I’ve been using the Redmi Note 12 5G for almost a week now, and here are my thoughts on the new mid-range phone.

This matte green model is exclusive to the classic Redmi Note 12 series. It looks beautiful in sunlight. However, it is a fingerprint magnet. I just suggest you use the transparent phone case that the company provides in the box.

It is soft and also with a transparent design, the case manages to maintain the visual appeal of the phone and, most importantly, protect it from cracks when dropped.
On the front, the company has used Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 shield and also applied a second layer of plastic-based screen protector that provides a double layer of protection against daily wear and tear that usually occurs when it is kept in the pocket with keys and coins.
It should be noted that the Redmi Note 12 also comes with an IP53 water splash rating, making it one of the most durable phones among competing brands in the market.
Another aspect I like about the Redmi Note 12 is that the company has managed to keep the 3.5mm audio jack. It’s the best way to listen to music compared to wireless headphones (and need to charge regularly). Besides, the speakers on the phone are also good.

It also has two types of SIM slots (nano SIM-1 + nano SIM-2/microSD card) on the left side and on the right side you will find the power button along with the fingerprint sensor and the volume keys.
Of course, it has an infrared sensor on top, which is useful for controlling compatible smart gadgets like ACs and TVs.
As for the display, it sports a 6.67-inch full HD+ (1080×2400p) Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. I had a lot of fun watching YouTube vlogs on the Redmi Note 12. It has one of the brightest displays compared to any mid-range phone.
It supports a maximum brightness of 1,200 nits and it’s just great for watching videos, even outside in the shade. And with a 120Hz refresh rate, I’ve had a blast reading news and browsing social media on the phone.

Also, the fingerprint sensor on the side works as advertised. It is fast in terms of response time and unlocks the screen.
In addition to matte green, Xiaomi also offers the Redmi Note 12 5G in two other colors: matte black and mysterious blue. They are also said to be excellent.
It is powered by a 6nm class Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 Kryo-based octa-core (2.0GHz Cortex A78 x 2 + 1.8GHz x Cortex A55 x 6) processor supported by Adreno 619 GPU.
Redmi Note 12 is India’s first smartphone with Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 silicon from Qualcomm. It promises to deliver up to 15 percent improved CPU and up to 10 percent improved GPU compared to the previous generation.

Our test model is the top model with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The device worked smoothly for all daily activities like browsing the internet, sending emails and making calls and switching between multiple apps. Also, the thermal performance is very good, while playing graphical games and even controlling the camera for video recording.
Although it runs MIUI 13 based on Android 12, it is very easy to navigate through the phone’s settings. Yes, the software is over a year old, but you won’t miss much from Android 13. The latter is just a refinement, not a huge upgrade over the 12 series. Users should try playing around with background themes to brighten up their home and lock screens.

The company has confirmed to offer at least two years of Android OS updates (Android 13 and 14) and four years of security software support.

Redmi Note 12 5G comes with a triple camera unit: 48 MP primary camera (f/1.8) + 8 MP ultra-wide camera with f/2.2 aperture, 2 MP macro camera with f/2.4 aperture with LED flash at the back.
As you can see from the sample photos, it takes brilliant photos in natural sunlight. The colors of the footage are vibrant, good for sharing on social media.
Even the macro shots have come out great and I have to say they are some of the best I’ve seen on a mid-range phone.
As for portrait mode, it does a great job. I managed to get a nice photo of my in-laws. The hair, eyes and bangs have come out so great and I’m really impressed.

At night and in the evening, however, the images seem to collect noise. It should be noted that I noticed a grainy background when viewing the images on the computer screen but not so much when viewing them on the phone’s compact screen.
On the front is 13MP (f/2.0). Like the main rear camera, the selfie camera does great things with portraits. It manages to clearly capture the contours around the head and create a perfect depth of field effect between foreground and background.

It stutters a bit in low light. But that said, the picture quality is on par with most phones in the sub-Rs 20,000 price bracket.
If you have a few thousand dollars extra to spend, go for the Redmi Note 12 Pro or 12 Pro Plus series. The latter two come with better camera hardware.
