The Galaxy S21 Ultra doesn’t do anything in terms of bulkiness and feels bright and attractive. The distinguishing factor is the thick aluminum plate surrounding the camera array, which gives the camera a more portable feel. It’s not a continuation of the sleek, solid aluminum side bezels, but a separate block with a matte finish that matches Victus’s matte Gorilla Glass back.
We were a little skeptical about this design feature at first, but now that we’ve had time to get used to it, we really like it. If it weren’t for these amazing details, the Galaxy S21 Ultra would look too plain.
In case you’re wondering, the phone doesn’t feel too heavy – it’s very well balanced. The frosted glass resists smudges and scratches well, and the protruding edge of the camera block resists dents well – we recommend using a case to preserve the original look.

Samsung is slowly moving away from the visible curves of the screen and with the S21 Ultra, it takes another step towards reducing them. I love the subtle curves of the dial and I’m glad they’re still here. The border around the screen is almost flat and the top and bottom are very narrow.
In addition to the pre-installed screen protector, there’s Victus Gorilla Glass to protect the front. It also has IP68 water and dust resistance.

In the past, Samsung’s under-display fingerprint sensor was relatively slow even for leading companies, but that’s no longer the case. Samsung upgraded 2 years later to a faster and larger ultrasonic sensor (1.71x), which is very fast and reliable. It also places our thumb where it naturally is.

With the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, users no longer have to choose between Full HD or 2K resolution due to increased refresh rates or battery issues. You can use 2K resolution and 120Hz, which is exactly how we’ve used phones, which is the biggest differentiator for us in this generation. In comparison, the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ are now limited to Full HD+ resolution.
The Galaxy S20 Ultra will support a dynamic refresh rate of 120Hz, likely based on the same simple HoP Back technology as the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, which isn’t a true VRR solution, but has more subs or mode switching options. After all, this helps save battery in high refresh rate mode.

During our review, we could experience a smooth 120Hz while scrolling and transitioning the UI. Samsung’s adaptive refresh rate sync didn’t seem too conservative when it came to higher refresh rates.
The 6.8-inch AMOLED screen has a wide color gamut and is compatible with HDR10+. We immediately switched to the “natural” profile for relative color accuracy.
As always, Samsung’s OneUI software features customizable Always On mode and a stunning dark theme that uses deep AMOLED blacks.
This screen is of very good quality. It’s only when you compare it to mid-range or premium flagship killers that you can truly appreciate its beauty. Colors are vivid, dynamic range is wide, and outdoor visibility is simply amazing.

The Exynos 2100 is the first Samsung chipset to directly host an ARM core without any modifications. The chip is based on the 5nm process and has 1 main Cortex X1 core along with 3 Cortex A78 performance cores and 4 Cortex A55 power cores.

We haven’t yet tested Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888, which Samsung uses in other markets, but we can see daily performance improvements in Samsung’s latest flagships.
We have 12 GB RAM and 256 GB internal memory variants. We had no issues with multitasking or high-end gaming. The Galaxy S21 Ultra has better thermal management and runs much cooler than the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.
Unsurprisingly, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is equipped with the latest connectivity options. It has UWB connectivity, the latest Wi-Fi 6e, 5G support, Bluetooth 5.2 and a USB 3.2-based Type-C port.
It’s OneUI 3.1 based on Android 11, which has been used a lot on our previous Samsung phones and is also one of our favorites. Samsung packed most of the features into Android 11, and unfortunately, Google’s Smart Home dashboard couldn’t cut it. Instead, Samsung has its own “Devices” tab, easily accessible from Quick Settings. Finally, Samsung allows users to replace the Bixby control panel with Google Feed. Unlike many other manufacturers, Samsung still supports automatic call recording.

Daylight performance is, as expected, impressive. The camera can capture a wide dynamic range and preserve detail. Colors are balanced with a bit of oversaturation.
The ultra-wide camera performs very well in the right light. In dark scenes, the quality of the wide-angle camera deteriorates dramatically.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra is only as impressive as the artificial light inside. The image retains enough detail and has excellent contrast.

In dark scenes, the camera controls the sound. Night mode is smart enough to display complex scenes properly. The gradient colors of the sample sky below are accurately reproduced.
Live focus mode is now portrait mode, which works faster and better. Samsung uses a 3x telephoto lens to capture depth information in portrait mode, thereby zooming in on the entire portrait. There are also several effects that can be added to portraits. Selfies have great detail and preserve natural skin tones.
For video, the Galaxy S21 Ultra can record optically stabilized HDR10+ video and record 8K at 24fps. The recording and video quality is again excellent. This year, Samsung added a Director’s View mode that lets you shoot from both the front and rear cameras at the same time.
