Samsung is locked in a never-ending smartphone war with its biggest technology rival, Apple. Some might argue that Samsung has won, if not on every front, at least in terms of value for money. Unlike its Californian rival, Samsung has flooded the market with a range of Galaxy phone models spanning the entire price range, from the dirt-cheap Galaxy A13 to the larger Galaxy S23 Ultra.

As with all smartphones, we generally start testing Samsung phones by downloading the Geekbench and GFXBench apps from the Google Play Store. By testing the CPU and GPU respectively, this app creates a set of scores that we use to compare the phone to other Samsung models and similarly priced competitors. For displays, we use a colorimeter and DisplayCal software to measure the accuracy of color reproduction, as well as contrast ratio and maximum brightness results.
The same DisplayCal software was then used to set the brightness to 170 cd/m2 to maintain consistency across devices in our battery tests. Then we turn on airplane mode and run a standard looping video, noting the timestamp where the phone died. Finally, we look at the camera, we do a variety of shots with all lenses, including interiors, landscapes, low light and portraits. We also shoot some high-speed panoramic videos to evaluate the effectiveness of the stabilization.

With the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Samsung is starting the new year with a bang. The top-of-the-line 6.8-inch 120Hz display is also back (perfect for sketching with the included S-Pen). Sure, it’s possible to get cheaper phones in 2023, but if you’re looking for the best Android (and not just Samsung) has to offer, this is it.

It’s not the flashiest smartphone on the market, but where it counts, the Galaxy A21s is an amazing smartphone packed to the brim with features for very little money. Somehow, Samsung has managed to squeeze in five cameras, which again is quite generous considering its cost. It has a large 48MP camera, which is good, as well as a macro lens, wide angle and depth sensitivity. Samsung certainly knows how to make a smartphone at a good price, and with Android 10, an attractive design and a great display, the Galaxy A21s really exceeded our expectations. Don’t want to spend a lot of money on a Samsung flagship but don’t want to skimp on features? Fortunately, the S21 FE has almost everything: top-of-the-line specs and a long list of flagship-worthy features at a reduced price. The S21 FE (or Fan Edition) was cheaper than the S21, but with fast performance, a brilliant display and a great set of rear cameras, it was one of the best value smartphones of last year. Alternatively, if you have more money to spend on a new Samsung phone but still aren’t willing to sacrifice too much in terms of features, the mid-range Galaxy A54 5G is a solid choice.
With a large 6.4-inch screen, accurate colors, a triple camera setup, and strong performance, there’s very little not to like. It goes without saying that battery life is amazing, with the Galaxy A54 5G lasting nearly 27 hours in our tests. The only downside is that the screen isn’t HDR compatible, but that’s a minor bummer considering how much stuff you get for so little money.

Samsung’s flagship does not have to pay without. If you’re looking for a new top-of-the-line phone and don’t have the S23 to spend, last year’s Galaxy S22 is still a good choice. It’s still one of the fastest smartphones we’ve tested, with its top-notch display and triple camera holding its own against newer phone releases like the iPhone 14.
