This really is the quintessential Samsung – the phone you buy when nothing else is enough. In fact, it goes so far as to mimic the functionality of the S-Pen — perhaps the biggest difference between the company’s two lines.
In many ways, it – and all S21 models – is a logical addition to the product line. Samsung has yet to break the mold. But the company didn’t have to. This line is still one of the best Android devices you can buy. With this, mobile phone manufacturers are returning to the areas they know where they fight their battles – ie. Aside from the functionality of the S-Pen Ultra, most of the improvements for this generation are on the camera side. No surprises, of course. The camera is always Samsung-centric – although the biggest changes involve the software, which is increasingly common with many manufacturers.
However, there are some hardware changes to consider. As such, the new S models represent one of the biggest changes in recent times. I mentioned in my previous article that I have doubts about them, the main reason for the strange wrinkle of the 2020/2021 blogs: the inability to see the device in person. Now that I’ve been selling things on the streets of New York for a few days, I can safely say I’m pretty good at it, I think.
The big housing for cutting contour cameras stands out the most. I’m pretty sure I used the word “brutal” last time. After using this product I can say it is worth it. There is something… corporate about the decision making process. And it’s actually mentioned on the Ultra, which has four camera holes, including a laser sensor for autofocus and a flash. It’s a big, high-end camera built from an incredibly thick metal frame. I think this is partly due to the “curved” telephoto lens.
Samsung sent the Phantom Black version. This model is something the company has given a surprisingly long time to during its announcement. Curved screen looks good, normal, clear and rounded corners. The screen itself is amazing – Samsung screens always are. The screens on the S21, S21+ and S21 Ultra are 6.2, 6.7 and 6.8 inches. All are unchanged except for the Ultra, which is an incredible 0.1 inches smaller than before. It doesn’t look like much, but it’s an unusual choice from a company that has always insisted that bigger is better when it comes to screens.
The Eye Comfort Shield is a welcome addition that adjusts the screen temperature based on the time of day and your usage. If you’ve used Night Shift or something similar, you know what you can do – the screen will slowly shift to the yellow-white end of the spectrum and reduce blue light so you don’t lose your rotation settings. It is off by default, so you need to change it in the settings.
The company has also introduced a Dynamic Refresh Rate feature that varies between 46 and 120 Hz depending on the software you’re using. This is designed to save battery life (120Hz along with 5G can be a big problem). The results are subtle. I can’t say I noticed much in my use. I really appreciate the efforts to find new ways to get extra water.
Samsung’s new era is also known for what it left behind. The new S models mark the end of an era when the company finally ditches larger dump units (following the Z line). I mean, I understand. These devices have 128 to 512 GB of storage. For most users, the microSD card reader was overkill. I didn’t need to use it. According to the company: “Over time, the use of SD cards in mobile phones has declined significantly as we have expanded the storage options available to consumers.”

Of course, expanding the built-in memory will cost you. However, it is often difficult to say that you should part with a long-term differential factory. Speaking of which, the company also ditched the earphones in the box and the power adapter, mostly to get rid of some ads, mocking Apple for doing the same thing recently. It is a repeatable sound recorder.
The company also issued similar regulatory information in a recent statement. “We realized that many Galaxy users are reusing devices they already own and making sustainable choices in their daily lives to encourage good recycling habits.” As a result, the box is almost half the size of the old S series for what it’s worth.

Images have been improved. There is still the problem of a very complex interface, but this is a problem I have encountered with many solutions. Samsung gets a point here as it offers a huge amount of image customization after taking the photo, from different levels of blur to changing the scene and more. As with most camera apps, there’s a lot to play with.
Other great additions include 8K snap, a nice addition that lets you capture stunning photos from a single frame of 8K video. There is also a Vlogger Mode that records from the front and back at the same time. Someone will surely find a social service for this, but it sounds stupid – one of the things that many users immediately forget. The extra options are generally good, although the camera software has gotten to the point where it’s a huge deal to wade through.
I understand that many users want a way to quickly take photos and record videos. The lower notes of the S21 are good for this. The hardware is powerful enough to give you great shots with minimal effort. If you’re someone who likes to dig into things and get the best images on the device without having to send them to a third-party app, the Ultra is your choice. In addition to being a kitchen sink type, a high-end appliance is optional.

The addition of the S Pen feature is probably the most notable – and interesting – thing the Ultra does. At first glance, it appears to be the latest – and most cited – sequel to successfully blur the lines between the two flagships. Perhaps Samsung will do something to differentiate the next Note, or the company is content to let the device sit idle for a while.
