Last year’s Galaxy S20 lineup disappointed some fans, especially due to the price tags attached to the devices and the lack of 5G support. But unexpectedly, Samsung announced the new S21 range with similar prices to its 2020 devices.
Samsung has certainly stepped up its game when it comes to the design of its Galaxy S21 series, including the S21 Ultra 5G.
Samsung Is Buying A Whole Hulu Series, Called Exposure, That’s Sponcon For The Galaxy S21 Ultra 5g
While some people may not use the unique camera body, we preferred it over the silent design of the previous series. The contrast is done in a way that complements the overall design of the device and sets it apart from the other unrecognizable rectangles that are increasingly seen in the industry.
The Silver Phantom color on our review unit was also a nice feature. While not opting for the flashy palettes of many of Samsung’s latest devices, the color option offers a bit of sophistication thanks to the pearlescent and glossy finish.
It’s bigger than a regular smartphone, with a 6.8-inch display, but it’s not too bulky. For those accustomed to larger phablet-inspired devices, this is nothing new. Although it may take some getting used to for people using smaller devices.
The S21 Ultra camera delivers the same premium camera experience as the previous generation, while tweaking the specs slightly.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Review: Good Camera, Fast Processor, Great Price
Note that the S20 Ultra has three rear cameras with 108-megapixel, 48-megapixel and 12-megapixel lenses.
However, the S21 Ultra changes that with a quad-camera setup consisting of a 108-megapixel, 12-megapixel, and two 10-megapixel lenses.
At first, it seems like a reduction in the number of pixels, but it actually leads to an improvement in one important feature – scale. Thanks to the additional 10 MP telephoto lens, the S21 Ultra supports 10X optical zoom, which significantly improves the overall quality of zooming images.
While most people won’t find use for the 100X space zoom, the improved optical zoom is very useful every day, where the previous model only supported 4x optical zoom.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Review: Hit Or Miss?
If you’re into high-resolution photography, the 108-megapixel lens is still there to deliver the stunning shots you’ve come to know from a scope. Samsung’s AI and processor improvements really combine to deliver a better camera experience than the S21 Ultra’s predecessor.
The shortcomings of the S20 Ultra’s camera, such as lag or strange streaks in high-resolution images of closer objects, are not present in the S21 Ultra. High-definition images are among the best that can be achieved on a smartphone.
The main downside to the camera’s performance is that 8K video, limited to 24 frames per second, leaves a little to be desired. However, this feature seems more like a hint at the camera’s capabilities than a full-fledged feature. If you want to shoot 8K video at high frame rates, a smartphone is not the answer.
When it comes to regular video recording, the S21 Ultra does a great job. And the addition of the S21 Series Director’s View is a very useful feature that makes changing zoom levels and different viewpoints easy and seamless.
Samsung Galaxy S21 5g Review: Packed With Features And Value
However, be prepared for the area near the camera body to get hot when you put the camera through its paces. It’s not something that’s unstable or causes the camera to shut down, but it’s noticeable.
So how does battery life stack up to everyday use with all these powerful hardware built into the device?
When you put the phone through the PCMark Android battery test, it lasted up to 11 hours and 25 minutes. This puts it in similar territory to the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G, OnePlus 8T and Vivo X51 5G.
That’s impressive battery life for such a dedicated phone, especially since we set the display to its highest refresh rate. The battery test reflects continuous use, with the screen on everywhere.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5g (exynos)
One of the major game changers the S21 Ultra brings to the Galaxy S lineup is S Pen support. It’s the first non-Note device to support the plugin.
This opens up some flexibility for users who want to use the Samsung stylus without purchasing a Note device.
The S Pen comes separately – either as a stand-alone accessory or bundled with the S21 Ultra Clear View Cover. Although the most expensive option, the Clear View cover provides storage space for the accessory when not in use.
Because it’s not included with the device itself, using the S Pen with the S21 Ultra isn’t as seamless as with the Note device.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Review: A Top Phone That’s Been Replaced
One of our favorites is PenUp, an app that lets you draw and share digital artwork. While it’s sure to be a hit with casual artists, it’s also great for complete amateurs—it lets you learn to draw from a variety of community-curated tutorials. You can also use tracing and other tools to create works of art from your photos.
Other highlights of the PIN include general productivity features like creating handwritten notes, sending live GIF messages, and using Bixby’s translation features.
We’ve praised the S21 Ultra 5G so far – what are its downsides?
We mentioned heating problems when recording video. While this is by no means a key, it is still something that is noticeable to the user and should be considered.

At the same time, 8K video seems more like a proof-of-concept feature than a selling point – so we wouldn’t advise anyone to make a purchase decision.
The absence of a charger, while aimed at reducing electronic waste, seems to have been implemented a generation ago. Most people only upgrade every couple of years – and the S10 doesn’t support the maximum charging speed, or the charging cable for the S21 Ultra.
The S21 Ultra 5G is only R1 000 more expensive than its predecessor – the S20 Ultra will be available at R26 999 and the S21 Ultra 5G will be available at R27 999.
In many ways, the Galaxy S21 Ultra makes up for the disappointments of the S20 range. Commanding a price in the same region as last year’s range, coupled with design innovations, the phone makes for a more attractive deal for many.
