The Samsung Galaxy M31 has started receiving the Android 11-based One UI 3.0 stable update in India, according to users on a community forum. The Galaxy M31 is the latest phone in Samsung’s portfolio to be updated to Android 11, which also makes it the first mid-range phone to receive the OS update. The Samsung Galaxy M31 launched in February last year with Android 10 and was reportedly among the first mid-range phones to also be part of the One UI 3.0 beta program. The phone has all the new UI features present in One UI 3.0 as well as the latest Android security patch.

The Samsung Galaxy M31 Android 11 update brings new icons and better customizations to add call backgrounds and set the phone to Always On-Display. The update aims to improve autofocus and add a search function to the gallery. The Settings menu has a simpler look with the One UI 3.0 update based on Android 11, and some improvements have been made to the Samsung keyboard.
It also brings some productivity, media and device control improvements to the Samsung Galaxy M31. A changelog shared on the community forum indicates that some apps will need to be updated separately after installing the One UI 3.0 update.

Samsung is also said to have updated the Galaxy Fold series, Galaxy S10, Galaxy Z Flip, Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy S20 FE 5G and several other flagship smartphones to Android 11 since early December 2020.

The new Galaxy M series and the reinvented A series, which debuted a little over a year ago, show that the company has not only embraced the idea of offering great specs at low prices, but is also keeping up with roughly twice the incremental updates for each anus . Not all of the models Samsung introduced over the past year got a lot of attention, but the Galaxy M30 and its successor, the Galaxy M30s, made our recommended budget phone lists.
We are in no mood to let this momentum slip and we have the new Samsung Galaxy M31 with us. We’ve only been able to spend a little time with it so far, but we can give you our first impressions.
The main feature of the Galaxy M30s (Review), its 6000 mAh battery, is carried forward. The 48-megapixel rear camera has been upgraded to 64-megapixel and there is now a fourth rear camera. The Galaxy M31 is presented in two variants; both have 6GB of RAM and you can choose between 64GB and 128GB of storage, for Rs. 14, 999 and Rs. 15, 999 respectively. This should start a new round of battles with our current best smartphones under Rs. 15,000.

In terms of looks, the Galaxy M31 is surprisingly simple. No gradient, pattern or reflective coating. While we’re glad to see this, it certainly goes against current trends and expectations. Some people might find the space black and ocean blue color options too plain and bland (and the rumored red option hasn’t been released, at least not yet). It remains to be seen how the glossy finish will hold up to scratches and scuffs, but it picks up fingerprints very easily.
The front of the phone is pretty standard for a budget device these days. The chin is quite thick and there’s a simple notch at the top of the display for a single 32-megapixel front-facing camera.
Samsung has used a Super AMOLED panel which is quite bright. Colors appear vivid and punchy, if a bit oversaturated. We’ll tweak a few settings and see how this works during our in-depth review, which will be published soon.
The battery, of course, makes this phone relatively thick and heavy at 8.9mm and 191g. Still, it doesn’t feel unbalanced in the hand, and the back offers a decent enough grip that the phone never slipped when we had to reach the top corners of the screen with our thumbs. The back curves slightly to the sides, which also helps usability, and we like the fact that the camera module barely sticks out.

Speaking of the module on the back, we have a 64-megapixel main camera that uses Samsung’s ISOCELL GV1 sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, a 5-megapixel macro camera and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. There is a live focus mode and a night mode. The camera app is pretty easy to bypass.
The power button on the right is easily accessible, but the top volume control is not. However, we are glad that the fingerprint sensor on the back is not only big enough, but also very comfortable. At the bottom is a USB Type-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a speaker. The tray on the left will hold two Nano-SIM cards and a microSD card.
One disappointment, at least on paper, is the fact that Samsung hasn’t updated the Exynos 9611 processor, which was used by several previous Samsung phones, including the Galaxy M30s. While our experience with the phone was mostly smooth, Samsung’s competitors aren’t sitting back and already have more powerful options available in this price segment.
Still, we’re happy to see Android 10 and Samsung’s OneUI 2.0 skin is relatively polished. We noticed a “Receive marketing information” checkbox during the setup process, which is checked by default; if left as is, Samsung says it could use email, SMS and push notifications to send you “news, special offers and recommendations about our products and We also think that the animated lock screen and bright, sweet wallpapers are too much

Being an M-series device, you don’t get a lot of frills. The box has nothing but a 15V charger, a USB Type-C cable and a pin to eject the SIM card. The charger and cable are black, which is interesting, but 15V might be a bit weak to quickly charge this 6000mAh battery.
