These phones carry the same DNA as their flagship counterparts, but with internal improvements and look relevant for the second half of 2019. Holding the Galaxy A50 will instantly remind you of the Galaxy A50. It delivers the same smooth, thin and light body we loved about the original product. The Galaxy A50s is 7.7mm thick and weighs just 166 grams, making the smartphone light and easy to hold. The slim design combined with the curved back panel gives a good feeling in the hand.
The curved back is made of plastic, which is a bit disappointing for a phone under Rs 20,000. That said, the plastic body makes the phone light and comfortable to hold, so it’s a good deal. .
The biggest visual change comes in the panel itself, which gets a checkered pattern with a back panel that offers different shades of the same color. The Galaxy A50s comes in Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush White and Prism Crush Violet colors. The color of the curl will definitely vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. The Galaxy A50s is a tall phone, but it’s easy to operate with one hand. The Exynos 9611 is based on the 10nm FinFET process and is equipped with the same Mali-G72 MP3 GPU as its predecessor.

Out of the box, the Galaxy A50s is as comfortable as you’d expect. Apps open and load quickly, and I haven’t experienced any crashes while using them. The 6GB RAM model we got for review can easily switch between apps, though you may stumble.
The Galaxy A50s performs well with everyday use, such as browsing the web or social media apps, messaging and video streaming. However, it won’t feel very fluid or smooth, as there is some noise when scrolling through apps. It will run games like PUBG on average graphics, but anything above that will cause frame drops and stuttering. The 10nm chipset is very efficient and helps reduce battery drain during gaming.
Overall, the Galaxy A50s offers good performance in the mid-range, but expect a lot more from phones under Rs 20,000 these days. The speed doesn’t come close to what the Redmi K20 offers in this department. It even feels slower than the Realme XT, priced at Rs 16,000. If you don’t mind it too much, the Galaxy A50s should be fine, but you have to restrain yourself.
The Galaxy A50s ships with Android Pie based on One UI. It is not known when the phone will be updated to Android 10, but Samsung has done just that by upgrading its portfolio to the new version of Android. As you will now know, the same UI offers an extensive dark mode, which the AMOLED display on the Galaxy A50s can really take advantage of.

One UI also comes with a cleaner and sleeker new layout that lets you do most things with one hand. Apart from a few Samsung apps, Microsoft office apps and third-party apps like Helo, DailyHunt and Snapchat, you won’t find much software on the Galaxy A50s.
The Galaxy A50s comes with a fingerprint sensor. All the biometric options are reasonable compared to those offered by brands like Oppo, Realme and Vivo. The fingerprint sensor, for example, is sluggish and gestures aren’t entirely smooth. The low-end speaker can be loud, but the high-end isn’t very clear. Samsung has tripled the camera setup on the Galaxy A50s. While the A50 offers a 25-megapixel primary camera, the Galaxy A50s gets a 48-megapixel sensor, which puts it in line with the competition. The other two cameras in the kit include an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The selfie camera has also been bumped up from 25MP to a 32MP sensor.
The Galaxy A50s camera is definitely capable of taking on phones like the Redmi K20 and Realme XT. Their great camera can take really good photos in sunlight, which is not surprising. If there’s enough light around you, the Galaxy A50s will take stunning photos.

But in low light the phone starts to struggle. The special night mode does not reach the computational photography that Oppo and Xiaomi can offer. Images will look grainy despite noise reduction and the overall image will look soft rather than sharp and detailed.
You can easily swap the main camera and wide-angle lens to add more space to the frame. The wide angle is useful in tight spaces or if you’re looking for a new perspective. Note that the quality is very high when switching to the 8MP wide-angle lens. Compared to a high-resolution camera, wide-angle photos will lack detail and sharpness. Also, there is a big change in color tone and the image will be darker compared to the main camera.
The Galaxy A50s can capture sharp and clear video in 1080p and 4K. It can record 4K video at 30fps, which is great, but feels shaky compared to 1080p footage. The camera gets a bit of EIS (electrical stabilization) when recording at 1080p, which is good if you’re recording handheld while traveling.

Samsung didn’t feel the need to upgrade the battery on the Galaxy A50s. It shares the same 4000mAh battery as the original A50, which is great. The Galaxy A50s will last you a full day on a single charge, but don’t expect the phone to go beyond that. I found the battery life to be consistent no matter what I did during the day. Expected battery drain is minimal, and you can always use the display without worrying about battery drain.
