Samsung got me. On paper, the company’s Galaxy A51 has everything you could want in a $400 smartphone. Big, beautiful screen. Lots of cameras. 4,000mAh battery. Inspiration Inspiration, and a headphone jack. As an avid — some might say angry — fan of interesting midrange smartphones, I was ready for the A51 to take its place alongside lower-priced standouts like the Pixel 3a XL and iPhone SE. It never happened.

That’s not to say the Galaxy A51 is a bad phone. Samsung has a lot going for it here, and in a week of testing, I found it to be too sweet at times. Unfortunately, all the things the company did well were jacked up and couldn’t completely eliminate inconsistent performance: it’s a $400 device that sometimes feels like $250. I don’t think that’s enough to make the A51 a bad smartphone, but it does make it bad.

The Verizon Wireless model I was testing of the Galaxy A51 I had 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. (Disclaimer: Verizon is the parent company, but that has no bearing on what we say.) Sprint and AT&T offer this version of the A51, and no matter which carrier you choose, they’ll all sell you the phone directly. $399. It doesn’t sound too steep, but it’s worth noting that if you live outside the US, the phone will cost a bit more when purchased unlocked. If you’re serious about owning the A51, it’s important to look for a good deal: it’s not worth $400.
If there’s one thing Samsung deserves credit for, it’s that the A51 doesn’t look like a $400 phone. With a stunning trim frame; A spectacular, bright finish; With surprisingly small bezels, this midrange model can easily surpass a phone costing twice as much. This is it for me

Of course, since this phone costs a fraction of what a flagship does, Samsung needs to be careful with styling and materials. Consider Samsung’s choice of materials: Wrapping a phone in glass quickly raises its price tag, so the company used a material called “clastic” for the A51’s body. As the name suggests, this phone has a plastic frame that looks like glass if you look closely. The Galaxy A51 lacks an IP rating for water and dust resistance, which is common for phones in this price range. The rest of the design of the phone is standard. There’s a USB-C port that supports 15W fast charging and a nano SIM/microSD card tray on the right side of the phone, which you can use to add up to 128GB of storage. If you’re a music lover, you’ll appreciate the convenient headphone jack squeezed into the Samsung A51, as its single speaker is fantastic.
Helping elevate the A51’s design is its wide, 6.5-inch, full HD + Super AMOLED screen. It’s one of Samsung’s Infinity-O displays, and if you disagree with the marketing ps, there’s a small hole cut into the panel to accommodate the 32-megapixel front-facing camera. It’s surprisingly small and would be easy to notice if it weren’t for the shiny metal ring around it – it’s almost Samsung-like.
It should be watched regularly. Fortunately, the rest of the screen is Samsung: deep blacks, reds and great viewing angles for the price. Its high brightness sometimes feels a little anemic for outdoor use, but the display is perfect for watching YouTube videos when you’re at home.

The screen is often the most expensive part of a smartphone, and I’m glad Samsung went with the display it did here. It’s not easy on the eyes; It’s a nice contrast to devices like the iPhone SE, which rely on modern designs to keep costs down. Visually, the A51 is stunning, but as my parents always tell me, looks aren’t everything.
Here the problem starts when you pick up the phone. Below the display is the fingerprint sensor, which isn’t pretty. While it works, it takes a while to recognize my thumb. However, most of the time, the sensor does not work. Usually, you’ll see a small green circle around your finger indicating that the sensor is analyzing your print, but it’s not always visible. Repeated cleaning of the screen did not fix the problem and I was no longer able to register my fingerprints. For your sanity, you can set a PIN or pattern unlock.
Once I got it, the biggest problem became apparent very quickly – the A51 seemed to get stuck at times. Switching between apps, thumbing through app pages, and navigating to the home screen continues to feel great. You know, the things you do
To be clear, this doesn’t happen often, and I’m not complaining too much when the phone is firing on all cylinders. If you’re the kind of person who likes to watch videos and send some emails to family, you might not notice this delay for a while. But if you’re a fan of smooth, consistent performance, prepare for some disappointment — stuttering animations and app launch delays aren’t far behind, and it gets old pretty quickly.

It’s not entirely clear why the A51 does that, but part of the problem may lie with Samsung’s choice of chipset. Instead of using a Qualcomm Snapdragon, like most US-bound Android phones, the company ran with an in-house Exynos 9611. – Some CPU cores are faster and support a variety of rear cameras, but that’s about it. The fact that Samsung is going to splash out on a bigger screen and use a minor chip update announced two years ago tells you a lot about its priorities.
The funny thing is, this chipset is no slouch. It sits between the $250 Moto G Power (with Snapdragon 665 chipset) and the $470 Pixel 3 XL (with Snapdragon 670), which is about how much you’d expect these phones to cost. The A51’s specs are pretty good—nowhere near flagship-level, but in line with other US-bound devices we’ve seen in this price range. If so, this functionality seems to be incompatible due to a software bug that may be fixed in a future update. (To be fair, Samsung won’t confirm whether any updates are in the works.)
In fairness to Samsung, those considering a $400 smartphone probably know not to expect class-leading performance. The big issue here is that there’s still a lot of money to drop on a smartphone, and the A51’s balance of performance and price isn’t quite right.
The Moto G Power—a phone with an older chipset that costs $150 less—can run a little more smoothly. And the Pixel 3a XL? Forget it. The difference in smoothness and overall quality of experience between these devices turns in the Pixel’s favor. It’s worth noting that all three phones have 4GB of RAM, so it’s not like Motorola or Google are packing too much hardware here. If you’re not married to Android, there’s always the iPhone SE. It’s aiming for Samsung’s heartland with a $400 arrow and running alongside Apple’s pricier smartphones. Whether due to software glitches, poor memory management or something else, this questionable performance makes it hard to recommend the A51 for the price.

I was hoping the epic battery life would sweeten the deal here, but it doesn’t. Despite packing an impressive 4,000mAh (with a mediocre chipset and a screen that only runs at 1080p), the Galaxy A51 is good for a full day of use. It’s not bad by any means, but when other mid-range phones – like the Moto G Power – measure battery life in days instead of hours, the A51 can’t help but feel a little disappointing.
