Update A50s 6 128 White Review

Update A50s 6 128 White Review – This year started with a flurry of affordable Samsung Galaxy M-series and A-series phones as part of the company’s strategy to fight the likes of Xiaomi, Realme and others. Samsung is targeting all strategic pricing at Rs. 8000 and Rs. 20,000 were sold in a very short time, sometimes in multiple versions, due to the large number of models and variants. It’s been a while since the release date and Samsung’s competitors have all updated their boards, so it was necessary to see some updated models from the Korean giant.

The price of the new Samsung Galaxy A50s starts at Rs. 22,999, which is a slight increase in price compared to the Galaxy A50 (Review). The Redmi K20 (Review) joins the party soon after launch, and other high-end phones have seen price cuts that place them in this segment. Which of these phones should you go for with a budget of around Rs. 25000? We review the Samsung Galaxy A50s to find out.

There is nothing new about the appearance of the Samsung Galaxy A50s. When we reviewed the Galaxy M20 ( Review ), one of Samsung’s first aggressive pushes, we commented on how generic it was and how it broke from the company’s previous designs. Similarly, the Galaxy A50s can easily be confused with any smartphone from today’s leading brands, from any angle.

Samsung Galaxy A50 Review: An Appreciable Effort That Needs Some Polishing

The front of this phone is almost all screen, with a small cutout for the camera at the top (Samsung calls this design “Infinity-U”). The edges of the screen are rounded and there is a rather thick chin, while the sides and top edges are much narrower. The edges are very slightly curved, and we’re excited to note that this is one of the few phones we’ve reviewed recently that doesn’t reach the already attached plastic screen protector, which we don’t mind and appreciate.

On the back, we have the only touch of personality that Samsung has decided to show, the geometric pattern in the center of the intersecting lines, with different shades of color in each area. There are three variants: Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush White and Prism Crush Violet. our review unit is the black version, but the back colors are different shades of gray.

Thankfully, this design isn’t as prone to smudges and fingerprints as the Galaxy A50’s mirror-like finish, but it still needs to be cleaned a few times a day to keep it looking its best. There’s still a slight prismatic effect under some types of lighting, though it’s much more subtle than the psychedelic reflections we saw on this phone’s predecessor.

At the bottom is a USB Type-C port, along with a 3.5mm audio jack and a single speaker. The tray on the left has a slot for two Nano-SIMs and a microSD card. The power and volume buttons are on the right and the top is empty.

Weighing 166g and only 7.7mm thick, the Galaxy A50s is very easy to handle and live with. You may have to stretch a bit to reach the top of the 6.4-inch display, but otherwise we had no complaints. The build quality is also quite good, although this phone is still plastic and not quite as premium. It is not even mentioned what glass was used for the screen.

We didn’t see any scratches or dents on the frame or back panel during the review period, but we would use this phone with a plastic case. Fortunately, one comes in a retail box. Samsung also includes a 10W charger, a USB Type-C cable, a 3.5mm wired headset, a SIM eject tool, and a quick start guide.

The first thing you’ll notice about this phone when you turn it on is the bright Super AMOLED display. It’s 6.4 inches wide, but that’s about 6.2 inches if you measure using the rounded edges. The resolution is full-HD+ 1080×2340. At the top is a notch for the front-facing camera and a conveniently located fingerprint sensor.

Samsung used its octa-core Exynos 9611 processor, which appears to be a slight upgrade from the Exynos 9610 found in the Galaxy A50. You get four ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.74GHz and four Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.3GHz, as well as Mali-G72 graphics. This chip has the same CPU, GPU and LTE capabilities as its predecessor, but supports higher camera resolutions.

Which brings us to the big new feature of this phone: its 48-megapixel f/2 primary rear camera. It has an 8-megapixel f/2.2 wide-angle camera and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The front camera has also been upgraded with a 32-megapixel resolution and f/2 aperture.

There are two variants of this phone, but both have 128GB of storage. The only difference is that you get 4GB for Rs. 22, 999 or 6GB RAM for Rs. 24, 999. This is similar to what Samsung is offering on the Galaxy A50, and we think it makes no sense to have two variants that are so similar. You’re unlikely to notice much of a difference unless you’re running very heavy apps and games.

The battery is quite large at 4000 mAh, and 15W fast charging is possible if you get a 10W charger in the box. Dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5, GPS, NFC and FM radio are available.

Our unit came with Samsung’s One UI software version 1.5 running on top of Android 9 with the August 2019 security update. One UI is primarily designed for large-screen phones, and while it looks nice and modern, we’re not fans of big icons and wide spaces everywhere. Fortunately, you can adjust the size and density of the home screens and app drawer through the settings.

There’s a lot of white space in the menus, and the large screen doesn’t seem to be used properly, especially in the notification shade and the Settings app, where a lot of scrolling is required. That said, the ability to remove menus and controls so that even the top bars are in contact is very welcome. Many features are available, including Secure Folder, Samsung Pay, Kid’s Space, Night Mode, floating apps, and cloning of Dual Messenger apps with independent contact lists.

Pressing and holding the right power button invokes the Bixby voice assistant. To turn the phone off, there’s a small on-screen power button in the quick switch area that you slide down from the top of the screen. To the left of the first home screen is also the Bixby home screen, with some useful panels like sports scores and notifications, but also a lot of ad content.

Bixby Routines allow you to connect multiple commands with simple “if…then” conditions. For example, you can tell the Galaxy A50s to change Wi-Fi and Bluetooth status, sound profile, screen customizations, lock screen shortcuts, and accessibility settings, and perform specific actions, such as opening a website or sending an SMS. All of these things can be triggered at the same time when you leave or enter a location, connect an accessory, open a specific app, receive a phone call, and/or pair with a specific Bluetooth device.

The Super AMOLED panel allows for ambient display, though by default the phone only requires a single tap while the phone is in standby mode to view the time and status icons. You can set it to be visible all the time or only between specified times.

You also have a lot of control over what’s visible on the lock screen, as well as a choice of animated wallpapers or image collections to keep going. Lock screen stories are pieces of content, some of which are ads, that will appear every time you wake your phone from sleep. This can be disabled during the initial Android installation process.

Samsung has also decided to implement its Edge Panels feature, which we’ve previously only seen on high-end phones with curved glass sides. This thin, visible tab can be placed on either side of the screen, and you can swipe in to reveal one or more vertical strips containing shortcuts to contacts or apps, or thumbnail widgets or content streams. More edge panels can be downloaded from Samsung’s Galaxy Store.

There are only a few preloaded apps: Facebook, Netflix, OneDrive, and Samsung’s Galaxy Store and Game Launcher. When we were setting up this phone, we were told that if apps aren’t used for three days or more, the apps will “sleep,” meaning they won’t update content and may not receive certain notifications. This can be turned off in the battery settings, but be aware that the default setting is unusual and may cause unexpected notification delays.

We were curious to see what Samsung changed with the Galaxy A50s compared to the Galaxy A50.
