The only price segment that adequately caters to the needs of us Indians is the budget segment. The icing on the cake is when these very affordable devices come loaded with high-end features, ending our envy of premium devices in the mobile world. Samsung, like Xiaomi, Realme, is striving for the same and has launched a new smartphone in its budget Galaxy M series called the Samsung Galaxy M31.

Galaxy M31 is the successor of Galaxy M30s and aims to give us a good smartphone experience with all the highlighted features it has. However, is it a worthy upgrade over the Galaxy M30s and a tough budget contender? Read my review to find out.

Here’s Why The #megamonster Samsung Galaxy M31 Should Be Your Next Smartphone

The Samsung Galaxy M31 is well designed and simple when it comes to budget smartphones. There’s not much going on, but whatever we have on our plates is still impressive. When I first held the Galaxy M31, it felt quite heavy. But as it adjusted in my hands, I realized that it was light after all. Made of polycarbonate, the device comes in two color options: Ocean Blue and Space Black. I got the black color and loved the classic black tone of the device, which can never go wrong with a smartphone or anything painted black. Although the smartphone does not have a glass back, it does not come last in the design race and offers us an elegant, not so cheap and strong design.

In terms of construction, the Galaxy M31 features a rectangular rear camera module in the upper left corner. The camera setup includes three camera sensors and an LED flash. There is a fingerprint scanner in the middle, followed by the Samsung branding at the bottom. On the front, there is a water drop at the top and less bezels. The chin has a 3.5mm audio jack, a USB Type-C port and a speaker bezel (from left to right). The head has nothing. On the left side of the smartphone is a SIM card slot and on the left side is the volume rocker and power button. Talking about the volume button, it is placed quite high and reaching it was not as easy as on any other smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy M31 is not a perfectly designed smartphone and does not bring anything new. But, it looks good and I give it good marks for its simplicity.

The Samsung Galaxy M31 features a 6.4-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display, which is known as the Infinity-U display. The name comes from the presence of a drop level. It is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 which is a bit disappointing. The smartphone comes with a number of display features, which mostly happens with every Samsung smartphone. It has adaptive brightness, blue light filter, dark mode, choice between vivid and natural screen colors, Always On Display, accidental touch protection, touch sensitivity and more. While all the screen features prove useful, the accidental contact protection doesn’t really offer any protection as the device can easily be accessed accidentally.

Samsung Galaxy M31 Prime Review, Pros And Cons

The display experience is more than good and this is the area where Samsung fails to shine. For a budget smartphone, we have a screen that becomes pleasant to use. The screen is neither large nor small and is quite bright. The Infinity-U display provides the right screen size for both usability and video streaming. Whether on YouTube or Netflix or any other streaming service for that matter, viewing the content was fine. The smartphone has satisfied a person who watches more Netflix on his TV (Amazon Fire Stick is a blessing here) and this is the positive aspect of the Galaxy M31.

Starting with the camera setup, the Galaxy M31 has a quad-camera setup on the back. It has a 64MP main snapper, an 8MP ultra-wide angle lens, a 5MP depth sensor and a 5MP macro lens. We have a 32 MP front camera. The smartphone supports many camera features like 4K video recording, super slow motion video, Super Steady mode, LED flash, HDR mode, night mode, among others.

The only word I give to the cameras of the Galaxy M31 is good. The cameras perform well in mostly all lighting conditions and that is a positive point. The downside is grainy images in indoor scenarios (zoomed in of course). Most of the time we get detailed images and the results are not overly processed. But they reflect the nuances of oversaturation. The ultra-wide angle lens is quite good, as it is in every other Samsung smartphone, and the HDR feature also works well. However, the macro lens is really uncomfortable and doesn’t capture as much detail as I would expect. Among others, Night Mode works well, not without flaws, and Live Focus works well, but is available as a macro lens.

The 32 MP front shooter is quite good. There is less embellishment and details are highlighted. But, even in this case the images are adjusted to warmer tones and this is a bit disappointing. The video department is doing well. Super Steady mode delivers the stability it claims to offer, 4K videos are also good (360fps recordings) and slow motion videos are above average.

Samsung Galaxy M41s Price In India 2023, Features, Launch Date, Full Specifications, Reviews, How To Buy Onlinesa/offline?

The Samsung Galaxy M31 features the company’s Exynos 9611 processor, coupled with 6GB of RAM. The smartphone gets two variants of internal storage: 64 GB and 128 GB, of which I got the latter. The storage space can be expanded using a memory card up to 512 GB. The smartphone works as a good daily driver. I’m a ‘smartphone basic’ person and don’t push a device to its limit. Therefore, for me, the Galaxy M31 did more than good. From using social media to streaming videos to playing games (both PUBG Mobile and Candy Crush Saga) to clicking photos — all tasks were done with ease and I didn’t face many issues with the smartphone. However, there were times when it stuttered and stuck with a number of background apps. This was greatly reduced with a simple ‘reduce animation’ trick from the Settings menu. As a reminder, this trick also worked well with the Galaxy S10 Lite.

The battery is the main feature of the Galaxy M31. With a massive 6000 mAh battery, the Galaxy M31 clearly stands out in the budget arena. The battery, with my use, easily lasted me two days and I knew I was at peace (with all the extra tracking) on a single charge. One problem I encountered was the not-so-fast charging. The 15W fast charging didn’t charge the device very quickly, so I expect Samsung to focus on this area for its budget smartphones as well.

As for the interface, I liked the Samsung UI 2.0 with the Galaxy S10 Lite and will stick with it. The UI is clean and easy to navigate. Complete with focus mode, digital wellness, parental controls, dark mode and a few gestures, I had no issues with the smartphone interface. However, what I didn’t like was a bunch of preloaded apps (bloatware) and this time I didn’t like its presence. Among other things, the fingerprint scanner and Face Unlock were easy to use and the audio quality was also good. However, I missed the in-box headphones, which I think Samsung should finally start adding with its budget smartphones as well.

The Samsung Galaxy M31, with a starting price of Rs. 14,999,  is another move by Samsung to maintain its position in the budget segment. And this time, it’s not a bad effort, as the massive 6,000mAh battery steals the show. However, upgrading from the Galaxy M30s is not a good idea as both smartphones share most of the features. It competes with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro which has a MediaTek Helio G90T processor and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and the Realme XT which has an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Samsung Galaxy M21 Gets A Price Cut

While the Galaxy M31 has some shortcomings compared to its competition, the smartphone is no less and that is why it is an option to consider for its interface (I like it better than MIUI) and good cameras except for the battery.
