I took 10,000 steps a day without even thinking twice. Between walking my dogs in the morning, hiking during the work day, going to exercise class after work, and generally being outside on the weekends, my legs are busy. Then, as the cause of so many life changes in the past two years, COVID hit. I was suddenly stuck in a 900 square foot apartment, and the longest walk I had was from my bed to the kitchen and back. That easy 10,000 steps turned into a measly 2,000 or, on a good day, 3,000.

“This razor gives me the smoothest, smoothest shave I’ve ever had! I never get cuts or scrapes, even in hard-to-shave areas.”

Should I Choose A Standing Desk Treadmill Or An Under Desk Bike?

Before long, those eight weeks of working from home turned into a permanent kind of situation. Don’t get me wrong: I absolutely love working from home. I am more productive, comfortable and overall happier than ever in the office. The only mistake was the sharp dive in my daily activity level. Before long, my high-class lifestyle turned into a dull, boring one. I really felt the difference. I lost flexibility, strength and mobility. I’m starting to feel older than I really am. When I finally decided to do something about it, TikTok had the answer (because, of course, it did). Enter: the standing desk and under-desk treadmill combo that literally changed my WFH life.

Didn’t even walk half the day at work, logged tons of miles!! #walkingpad #treadmilldesk #standingdesk #wfh #wfhlife #wfhhacks #productivity #treadmill #workfromhome ♬ Original Sound – Kristen

On TikToks like above. (Algorithms really scare me). Here all these women go to work and spend the day. I want to be like them. After convincing my husband that the equipment was 100% worth the investment – not just sitting unused in a corner of our office – I hit “Add to Cart”. But full disclosure: I thought I was going to be like those girls on TikTok, but once I got on the treadmill, I was wrong. I didn’t start climbing the stairs. However, I slowly added walking to my desk as much as possible into my routine. And I can see my body and productivity benefiting from just one

So if you, like me, like to work from home but want to be more active, walking pads aren’t for you.

Treadmill Desks: The Benefits Of Walking While You Work

All night long. But, it totally helps. Need proof? Here’s how using an under-the-table treadmill improved my health, both mentally and physically

Don’t get me wrong. I love an aesthetic, beautiful home office more than the next person. But if you’re going to fully dive into an ergonomic lifestyle (trust me, your body will thank you when you do), you’ll have to sacrifice a little style. However, I love pretty things too much to completely ruin my home office vibe. So, I searched high and low for the perfect desk and walking pad for my office. Here’s what I know:

I love how beautiful and authentic this table is. Plus, it packs so much functionality into such a small frame that I don’t know if I could live without it. The programmable height settings, USB charging port and storage drawer are a huge step up in functionality from my old desk.

I’m not lying. This treadmill is huge and hard to lose sight of. But the point here is not to look good. This is to help squeeze more movement into your day. This option comes in tons of colors to suit your aesthetic and is a relatively affordable option compared to others on the market. I haven’t looked back once since I ordered it.

Best Small Space Treadmills In 2023

I put on a Fitbit for the first time in 2018 and haven’t been without one since. I love being able to view and track data from my various workouts like steps, calories and heart rate zones. It helps me achieve my exercise goals and keeps me on track. Bonus: Since I’ve been using the Fitbit for so long, I can see how far I’ve come in terms of my overall health, which is a huge improvement whenever I’m feeling down.

I went all in on the first day and walked non-stop for an hour. This was very easy to adjust to in a meeting where I was mostly listening rather than leading. However, that was the only day I struggled as much as I did. The rest of the week, I walk about 30-40 minutes to meetings each day. But to my surprise, it still brings tons of extra steps that I didn’t get before. Even better, walk-in meetings can be completely on the fly. I have more energy throughout the day. (Take that, midday slump.) I feel better being more active. Hate to break it to everyone, but it can make you feel better by moving your body.

However, there was a slight setback on Thursday this week. I have migraines and can’t stand for long let alone walk. I started diving and walking every day from the beginning of the week. (Heck, I think I get at least 15,000 steps a day). In retrospect, that was a bit ambitious. But this first week served as a reminder of two important things: It takes time to build character and I have to give myself grace.

After watching many people share how they use their walking pads at home on TikTok, I decided to make an important change in my routine: I wear my Fitbit on my ankle rather than on my wrist to track my steps more accurately. This is especially important because I find that my Fitbit doesn’t track anything when typing and using my mouse. And what’s the point of all this if I can’t see how well I’m doing? My husband smartly pointed out that even though my Fitbit wasn’t counting steps, my body was. But my Fitbit lit up and said, “Good job!” After reaching my daily goal. It made me feel accomplished. Fortunately, the Fitbit ankle hack works surprisingly well — even if it looks a little funny.

While that one issue was resolved, another one came up this week. Of course, walking and working out at the same time is easier said than done. I’m used to typing and walking pretty easily, but using a mouse is almost impossible. Any tasks that involved a lot of clicking (I’m looking at you, Excel) became sedentary tasks.

That is, tasks such as walking while reading articles or meetings while writing stories or emails fly by. And I find myself busier. Something about walking and working at the same time makes my brain more alert to what’s going on in front of me. So far it has been a winning experience.

At this point, I have completely overcome the learning curve that comes with my new setup. I really look forward to walking every day. I reserve my walking times for meetings or tasks that don’t require a ton of computer work, like reading pitches or going through emails. As I structure my day around the different types of tasks I do (task blocking, if you will), it becomes easier to add walking to my day. When I felt the tide creeping in I reserved the walk around noon.

The change from sitting to walking instead of staring at my slowly fading desk instantly took me out of my funk. It gave me more strength. Before I knew it, that workday was over (with time to spare, I might add), and the rest of the day was management tasks that I always save for the last hour or so.

Urevo Foldi 1 Folding Treadmill Review

As for my body, at this point, after about 30 minutes of walking, I was short of breath. I feel more mobile and healthy than I have in a long time – all it takes is a small change in routine.

By week four, walking was as much a part of my routine as letting my dogs out in the yard every morning. This is what I did when the clock struck 11am on Wednesday this week, but I didn’t feel like it. Instead of beating myself up about it, I remembered what I learned that first week: I don’t mind taking a day off. It just might be
