Last year, three of the five best-selling phones worldwide were Samsung phones, according to Counterpoint Research, behind the iPhone XR and 11 in third, fourth and fifth place. If you live in America, when you think. Samsung, you might think of the Galaxy S or the Note – but the Samsung phones that sell best are the midrange Galaxy A-series phones.

Samsung is making a big push to sell more of these phones in the US with the $399 Galaxy A51. That price puts it in direct competition with the iPhone SE, but there are plenty of other Android phones that come in under $500. What makes the A51 different is Samsung’s marketing budget and partnerships. It’s available unlocked on Amazon and Samsung’s website, which is important for Samsung midrange devices, and also on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and Xfinity Mobile.

Compared to the iPhone SE, the main attraction of the A51 is its screen, a large 6.5-inch OLED. Samsung is saying that the phone is “beautiful” in three specifications: screen, camera,

Battery life. He even created an ad full of bonkers memes to drive those points home. (You should watch it because the ad is really awesome.) The Galaxy A51, unfortunately, isn’t so good.

The Galaxy A51 doesn’t look or feel like a cheap phone at all. That’s all well and good. Samsung says the material it’s made of is called “Glastick,” which sounds a lot more than it feels. It almost feels like glass, but it has a little bit of what you get from plastic.

It comes with 128GB of internal storage, which is very generous for $399. Additionally, you can expand it with microSD storage. There’s also a headphone jack, which is a welcome inclusion at any price but it’s a little more substantial than usual.

Should You Buy Samsung Galaxy A51 In 2021?

My favorite part of the Galaxy A51 is the screen. It’s just a well-designed 6.5-inch OLED, bright even in sunlight. If you’re looking for the latest screen technology — like colors that adjust to ambient light, high refresh rates, or even super high resolution — look elsewhere. But at 1080 x 2400, there are more than enough pixels, even on this screen size. I’ve seen big screens for less on Android phones, and this isn’t one of them.

Every phone is a bargain, and $399 phones cost more than $1,000. So phone manufacturers need to choose their priorities, and Samsung has clearly nailed the screen. Because it’s something people see and interact with hundreds of times a day, it’s a good thing to choose.

But I can nitpick – not about the screen but what’s underneath it – specifically, the selfie hole camera. I have no problem with pinhole cameras. In fact, I generally prefer them to markers of any size. But for inexplicable reasons, Samsung puts a small chrome ring around the camera. It catches on some edges when the light hits it like this, so it’s hard to see. It is strange.

Another feature below the screen is an optical fingerprint sensor. I’m not sure if Samsung just doesn’t have enough reps in these sensors or what, but it’s extremely slow. It may take as little as a second for the green animation to flash its way through to let you know the phone is unlocked. Not the most accurate sensor, especially in direct sunlight.

Galaxy A51 Is Tragic Proof That Samsung Can’t Beat The Iphone Se

Unfortunately, this diagnosis extends to the processor and RAM. In the US, most familiar Samsung phones use Qualcomm processors, but this A51 uses the Samsung Exynos 9611, a midrange chip that isn’t up to the task of making this phone feel fast. Apps take a long time to load – especially if they haven’t been opened recently so they aren’t already active in the 4GB of RAM.

Once you’re in a browser or app, things move along at a decent enough clip. But every now and then, you struggle to render the screen or load the next item in your feed.

As I said, different phone manufacturers have to choose their preferences on these low-cost phones. Apple, for example, kept the same old iPhone 8 body with a smaller screen and larger bezels for the iPhone SE, but inserted the fastest mobile processor available: the A13 Bionic. Samsung chose a different approach.

Battery life is good, but doesn’t quite live up to Samsung’s claim that it’s “long-lasting.” I’m getting a little more a day – better than I can do on the iPhone SE for sure. But with a 4,000mAh cell and a 1080p screen, I’m a little surprised it didn’t do much better. In theory, these specs should add something more impressive, and I wonder if that Exynos processor is partly to blame.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: Great Screen And Price, But The Rest Is Just Okay

Finally, there is the camera system, which contains more lenses than necessary. The main lens has a 48-megapixel sensor that automatically captures 12-megapixel photos. These pictures are, like almost any camera these days, quite decent in good light. I was pleasantly surprised to see good white balance, which Samsung rarely has. But Samsung’s other bad trend of unnaturally removing shadows still persists.

You probably know what’s coming: it gets worse in low light — worse than the iPhone SE, in fact. And when you really zoom in on the details on the A51, there’s a lot more blur than you’ve got on other smartphone cameras – including at 48 megapixels.

There’s a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera and a 5-megapixel macro camera, each of which is more about having fun than getting great shots. Fun is good! I enjoy using these cameras. There’s also a “5-megapixel” depth camera that doesn’t seem useful at all, at least as far as portrait mode is concerned. Finally, the selfie camera is 32 megapixels, and produces photos that often look over-processed.

Finally, the software. Samsung’s One UI customizations on Android continue to make the big screen phone more fun. But Samsung’s willingness to allow carriers to pack their phones with crapware also continues: My Verizon-based review unit was absolutely loaded with games and services no one would want. I also want to say that I trust this phone to get software updates more than two or three years.

Galaxy A51 Review: Samsung Beats The Iphone Se In These Important Ways

Of the three “awesome” things that Samsung promised, I think the Galaxy A51 only hits half of them. The screen is great, the battery life is great, and the camera doesn’t disappoint. The Pixel 3A (and, presumably, the upcoming 4A) and iPhone SE surprise with how good their cameras are for $399. But the A51’s photos definitely look like they come from a mid-range phone.

It’s hard to make a good $400 phone, and none of them can excel in every possible metric. But you want at least some parts of the phone to feel like they came from something more expensive. Apart from the screen, the Galaxy A51 isn’t quite as impressive.

Every smart device now needs to agree to a series of terms and conditions before using it — agreements that no one actually reads. It is impossible for us to read and analyze each of these contracts. But we’ve started counting how many times you have to “agree” to use the device when we review them because those are contracts that most people can’t read and certainly can’t negotiate.

There are many discretionary agreements. If you use the carrier-specific version, there will be more of them. Here are just a few:

There may be others. For example, I already had a Samsung account, so I didn’t need to agree to any more terms for it. Samsung’s Weather app also has its own privacy policy that may include sharing information with Weather.com.

Finally, if you have the carrier version of the A51. The Verizon edition we tested has options for Verizon location, app info, cloud services, and even a “Digital Safe” virus service—none of which are necessary but all of which are persistent and annoying during the installation process.

Final analysis: There are four mandatory agreements, about eight optional agreements that I expect most users will agree to, and four or more carrier agreements that I expect most users will say no to.
