Update Samsung M31 Grey Colour Review – If you are spending around Rs 15,000 on a phone, are you seriously considering getting a phone other than Redmi Note or an equivalent Realme or Nokia device? Not too long ago, Samsung was the default option here. It’s not that Samsung still doesn’t make great phones, it’s just that its budget phones haven’t been all that exciting in the past few years. At least not compared to the competition.
Has anything changed with the Galaxy M31? To answer this very important question (for Samsung, if not for anyone else), read on.

Samsung’s use of glass on the back of the phone – plastic that looks and feels like glass – is smart because it gives the phone a premium feel while keeping the weight low. Weight can be an issue considering Samsung has crammed a massive 6,000mAh battery into this thing.

Don’t let the “glass” in “glasstic” fool you, it’s still plastic, easily scratched, and glossy, making the phone slippery, especially for people with bad fingers like me. On the other hand, the phone does not look cheap, unlike its predecessor.
The color option I use is Space Black, which is honestly a bit dull for my taste. No gradients, everything is simple. If you don’t want black, your only option is navy blue.
At 191 grams, the phone is still a bit on the heavy side despite the glass, but if you want a 6,000mAh battery, you’ll have to live with it.
A word of advice: buy a case because you need one and Samsung won’t give you one.

The Galaxy M31 features a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Infinity display with a waterdrop notch at the top. The bezels and chin of the phone are thin, with curved edges, something we’ve never seen before.
The quad-camera setup housed in a rectangular camera module isn’t unique either, as Samsung has made it a signature design element of its 2020 lineup. You can see this in the Galaxy S20 and S20 Plus, as well as the recently launched Galaxy Lite model phones.
You’ll see a fingerprint sensor on the back, as well as a headphone jack, a Type-C port, and a speaker grille along the bottom edge.
Starting with the 32MP front camera, the phone takes really good pictures. In terms of details and colors, the phone met my expectations. It doesn’t oversaturate colors like many phones do these days. It took the phone a few seconds to adjust focus when I used portrait mode, or what Samsung calls “live focus,” but it’s well worth your time as it performed well for edge detection, sharpness, and color.

Moving on to the rear cameras, which include a 64MP main sensor, an 8MP wide-angle camera, a 5MP depth camera, and a 5MP macro camera, images taken in broad daylight are very impressive. However, in some cases the color seems to wash out. Detail and clarity are top notch.
The ultra wide-angle lens is also good. In some cases, it seemed to me that the captured image was much warmer than the actual scene, but at least the image was not ugly or unrealistic.
I had high hopes for this camera as it takes fantastic photos during the day but fails miserably at night. If you use the camera at night or even in low light, you will only get blurry images. Due to the lack of clarity and too much noise, I had to struggle to get a shot that didn’t look like I was running when I shot it. If you thought night mode could help, you were wrong. This does nothing but make the image brighter. In my opinion, this is a wake-up call if you shoot a lot in low light.
The smartphone is powered by the Exynos 9611 chipset, the same as its predecessor and the Galaxy A51. The smartphone runs the latest version of Android 10 and offers 6GB of RAM and up to 128GB of internal storage.

You have an app drawer and switching between apps is seamless. I did not notice any delays when using the phone. I’ve played several videos, games and music and haven’t noticed any lag or overheating. Obviously, this phone is perfect for your daily work.
Games are another matter. I was playing RoadRash on my phone and it wasn’t smooth. I wish Samsung used a more powerful processor like the Snapdragon 730G chipset, for example the Poco X2 costs £15,999. Realme 6 and Redmi Note 9 Pro also come with more powerful hardware at this price point.
The battery is an attractive feature of the phone – 6000 mAh is fantastic. I used the phone for a day and a half, and then it was not completely discharged. One small (well, not-so-minor) trade-off you have to make has to do with charging time. A 15W charger must be used. If you’re going to be away for a while, it’s best to go into zen mode while you wait for your phone to fully charge. On the other hand, after charging, you can work for a long time without worrying about battery life.
However, the display and single speaker are very good and I think this phone will be a good choice for those who just watch a lot of videos. In fact, very few phones offer OLED displays at this price, and if that’s important to you, the M31 is the one for you. Combined with a large capacity battery, watching Netflix all day long will become your favorite pastime.

There are several reasons to buy this phone, but to be honest, they are all good. The OLED display is just as good as the battery life. The performance is more than enough for everyday tasks, and if you don’t plan on playing too much, you really have no reason not to pick up this phone other than the camera performance.
However, the reasons not to buy this phone are equally valid. Phones like Realme 6 Pro and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max are more powerful, more interesting and offer better cameras. These phones also charge faster.
Back to my original question: does the Galaxy M31 change anything for Samsung? I do not think so.
