates. Samsung’s latest M31s belong to the affordable segment, which has been at the center of this mess. However, not everything works against Samsung. Anti-China sentiment and a campaign to boycott Chinese goods have turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the South Korean giant.
