Update Samsung A50 Release Review

In April, Samsung announced an update to the Galaxy A series, a family of budget phones ready to compete with Apple’s latest iPhone SE for 2020. Although some models have new features like 5G, they are all under $400 and have headphone jacks. One of the new phones, the Galaxy A51, follows the 2019 Galaxy A50.

Samsung Galaxy A50 Review: Still One Of The Best Budget Phones

The Samsung Galaxy A50 has a solid camera, an in-screen fingerprint reader, a headphone jack and a long battery – all at an affordable price.

The phone can be buggy at times, the maximum video resolution is only 1080p and the speaker quality is tinny.

Although not as water-repellent as the Moto G7, the Galaxy A50 is worth the extra $50 for its superior camera and long-lasting battery.

The Galaxy A50 from 2019 may not be as beautiful as the latest Galaxy S20 phones or as cool looking as the Z Flip. But at $350 at launch and now discounted by Samsung to $300, the A50 is one of the best Android phones under $400 to come out in the last year. (For more phones under $500, check out our roundup.)

Another option is the Motorola Moto G7, which started at $300 (£189, AU$349), but you can now get it for less (in the US, Motorola is currently selling it for $230). For the past few years, Motorola’s G series has consistently ranked as our favorite phone and the G7 continues that legacy as a great phone for its price.

Overall, we still like the Moto G7. It’s a great, affordable phone, and it won our Editors’ Choice for its affordable price, great camera, and reliable performance. But I think the Galaxy A50 is better, even if it costs more. As a result, it earned an Editors’ Choice. If you have an extra $70, go for the Galaxy A50 over the Moto G7. Although it doesn’t shoot 4K video and I’m not a big fan of the Samsung UI one, the A50’s superior camera, slim design and long battery life make it a better phone.

Although both phones are similar in size and design, there are a few details that elevate the Galaxy A50 over the Moto G7. For example, the Moto G7 has a large rear camera. Having a bump is not a problem, and many phones have it including the iPhone. The camera on the Galaxy A50 is very red, looks flat and very good. The camera notch on the screen for the front-facing camera is small, so it’s less noticeable when looking at the display. Finally, since the Galaxy A50 has an in-screen fingerprint scanner, the device looks very sleek. The Moto G7, on the other hand, has a visible reader on the back with the Motorola logo on it (and has the Motorola logo on the front, on the bottom bezel), which is unappealing.

Additionally, the Galaxy A50 has an AMOLED display compared to the Moto G7’s LCD screen. Although both phones have the same resolution and pixel density, the screen of the Galaxy A50 is brighter and the colors are brighter. Blacks are darker and much inkier. When you look at the two phones from different angles, the color shift is worse on the Moto G7 as well. That means colors are incredibly washed out and the screen appears black at certain angles.

Another advantage that the Moto G7 has is that it is less waterproof. You can’t completely submerge it under water, but it has a nano-coating that protects it from light water splashes and splashes. Samsung didn’t add water protection to the A50.

Both the Galaxy A50 and Moto G7 take clear and bright photos when the conditions are right, such as settings with the same brightness. And while the Galaxy A50 can only record 1080p video (compared to the Moto G7’s 4K resolution), the Galaxy A50’s camera is still ahead of the Moto G7 in many ways.

Images are sharp, so you can see better details on things like leaves and bricks. In low light, the A50 is bright and vibrant with colors, while photos taken with the G7 are muddier and hazier with washed-out colors. The A50 also has a wider dynamic range, meaning scenes with different lighting conditions are more evenly displayed compared to the Moto G7. I did notice that there were times when the HDR effect on the A50 looked fake, but I preferred it over the Moto G7 though. The Galaxy A50 has a second wide-angle camera, which means you get more content in every frame. This helps if you want to capture more scenes and beauty as well.

Although you can’t tell from the photos, this real life scene is terrible. The Galaxy A50 (left) hits colors better than the Moto G7 (right). Lynn La/

Both phones capture the bokeh effect in photos equally well and the fall between foreground and background looks nice and natural. You can take pictures with the front camera on both phones. When I took a selfie, both phones showed the sweetness around my hair. However, I prefer the Galaxy A50 photo because the white balance is more accurate.

Unlike the Moto G7 though, the A50 can’t shoot 4K video. It does, however, shoot 1080p video, and videos at that resolution are similar to the Moto G7. Objects are sharp, colors are true to life and audio is clear. While I don’t care about 4K movies at home, if you want to capture sharp and bright video and have a 4K display, the Moto G7 is the choice between the two.

Samsung Galaxy A52s 5g Smartphone Review: With More Power In Its Latest Version

In our benchmark tests, the Galaxy A50 consistently beats the Moto G7. But in real life, you won’t notice much of a difference in speed between the two, and my day-to-day experience with both was smooth. There were times though when I encountered the occasional hiccup on the Galaxy A50. For example, apps quit unexpectedly sometimes or won’t start. And the fingerprint reader takes an hour or two longer than usual to unlock the phone. Again, most of the time the Galaxy A50 performs well, but since its processor is not top-of-the-line, you may notice the same channels I did.

The Samsung phone is equipped with a higher battery and lasts longer than the Moto G7. During laboratory tests of continuous video playback in airplane mode, the phone lasted an average of more than 17 hours and 17 minutes. The Moto G7 lasted just 12 hours and 51 minutes.

One thing to note is that both phones use a bottom speaker for audio. Their audio quality is obviously not comparable to high-end phones, but I noticed that the audio from the Moto G7 is louder and wider compared to the Galaxy A50. In contrast, the sound from the Samsung phone is not good and sounds harsh and small.

The Galaxy A50 and Moto G7 both run Android, but Samsung and Motorola have put up a higher take on the OS, respectively. I like the Moto G7’s UI better; it’s closer to stock Android, it feels more organized and easier to use and the icons and menus look better. If you don’t like any of the phone’s UIs, you can easily download a third-party launcher to change it.

Samsung Galaxy A50 And Galaxy A30 Review

The Galaxy A50 has some additional features though. In addition to Google Pay and Google Assistant (on the Moto G7), you get Samsung Pay and Bixby. Samsung Pay is compatible with many payment terminals (for more information, read Apple Pay vs. Google Pay and Samsung Pay comparison) and Bixby is another digital voice assistant that you can use to get basic information and make payments.shortcut. Even if you can’t use these services — I personally don’t use Bixby as much as I use Assistant — the A50 gives you plenty of options.

Samsung’s policy of major OS upgrades for most Galaxy devices is a game changer, and it’s a policy that other manufacturers are now starting to copy (but not very well). Three generations of Android OS and one UI update are promised for every Galaxy flagship
