Sony recently launched a new premium smart TV in India. Sony’s new Bravia X80K is a 55-inch 4K Smart TV that uses an LED panel, unlike other TVs in this lineup from Xiaomi and LG that use OLED screens or even Samsung’s QLED versions.

The Sony Bravia X80K TV is priced at Rs 94,990 for the 55-inch screen in India. While the price tag of almost one lakh might sound like a lot, it’s not exactly the company’s premium lineup as its OLED models cost much more. However, Sony is known for its image quality regardless of the panel used. So, can the Sony Bravia X80K deliver a great viewing experience despite the lack of an OLED panel? Let’s find out.
Before we get into the specs and image quality, let’s take a quick look at the X80K’s design and build. The X80K features a bezel-less design on all four sides, while the bottom panel houses Sony’s status indicator. The thickness of the TV is 2.7 inches, the back panel has a checkerboard design. The TV has VESA wall mounting holes on the rear panel.
However, since the ports are moved to the side, they are easy to access even when the TV is mounted on the wall. I used out of the box stands which are fairly easy to set up although you will need a wide table. The stands are made of metal and are quite strong, so the TV does not wobble. The TV has a plastic build but that wasn’t a problem as the TV was quite sturdy. Additionally, there are clips that attach to the back of each leg for better cable organization.
Sony has taken a more minimalist approach to the Bravia X80K’s remote control. The design of the remote control was quite fancy with well placed buttons. The remote control also has all the buttons needed to provide excellent functionality. The remote has dedicated buttons for Google Assistant, YouTube, YouTube Music, Netflix and Prime Video. In addition, there are standard buttons, including navigation controls.

There are no channel buttons, but the single “123” button on the top can be used to call phone numbers to switch to the desired channel. You can also pair the device with a TV and control it with the TV’s remote control, eliminating the need to use two remote controls. Simply put, Sony’s new remote is the perfect combination of form and function.
The Sony Bravia X80K has a standard set of ports. All ports are located on the right side of the TV and the power connector is on the left side. On the back there are two USB Type-A 3.1 ports and four HDMI inputs. However, you’re limited to HDMI 2.0, and the HDMI 3 port supports eARC. The TV also has an Ethernet port, an RS-232C port, an IR input, and a conventional antenna/cable.
There are two notable absences here: an HDMI 2.1 port and an analog audio jack, although the latter has been replaced by a digital optical audio output. The TV also has built-in WiFi (802.11ac) and Bluetooth v4.2 as opposed to the newer Bluetooth 5.0. The lack of an HDMI 2.1 port is disappointing, but other than that you have pretty much everything you need.
The Sony X80K uses a 4K LED panel with a standard refresh rate of 60Hz. Sony uses the X1 4K HDR processor, which was the same one used on its successor, the X80J. The TV also supports Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG formats. The Sony X1 processor also features object-based HDR remaster and Dynamic Contrast Enhancer, the former of which analyzes and adjusts the color of individual objects on the screen, while the latter automatically adjusts contrast settings to suit your environment. In addition, the TV can automatically adjust the brightness depending on the ambient lighting in the room.

The X1 Sony X80K processor is combined with X-Reality Pro and Triluminos Pro technologies. Triluminos Pro uses the TV’s wide color gamut to determine color by saturation, hue and brightness and reproduce natural tones in every detail. Additionally, X-Reality Pro helps enhance your footage, delivering stunning results. Object HDR also processes objects individually for greater depth and texture, resulting in more realistic images.
The only area where the X80K fell short was brightness. In most cases you won’t have a problem, but colors aren’t as vivid as you’d expect when watching HDR content. The TV also comes with Dolby Vision Bright and Dolby Vision Dark, the latter a little darker than the former, which is standard for most shows that support Dolby Vision. The Sony Bravia also reproduces crisp and clear images with good color reproduction, providing excellent picture quality.
The X80K has a number of preset picture modes that can be toggled through settings for gaming, entertainment, sports and more. The panel also had excellent viewing angles and maintained image quality despite viewing from different angles. The Sony’s superior picture quality and upscaling tend to make up for the shortcomings of using an LED panel instead of a QLED or OLED display. However, the X80K’s blacks were said to be uneven compared to OLEDs, and brightness levels were lower compared to higher-end QLEDs.
Navigating the Sony TV was quite comfortable, because the work went smoothly, without slowdowns. When playing games with the X80K, the TV automatically switches to Auto Low Latency mode. The TV recognized when I connected the PS4 to the HDMI 2.1 port and automatically switched to a mode that offered more responsive gameplay and reduced input lag. In addition, MEMC technology handles motion blur for fast-moving game objects to ensure smooth gameplay despite the 50Hz panel. However, there is no support for VRR, AMD FreeSync or Nvidia G-Sync. As for gaming with the X80K, it’s best suited for more casual games and open-world games, as opposed to shooters, which are best enjoyed at high frame rates.

Software-wise, the Sony X80K runs Google TV, which is a sleeker skin compared to Android TV. One of the biggest benefits of using Google TV is that once you set it up on one device, all your important settings are transferred to other devices connected to Google TV. Plus, the interface is much cleaner than most Android TV options. The interface offers recommendations across various OTT platforms, offering a personalized homepage. You also get animated wallpapers that can be used when the TV is not in use to show off the picture quality.
The Apps section gives you access to recommended and installed apps, while the Library gives you access to saved content. Google TV’s recommendations are pretty robust, and you can also add content from different platforms to your playlist in your library. The Sony X80K also comes with Chromecast and AirPlay support. It also supports Amazon’s Alex and Apple’s HomeKit. You also have access to the Play Store to find tons of apps. Google TV certainly helps improve the quality of entertainment.
While the Sony impressed on the visual front, the Bravia X80K’s audio was just about decent. The TV uses a standard 2.0 channel speaker system with 20 watts of power with Dolby Atmos support. You can calibrate the volume to optimize the sound based on your room layout. Sony uses a specially designed X-balanced driver to deliver optical sound. The overall sound quality here is quite decent and suitable for watching news or reality shows or even watching cricket and football.
There is no judder at high volumes and vocals were quite clear. However, the speakers lacked bass and had a relatively narrow soundstage. The speakers here are pretty average, and you’ll want to pair the TV with an external audio system to enjoy movies and shows in surround sound. The TV also has a remote microphone for hands-free access to the Google Assistant, which worked well in a large room.

For a 4K LED smart TV, the Sony Bravia X80K is priced high. However, the X80K is anything but your average 4K LED Smart TV. The Bravia X80K’s picture quality was consistently top-notch, while the TV was particularly good at upscaling content and maintaining vivid colors. In addition, the TV also has a highly functional remote control with a minimalist design, the borderless design gives the TV an elegant look. Finally, the Bravia X80K also has the latest version of Google TV, which had a number of features and was particularly good at organizing and recommending content.
There were a few caveats here too, including the TV’s inability to handle blacks, and being an OLED model, the brightness level is noticeably lower than QLED TV models at this price point. Meanwhile
