A price segment that suits the needs of Indians is the budget segment. These very affordable devices are the cherry on the cake when they are packed with advanced features, which will end the envy of the premium devices in the mobile world. Samsung, like Xiaomi and Realme, is trying to do the same and has launched a new smartphone in the budget Galaxy M series called the Samsung Galaxy M31.

The Samsung Galaxy M31 is beautifully designed when it comes to budget smartphones. Nothing much happened, but what we had on our plates was still interesting. When I first held the Galaxy M31, it felt overwhelming. But when I put it in my hand, I realized it was light. Made of polycarbonate, the device is available in two color options: Ocean Blue and Space Black. I love the black color and love the classic black tone of the device, which can never be mistaken for a smartphone or anything painted in black. Although the smartphone does not have a glass back, it does not come last in the design race and offers us a sleek, cheap and powerful design.
As for the build, the Galaxy M31 has a rectangular camera module behind the top left corner. The camera setup includes three camera sensors and an LED flash. There is a fingerprint scanner in the middle and Samsung branding at the bottom. On the front, there is a waterdrop at the top and minimal bezels. The chin houses a 3.5mm audio jack, a USB Type-C port, and a speaker grill (from left to right). Nothing in the head. The left side of the smartphone houses the SIM slot and the left side contains the volume rocker and on/off button. Talking about the volume button, it is very high and not as easy as in other smartphones.
Samsung Galaxy M31 is not a perfectly designed smartphone and it does not bring anything new. Still, it looks decent and I give it a good mark for clarity.
The Samsung Galaxy M31 has a 6.4-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED screen, known as the Infinity-U Display. The name comes from the presence of water droplets. It’s protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which is a little disappointing. The smartphone has several display features which are common in every Samsung smartphone. There’s adaptive brightness, blue light filter, dark mode, choice between vivid and natural display colors, always-on display, accidental touch protection, touch sensitivity, and more. Although all the display features prove to be useful, the accidental touch protection does not provide any protection as the device can be accessed accidentally.
Honest Samsung Galaxy M31 Review
The display experience is more than decent, an area where Samsung never fails to excel. For a budget smartphone, we get a display that is comfortable to use. The display is neither too big nor too small, and very bright. The Infinity-U display ensures the right screen size for usability and video streaming. Whether it’s YouTube or Netflix or any other streaming service, watching content is great. The smartphone appeals to people who prefer to watch Netflix on their TV (the Amazon Fire Stick is a boon here), which is a positive aspect of the Galaxy M31.
Starting with the camera configuration, the Galaxy M31 has a quad camera setup on the back. It has a 64MP main snapper, an 8MP ultra-wide angle lens, a 5MP depth sensor and a 5MP macro lens. We get a 32MP front camera. The smartphone supports many camera features like 4K video recording, super slow motion video, super steady mode, LED flash, HDR mode and night mode.
The one word I have about the Galaxy M31’s camera is decent. The camera performs well in all lighting conditions, which is a plus point. A negative point is the grainy image in indoor situations (when zoomed in, of course). Often we get detailed images and the results are unprocessed. However, they reflect saturated saturation tints. The ultra-wide-angle lens is quite decent, and the HDR mode works well on other Samsung smartphones. However, the macro lens is too moody and fails to capture as much detail as I would like. Among other things, the night mode works well, not so well, the live focus works well, but like a macro lens.
The 32MP front shooter is pretty decent. Beautification and highlighted details are minimal. However, even in this case, the image is warm and slightly unpleasant. The video section works well; Super Steady mode delivers the stability it claims to deliver, 4K video is also good (recorded at 360fps) and slow motion video is above average.
Samsung Galaxy M31 Review: The Go To Mid Range Smartphone
The Samsung Galaxy M31 is powered by the company’s Exynos 9611 processor and has 6GB of RAM. The smartphone gets two internal storage variants: 64GB and 128GB, of which I got the latter. The storage can be expanded up to 512 GB with a memory card. The smartphone works as a decent daily driver. I am a ‘basic smartphone user’ person and don’t push the device to the limit. So, for me, the Galaxy M31 does more than enough. From using social media to video streaming to playing games (PUBG Mobile and Candy Crush Saga) to clicking pictures – all tasks were done effortlessly and I didn’t face much trouble with the smartphone. However, there are times when it gets stuck with some apps in the background. A simple ‘Reduce Animation’ trick from the Settings menu reduces this significantly. As a reminder, this trick also works on the Galaxy S10 Lite.
The main highlight of the Galaxy M31 is the battery. The Galaxy M31 stands out in the budget arena with its 6,000mAh battery. The battery in my use lasts two days and I know I’m at peace (with all parties watching) on a single charge. One problem I faced is that the charger is not very fast. The 15W fast charging device doesn’t charge very fast, so I hope Samsung focuses on this area for budget smartphones.
As for the UI, I started liking Samsung UI 2.0 with the Galaxy S10 Lite and will keep it that way. The UI is clean and easy to navigate. With focus mode, digital well-being, parental control, dark mode and some gestures, no issues were encountered with the smartphone interface. However, what I don’t like are some preloaded apps (bloatware) and this time I don’t like their presence. Among other things, the fingerprint scanner and face unlock are good, and the audio quality is good. However, I miss the earphones in the box, which I think Samsung should eventually add to their budget smartphones.
Samsung Galaxy M31, starting at Rs. 14, 999, is another move by Samsung to hold on to the budget segment. This time, it’s not a bad effort, as the 6,000mAh battery steals the show. However, upgrading from the Galaxy M30s is not a good idea as the two smartphones share a lot of features. It competes with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, which is equipped with a MediaTek Helio G90T processor and Corning Gorilla Glass 5, and the Realme XT, which has an in-screen fingerprint scanner.
Samsung Galaxy M31 Review: A Complete Package In The Budget Segment
Although the Galaxy M31 has some shortcomings compared to the competition, the smartphone is not inferior, which is why its UI (which I think is better than MIUI) and decent camera from the battery is an option to consider.
