The Samsung Galaxy A12 is an affordable smartphone, with everything from battery life to an imaginative and attractive design, but all these good things come with a lot of problems as the day-to-day performance is very sluggish.

On paper, this sounds attractive enough, but how does it stack up in practice? The Motorola Moto G8 sets this price point, and unfortunately, the Galaxy A12 is less than the sum of its parts.
Of course, it’s a matter of personal preference, but in our estimation, the Samsung Galaxy A12 is one of the best plastic phones you can buy.
A matte finish runs down the sides of the arms, and a diagonal pattern on the low back covers the upper back. The smooth underside doesn’t detract from the look and creates a nice two-tone look.
The four rear cameras are housed in a square module, which is less visible than similar configurations on other phones, but the hardware protrudes enough to prevent the phone from lying completely flat on a table.

The inclusion of a headphone jack and microSD card slot is nice, and there’s a mono speaker that lands on the bottom edge.

In real life, an hour of Netflix streaming drained 7% of its battery; half an hour of intense play (Asphalt 8) ate 6%; and 2% who received half an hour of light play (Three). An hour of online streaming used up 2% of the A12’s battery, and music barely dropped, while an hour of downloaded music drained the Galaxy A12’s battery by just 1%.

However, the Galaxy A12’s payback isn’t that great. Using the charger provided in the box, it took 1 hour 35 minutes to charge the phone from 0% to 50% and 3 hours 25 minutes to fully charge.
A good-looking phone with a cheap, long-lasting battery: Even at this end of the market, Samsung makes beautiful phones, which helps with durability.
It’s hard to criticize a £169 smartphone that looks this good and lasts this long between charges, but the poor performance of the Galaxy A12 has poisoned the well. It’s so slow that it’s hard to recommend it to anyone.
The good news is that all kinds of solid machines can be bought at a price without compromising the user experience. The Motorola Moto G8 costs £179 and does everything the Galaxy A12 does well, but without any lag.
