The Galaxy S22 Ultra should be three months away, as Samsung will launch the series in January 2022. The phone will replace the Galaxy S21 Ultra, which, as of this writing, is one of the best smartphones ever made. But will the Galaxy S22 Ultra make the Galaxy S21 Ultra obsolete a few months from now? And more importantly, is the S21 model worth buying now, knowing that a sequel is right around the corner? Or should you wait until the Galaxy S22 Ultra arrives?

Well, to start with the obvious: No, the Galaxy S21 Ultra will not be made obsolete by the new flagship. It won’t be made redundant, but as is the case with annual updates, the Galaxy S22 Ultra should have at least a few significant advantages over its predecessor.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Review: Hit Or Miss?

The Galaxy S21 Ultra has been tried and tested, and is Samsung’s best smartphone to date, aside from the likes of the Galaxy Note series. It has a good camera with a large optical zoom, and has enough power to handle any task without a problem – especially the 16GB model.

The exterior design of the 2021 flagship could also be more interesting considering the leaked versions of the Galaxy S22 Ultra so far. The current model has a camera housing design that works pretty well because of the form factor, but Samsung might change things up again next year, and not for the better.

Another reason is that the Galaxy S21 Ultra is cheaper now than it was at launch. And with the holiday shopping season right around the corner, consumers will be able to find all kinds of deals and discounts for the Galaxy S21 Ultra, especially since Samsung and its partner retailers know another release is just around the corner. . Some stores will want to clear out their inventory, so potential buyers should have plenty of opportunities to pick up the Galaxy S21 Ultra this year for significantly less than the Galaxy S22 Ultra cost at launch.

Finally, if you’re not a fan of the S Pen at all, then you might prefer the Galaxy S21 Ultra over the sequel, as the 2021 flagship may ditch the last S Pen slot in the series.

One of the most obvious reasons is the S Pen – assuming you’re a fan. If you plan to use this popular device alongside your flagship phone, the Galaxy S22 Ultra should be the best choice.

Samsung already brought the S Pen to the Galaxy S21 Ultra earlier this year, but the phone doesn’t have an S Pen holster. Instead, the device needs to be stored inside an S Pen case that Samsung sells separately, and it has no Bluetooth feature.

In contrast, recent leaks suggest that the Galaxy S22 Ultra will fully adopt the S Pen and come with a special holster – one of the key features of the Galaxy Note device.

Moving on from the S Pen, there are the usual yearly updates to look forward to. If you buy the Galaxy S21 Ultra this year, you’ll miss out on the upcoming Exynos 2200 chipset, which should be more powerful than the current Exynos 2100 solution — in theory, at least. You can never be too sure about a chipset’s performance before it’s released, especially since the Exynos SoC is supported by AMD graphics. Early performance reports look promising, but AMD has little mobile game experience so only time will tell how Samsung’s new chipset performs. Also, the Exynos 2200 may not be available in all markets.

Finally, the new flagship will ship with the latest version of the OS, namely Android 12 UI 4.0 on top. Of course, the Galaxy S21 Ultra already has access to this firmware – in beta form – so it could run the upgraded build when the Galaxy S22 Ultra goes on sale. In this respect, you can say that the Galaxy S21 Ultra is a head start, especially if you don’t shy away from beta firmware development. However, the Galaxy S22 Ultra will ship with the latest version of the OS from day one, meaning it will last longer and get a newer version of the Android OS before it reaches end-of-life.

At the end of the day, at least in some areas, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is the flagship and the safest buy. It has a good camera system, a great display, and good performance, all in an elegant design. If you really need to buy a new flagship this year, you probably won’t regret getting the Galaxy S21 Ultra, especially if you can get it at a good discount before the end of 2021.

On the other hand, the Galaxy S22 Ultra could be the best phone to be able to use S Pen when it goes live early next year, and it will certainly offer better firmware support than its predecessor. Technically it should be fast too, and at the end of the day, we don’t understand what other unique features Samsung will have developed to separate its upcoming flagship from the rest of the pack.

If you were to buy a flagship in the next few months, would you choose the Galaxy S21 Ultra this year, or would you wait for the Galaxy S22 Ultra to arrive early next year? Feel free to leave a comment below.
