With that out of the way, smartphone makers are returning to a familiar place where they will fight their battles – imaging. Aside from the performance of the S-Pen Ultra, this generation’s top notch improvements come on the camera side. No wonder of course. The camera remains Samsung’s focus – although the changes mostly revolve around the software, which is a growing trend for many manufacturers.
However, there are some hardware changes worth noting. Namely, the new S models represent one of the biggest aesthetic updates in recent memory. This is designed to save some battery life (120Hz and 5G can be a big power hog). The effect is subtle. I can’t say I really noticed it during my use. I really appreciate the effort in finding new ways to get more juice.
Samsung’s new era is equally remarkable for what it left behind. The new S models mark the end of an era as the company finally ditches expandable storage (and follows in the footsteps of the Z line). I mean I understand. These devices range from 128 to 512 GB of storage. For many users, the MicroSD reader was overkill. I’ve certainly never needed it. According to the company, “SD card usage in smartphones has declined significantly over time as we have expanded the storage options available to consumers.”

Of course, expanding the built-in memory will cost you. More often than not, however, saying goodbye to a long-divisive industry is always a luxury. Random movement tends to increase further as you tighten the image. Super Steady is also optimized for video recording.
Portrait mode has been improved. It’s still often a problem with complex situations, but that’s the problem I’ve encountered with all the solutions. Samsung scores well here by offering a ton of post-capture image editing, from varying levels of bokeh to adjusting the focus area for other effects. As with most camera software, there’s a lot to play with.
Other notable additions include 8K Snap, a nifty addition that lets you capture great-looking photos in a single frame of 8K video. There’s also a vlogger mode that captures the front and back at the same time. You’ll no doubt find some public use for it, but it feels snazzy – one of those features that most users will quickly forget. More options are usually a good thing, although the camera software has gotten to a point where there are a lot of menus to navigate.
I have a feeling that many users are looking for a way to quickly take pictures and videos. The lower entrance of the S21 is good for this. The hardware is strong enough to make great recordings with minimal effort. If you’re someone who really likes to strip down the features and get the best images on the device without exporting to a third-party app, Ultra is the option for you. Aside from being a type of sink in the kitchen, the top appliance is all about choice.
