After introducing low-light LEDs on its Editors’ Choice-winning 6-Series Google TVs from 2021, TCL is bringing the technology to its 6-Series 4K Roku TV lineup. This lighting system helps the 65-inch model we reviewed ($999.99) earn excellent test scores and is more powerful than its predecessor. The TV also works well for gaming thanks to its low input and AMD FreeSync Pro support. That said, it doesn’t quite match the color accuracy or brightness of its bigger sibling, such as the Hisense U8H ($1,399.99 for the 65-inch), our current overall Editors’ Choice winner. These minor flaws aside, the 6 Series is still the best combo you can get with a built-in Roku.
Editors note: This review is based on tests performed on the 65-inch 65R655. Aside from the difference in screen size, the $1,499.99 75-inch 75R655 has the same specs and is expected to perform similarly.
Compared to most modern TVs, the TCL R655 looks sleek and simple. A narrow metal band frames the screen, but only marks the bottom of the gun’s thin bezel. The bottom bezel features the TCL logo in the middle, with a trapezoidal protrusion below that houses the infrared sensor. It’s not the thinnest TV at just 2.7 inches deep, but the curved plastic casing on the back makes sure you look at it from the front when you can’t see the bulge.

The power cord connects to the right, all other connections are on the right. It includes four HDMI ports (two 144Hz, one eARC), one USB port, one Ethernet port, a 3.5mm composite video input, a 3.5mm headphone jack, an optical audio output, and an antenna/cable connection.
Inside the box is a Roku TV remote. It’s a short black stick with rounded corners and Roku’s signature large, purple navigation pad. Home, back and power buttons sit on top of the tablet, along with a pinhole microphone. Playback controls and dedicated service buttons for Apple TV, Disney+, Hulu, and Netflix are located below the panel. On the right side is the volume rocker and the mute button. The remote doesn’t have a microphone for personal listening or a center microphone for handheld TV control, but you can replace that with the Roku Voice Remote Pro if you need those features.
The R655 uses the same Roku TV Smart TV interface as its predecessor. A simple and convenient platform that provides access to many major video streaming services including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, and YouTube, although it lacks Twitch. Roku TV supports Apple AirPlay, which means you can stream directly to your screen from an iPhone, iPad or Mac.

You can search for something to watch remotely by pressing the microphone button and speaking into the pinhole microphone. Voice commands also work to open apps and control the TV. The voice search feature is fast and useful, but it doesn’t have the same general functionality as a full voice assistant like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. In other words, it can’t control smart home devices, check your schedule, or provide weather forecasts.
The TCL 65R655 is a 4K TV with a 120Hz refresh rate. High Dynamic Range (HDR) is supported in Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG). No ATSC 3.0 tuner.
We test the TVs with a Klein K-80 colorimeter (opens in a new window), a Murideo SIX-G signal generator (opens in a new window) and Kalman Image Display software (opens in a new window). Like the TCL 6-Series 4K Google TV before it, the new 6-Series Roku TV uses a low-light system that provides better contrast performance for HDR content than the previous 6-Series Roku TV (which is about a year is old.Google TV model).
Note that the 65R655’s full-screen brightness is lower than the 6 Series Google TV (923 nits) and the U8H (842 nits), though it’s still good. Interestingly, in our tests, HDR Bright and HDR Dark modes showed brightness above 600 nits for full-screen white area and 1,480 nits for 18% white area, but we recommend HDR Normal mode in between. . Third, the color vision performance is excellent.

The new 6-series showed a slightly sharper picture with an SDR signal in movie mode than the other models in our tests, with 310-nit full-screen brightness and 755-nit brightness at 18% height and area. This is still a good performance for an SDR signal, as most TVs are less bright than HDR signals.
The charts above show the color performance of the 6 Series as dots and the color levels as squares. The SDR signal in film mode is compared to Rec.709 broadcast standards and the HDR signal in HDR normal mode is compared to DCI-P3 digital film standards with the color temperature set to warm. In both cases, whites are less warm than good, while cyan and magenta appear green and red. Primary colors are perfect. The green color of the TV and the HDR signal will fade, but not significantly. Both the TCL 6-Series Google TV and Hisense U8H are slightly brighter, but not as bright as the 65R655. Of the three, the 6 Series Google TV has the most accurate whites, while the U8H has the best and most balanced primary color.
A normal HDR setting with color temperature set to warm is your best bet for most content; Even with the same color temperature settings, HDR Dark and HDR Bright appear dark and bright.
