Vizio’s E1i-A3 series is the poster child for “TVs are getting bigger and cheaper all the time.” The 70-inch behemoth reviewed here costs less than any TV of the same size I know, but it packs a lot for the price. Beyond the image, it is wrapped in Smart TV, with a stylish QWERTY remote control, as well as sharp styling that does what it can to keep a screen of this size “underlined”.
The Vizio E701i-A3 is a great value as the most expensive LED TV of its size to offer Smart TV. The image has very accurate colors and very good performance in bright rooms. Tons of Smart TV content is available in a responsive interface, and the QWERTY remote control makes searching and other Smart TV operations easy. With a thin frame, the set looks more compact and slimmer than many of its competitors.
The E1i-A3’s picture can’t match the black-level performance of some competing LED TVs, and it has some smoothness issues. The smart TV interface design looks outdated and clumsy.

The 70-inch Vizio E701i-A3 costs twice as much as its 60-inch sibling, and if you’re spending two grand on a TV, the options are worth considering. Sharp’s LC-70LE640U is a better performer, Panasonic’s 65-inch TC-P65ST50 is better in almost every way, and both can be had for a few hundred more than this Vizio. But if you’re okay with that and want a really good big LED TV, the Vizio E701i-A3 is an impressive value.
The E1-A3 series, whether 60 or 70 inches, is the finest Vizio TV I can remember. The 70-inch frame is very thin, although it’s slightly thicker on the sides than the 60 – about an inch. It is smaller than the one at the top and slightly thicker at the bottom. The 70-inch Vizio’s frame is the same size as the 60-inch Sharp’s LC-60LE640U.
The result is a huge TV that looks almost full-screen when viewed from the front, and while the 70-inch profile is about 60 inches thicker, it’s still pretty slim. These frame and cabinet dimensions, combined with Vizio’s understated glossy black styling, put Vizio’s E701i-A3 on par with TVs from some of the most popular brands. As usual at this price point, the panel on top of the column does not rotate.
To make it easy to enter searches and other information into Smart TV apps, the E701i-A3 remote control comes with a full QWERTY keyboard. While it doesn’t meet the standards of a good smartphone keyboard, it’s roomy and suitable for occasional use – easily beating the cumbersome on-screen virtual keyboards required by most other smart TVs. I liked the tactile “click” when pressing the keys, although I was constantly annoyed by having to tilt the remote forward to enter numbers.

It’s also worth noting that since the remote uses infrared to signal the TV, you have to keep the front edge roughly pointed at the screen, which looks unnatural. If you hold the keyboard more perpendicular to your face, as I show in the image below, chances are you won’t register as many keystrokes. That’s why Bluetooth or other wireless technology is superior to infrared for living room keyboards.
The distant face is not a favorite. The menu/exit/guide/back keys are too small and there is not enough space between the keys. The best feature of the remote is that it has dedicated keys for Amazon Instant and Netflix; Unfortunately, Vizio replaced the Vudu app hotkey on previous clicks with M-Go (see below). The worst part, shared by the QWERTY side, is the lack of lighting.
Vizio uses the same menus on this set as its other smart TVs, and I’m a fan. The menu system looks like an app, and I liked that the image settings were integrated into the app’s main taskbar (see below). The answers were quick, the explanations were complete and I had no problems finding my way. I also appreciated the easy guided setup process and the unusually comprehensive on-screen manual.
The E701i-A3 hits the sweet spot for LED LCD TVs. The edge-lit LED backlight avoids the local dimming found on models like Vizio’s M3D0KD, but the company includes 120Hz processing. Off the charts is 3D, although that’s not a huge loss in my book, especially on a TV with a competitive price tag. If you want a 3D Vizio, your best viewing option so far is the 65-inch M3D651SV, with Sharp’s 70-inch LC-70LE745U the closest 3D competitor.

Smart TV: Compared to the smart TV implementations of most major TV manufacturers, Vizio’s VIA Smart TV suite of apps, which looks exactly like its first generation, looks outdated. The design makes it harder than it should be to find the app you want, as you have to scroll through the little ticker at the bottom of the page. Yes, you can rearrange the ticker and remove unwanted apps, but it’s still a pain for those who want to keep more than a few apps installed. Response times were decent, but not as fast as Samsung’s or LG’s app suites. That said, I prefer Vizio’s design to Sharp’s.
On the other hand, the selection of content is among the best available today, and comes close to matching Roku’s, which trades HBO Go for YouTube. Vizio doesn’t leave any major video services off the list, though it doesn’t yet have sports apps like MLB.TV and the NHL. There are also plenty of music options with Rhapsody, Pandora, TuneIn Radio and iHeartRadio. There’s no browser, but that’s not a huge loss since TV-based browsers are inferior to smartphones, tablets and, of course, PC browsers.
Vizio told me the Skype app isn’t yet active on the 60- and 70-inch versions of this TV, and didn’t say when it would be: “We’re actively working with Skype to get these models certified.” When it finally turns on, you’ll still need to buy a $70 camera/speaker.
Vizio does not have an “app store” and a selection of paid apps, but the Yahoo Connected TV Store (the VIA engine is based on Yahoo Widgets) has many free and useful options such as AOL HD, eBay, Fandango (with ticket purchase), iHeartRadio, SnagFilms, Vimeo, Wealth TV 3D and WSJ Live. The remaining 150+ apps are inevitably less useful, including dozens of apps dedicated to local news channels.

Picture settings: The E701i-A3 has Vizio’s trademark sports names (football, golf, baseball and basketball) that do little to improve picture quality when watching sports. Advanced settings include two-point color temperature and a couple of dejudder settings, along with the ability to adjust the ambient light sensor and global backlight dimming.
There’s no color management system, gamma presets or multiple grayscale controls involved, so the set isn’t as photographer-friendly as sets from LG and Samsung. It is as adjustable as Sharp’s set, and more so than Panasonic’s.
Connectivity: The back is solid for the E701i-A3, with four HDMI ports, a component video port (shared with a single composite video port), a PC input and two USB ports.
Vizio told us the 70-inch size improved the image quality of its 60-inch sibling, but to our eyes and testing, they’re basically the same. Both can produce a working picture that’s as good as what you see on many LED TVs that cost a lot more. Neither can match the level of picture quality seen in Sharp’s main LED competitor, let alone Panasonic’s excellent plasmas such as the 65-inch ST50. The Vizio’s black levels were rather unconvincing and showed some issues with uniformity and off-angle viewing. On the other hand, it still warrants a “good” score in this category, mainly due to its accurate color and strong performance in bright rooms.
