Samsung is locked in a never-ending smartphone war with its biggest technology rival, Apple. Some might argue that Samsung has won, if not on every front, at least in terms of value for money. Unlike its Californian rival, Samsung has flooded the market with a range of Galaxy phone models spanning the entire price range, from the dirt-cheap Galaxy A13 to the larger Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Which Samsung phone to choose depends on several factors. Budget is likely to be the main component in this decision, but you should also consider important factors such as screen size, display quality, battery life, and camera features. Read our roundup so you can make the most informed choice before you take your next Samsung phone to the checkout.

Samsung is offering the 512GB version of its new flexible phone, the Galaxy Z Flip 5, for the same price as the 256GB version (£1,049), plus a discount if you trade in your old handset. Plus, you get a free year of Disney+ streaming service. Blimey.

As with all smartphones, we generally start testing Samsung phones by downloading the Geekbench and GFXBench apps from the Google Play Store. By testing the CPU and GPU respectively, this app creates a set of scores that we use to compare the phone to other Samsung models and similarly priced competitors. For displays, we use a colorimeter and DisplayCal software to measure the accuracy of color reproduction, as well as contrast ratio and maximum brightness results.

The same DisplayCal software was then used to set the brightness to 170 cd/m2 to maintain consistency across devices in our battery tests. Then we turn on airplane mode and run a standard looping video, noting the timestamp where the phone died. Finally, we look at the camera, we do a variety of shots with all lenses, including interiors, landscapes, low light and portraits. We also shoot some high-speed panoramic videos to evaluate the effectiveness of the stabilization.

With the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Samsung is starting the new year with a bang. Not much has changed on the outside compared to last year’s Galaxy S22 Ultra, but the biggest new addition is the switch to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which not only seriously improves performance, but also extends battery life.

If you’re looking for a new flagship smartphone, there’s nothing better. Samsung’s all-singing, all-dancing smartphone has gotten a major upgrade in the photography department, with a new 200MP main sensor. What impressed us the most was actually the S23 Ultra’s zoom capability. With a pair of 3x and 10x telephoto lenses (and a main 108MP sensor), the S22 Ultra’s images looked stunning in our tests, capturing every detail in perfect color regardless of lighting conditions.

The top-of-the-line 6.8-inch 120Hz display is also back (perfect for sketching with the included S-Pen). Sure, it’s possible to get cheaper phones in 2023, but if you’re looking for the best Android (and not just Samsung) has to offer, this is it.

Looking to spend less on Samsung’s latest flagship? The good news is that the regular Galaxy S23 is still a good choice, provided you don’t mind a few cuts. At £400 more than the Ultra, the Galaxy S23 is a great alternative for budget-conscious shoppers. It uses the same high-spec Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, pumping out the same blazing-fast performance numbers, and its 50MP primary camera also impressed in testing. It also has the added benefit of being smaller than the Ultra (6.1in vs 6.8in), so if big-screen phones aren’t your thing, the entry-level S23 should be your next phone purchase. The most expensive smartphone you can buy right now, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is worth it if you’re lucky enough to afford it, especially since it uses the most powerful mobile chipset, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. , in our tests, delivered the biggest gen-gen-gen in recent years – game performance improvement. With a large 6.4-inch screen, accurate colors, a triple camera setup, and strong performance, there’s very little not to like. It goes without saying that battery life is amazing, with the Galaxy A54 5G lasting nearly 27 hours in our tests. The only downside is that the screen isn’t HDR compatible, but that’s a minor bummer considering how much stuff you get for so little money.

Along with the Fold (shown above), the Z Flip 4 5G is an amazing foldable flagship. And thanks to flip-friendly changes like increased battery capacity, better performance, and a handful of UI improvements, the Flip 4 5G is pretty good, and all for a fraction of the price. Samsung’s flagship does not have to pay without. If you’re looking for a new top-of-the-line phone and don’t have the S23 to spend, last year’s Galaxy S22 is still a good choice. It’s still one of the fastest smartphones we’ve tested, with its top-notch display and triple camera holding its own against newer phone releases like the iPhone 14.

As always, this recommendation only applies if you don’t want to buy a refurbished model. However, if that doesn’t bother you, you’ll be rewarded with a great phone at a very good price. Join us
