We know it’s confusing, and we don’t blame you. The Redmi Note 10 lineup is once again confusing when it comes to naming. Luckily for you, we have the better Redmi Note 10 because the 5G model sacrifices a lot of good features to support 5G. Instead, the standard Redmi Note 10 focuses on the essentials, and while it’s undoubtedly good value for most users, 5G still isn’t a big deal in most countries.

The main attractions of the non-5G version of the Redmi Note 10 include a Super AMOLED screen with high peak brightness, a capable camera setup, a large and fast-charging battery and stereo speakers. Redmi Note 10 5G, on the other hand, will receive an IPS panel, lose fast charging technology and stereo speakers.
And while the Redmi Note 10 skips some of the premium features of the Redmi Note 10 Pro, such as the Gorilla Glass 5 build, 120Hz OLED panel and improved 108MP primary camera, it has its own reasons for being. It’s still very cheap (a good price split on Xiaomi’s part), and it’s compact even by today’s standards. The 6.43-inch screen is sure to attract some potential buyers looking for something more portable. This is a rare thing these days.
The only pitfall we can see revealing the spec sheet is the lack of NFC. It’s now 2021, and even low-end devices offer NFC as contactless payments are gaining popularity in many markets. Not having a regular NFC antenna could be a potential deal breaker for a large group of users.
But for those of you who don’t have the benefit of 5G connectivity and contactless payments in your country, the Redmi Note 10 might just be the phone for you. When some people say something is too good to be true, they are not talking about the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro. Still an unknown brand in South Africa, Xiaomi has rapidly and steadily entered the global smartphone market over the past two years. Most recently, it overtook Samsung as the top smartphone maker in Europe thanks to 67.1% year-on-year growth in Q2 2021.
Xiaomi was in almost the same position as Huawei before 2019 before trade sanctions from the US killed its share of the global smartphone market. That position — offering high-quality, feature-rich devices at affordable prices — allows Xiaomi to be very competitive with big names like Samsung and Apple.
We’ve spent some time with a Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro unit, and the names of Xiaomi’s different smartphone lineups can be a bit confusing. This gets worse when mid-range devices look like flagships, at least on paper. If you’re ready for a round of ‘I can’t believe this isn’t a premiere’, read on.
The first thing you notice when you turn on the device is the sharp 6.67in AMOLED 1080p display. With the option to switch it to 120Hz, it is ahead of competing mid-range devices, most of which can only offer 90Hz. It measures 163mm in length, 76.5mm in width and 8.1mm in thickness. In terms of feel in your hand, those numbers translate into a thin glass sandwich that sits comfortably in your hand. It’s lighter than you’d expect at just 200g.

I say ‘glass sandwich’ on the front because both the front and back are protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5. On the right side, you’ll find the volume rocker and power button, which also doubles as a fingerprint reader. At the top is the near-extinct headphone jack and an equally rare IR blaster that lets you use your phone as a remote for things like the TV. One of the two stereo speakers above, and despite not facing forward, still manages to deliver good stereo performance. There’s a rear-mounted camera bump that houses various sensors, with more coming soon, and a USB-C charging port at the bottom. Starting to feel like a prime again?
The megapixel count doesn’t always mean a bigger number, a better image. But in the mid-range, the 108MP sensor is quite surprising. It also has an 8MP ultrawide sensor, a 5MP telemacro camera and a 2MP depth sensor. The sensor options along with the software options make this a very attractive purchase for new photographers.
The areas where you start to notice that the Redmi Note 10 Pro doesn’t really excel is low-light performance and the lack of optical image stabilization. But compared to other devices in this price range, it is one of the best.
On the front, you take selfies with the 16MP camera. Edge detection is handled well in portrait mode. Xiaomi’s most aggressive beauty options are standard, so if you’re not a fan of overly smooth edges and big, cartoonish eyes, you can dial it down. Or not, it’s up to you.
Redmi Note 10 Lite Review, Pros And Cons
If you’re more of a videographer, the 108MP on the back can handle 4K at 30 fps and 1080p at 30 or 60 fps. The selfie camera can do 1080p video at 30 fps or 720p at 120fps, although we recommend you stick to 1080p. The recording held its own but again failed to impress in low light conditions.
Advancements in smartphone chipsets have come a long way in recent years. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 732G in the Redmi Note 10 Pro was considered a flagship chip just a few years ago. In today’s mid-range devices, it works well, helped by a 120Hz display.
Even so, hardcore gamers should look for a more powerful device, because although the Redmi Note 10 Pro can compete with its latest titles, it should be at lower quality settings.
As for the rest of the internals, our unit comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. You can also find 6GB/64GB flavors or a more spacious 8GB/128GB setup.

Xiaomi’s MIUI skin on Android 11 is an acquired taste. For those who do get it, there are still some annoyances and cons, such as in-app ads and bloatware installed by default. Some default apps are very useful, like the entire Google suite. It allows Xiaomi to fill the void left by Huawei after being blue-tagged by the US.
As for battery size and charging performance, we’re back to playing ‘I can’t believe this isn’t a flagship’. The 5020mAh cell means you get a full day of screen time even with all the extra features like 120Hz and always-on display. When it finally needs charging, you can get a full charge in less than an hour if you use the included 33W charger.
