I’m still shocked that you can buy a smartphone with a vibrant AMOLED display and two days of battery life for £245. For those who depend on content on their phones, the Samsung Galaxy M31 is an absolute steal, just don’t expect it to impress you in any other way.

Samsung’s A-series smartphones are a staple in most UK stores, and for good reason. It aims to appeal to the same size mid-range audience currently focused on by Xiaomi and OnePlus. But although the Galaxy M series is an important part of Samsung’s global offering, it is far less well known.

Samsung Galaxy M32 4g Smartphone Review

The Galaxy M smartphone is hugely popular in India and it tries to pack high-end specs into an affordable format – at least on paper. The range recently received a major revamp in 2020, with one phone – the Samsung Galaxy M31 – arriving in the UK market.

The Galaxy A series has done quite well in the mid-range segment, but can Samsung pull the same trick again and lower the price range even more? It’s time to find out.

Measuring 159.2 x 75.1 x 8.9 mm and weighing 191 grams, the Galaxy M31 is a bulky phone by modern standards. Having recently gotten used to the lightweight nature of the Pixel 3a XL, the M31 feels like a mammoth by comparison. But with the added weight comes a sense of weight that lets you know this is still a solid product, even if it’s on the affordable end of the spectrum.

Inside that space, the phone has a 6.4-inch display with a teardrop-shaped notch at the top and a minimal notch at the bottom. The phone costs just £245 and I was surprised by how uncompromising it was on the front-facing elements. There’s even a 3.5mm headphone jack (albeit at the bottom).

But once you turn the phone over, things start to feel a little different. For starters, the M31’s plastic back is an absolute fingerprint magnet, and the glossy casing itself doesn’t sit well in the hand. Unless you’re absolutely sure you’ll never drop your phone, we recommend picking up a case just in case.

While there’s a slight camera bump here, the camera’s quad-sensor array is barely noticeable whether the phone is in your pocket or flat on a table (screen facing up).

Like the A series, Samsung’s M series marketing focuses on three core features: display, camera and battery life. While we’ll get to the latter two later, I’m happy to report that Samsung nailed it with the screen on the M31, which is arguably the phone’s best feature (besides price).

The aforementioned 6.4-inch display uses an AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2340 x 1080, ensuring that what’s on the screen, whether it’s your home screen background or your second viewing of The Last Dance on Netflix (respect ), always appears.

Of course, even with high-end FHD+ resolution, if you want to enjoy a full-screen experience, you’ll have to deal with notches that cut into the action. Granted, it’s nothing compared to Apple’s now severely outdated shelf, but it’s still there.

The only other niggle is that, unlike the new Moto G 5G Plus, it has a basic 60Hz display. But given that very few phones at this price point jump to 90Hz these days, it’s a forgivable omission.

I’m used to a stripped down and almost perfect version of Android 10 on the Pixel 3a XL. Samsung’s custom skins feel very clunky, although it’s not the worst.

For example, there’s very little bloatware apart from Samsung’s own various apps, which tend to serve their purpose, although I don’t see why I’d use the Galaxy Store when Google’s App Store is right there.

Fortunately for the M31, everything works well despite its affordability. This is thanks to the Samsung Exynos 9611 SoC processor combined with a solid 6GB of RAM. Don’t expect mind-blowing speeds from the M31, but this setup results in pretty decent performance where it counts.

For example, the dedicated fingerprint sensor is fast and reliable (arguably better than some in-display fingerprint sensors I’ve encountered on more expensive phones). The same goes for Face Unlock, where a nice little animation appears below the front-facing camera to let you know it’s doing its thing.

One annoying issue that keeps cropping up, however, is the inexplicable incompatibility with certain wearables. While the situation seems to have stabilized after a few software updates, at first the phone intermittently disconnected from my Whoop 3.0 Band and TicWatch C2 Plus smartwatches. If you’re not a smartwatch fan, you’ll probably never run into this problem, but for fitness fanatics like me who like to track health stats, it’s going to be a huge pain in the ass.

If you like to play mobile games on your lunch break, the M31 should meet most of your gaming needs – just don’t expect to be able to run Fortnite on it right now. As launchers keep pointing out, the Galaxy M31 is not one of the phones currently optimized to play Fortnite, and digging into the game revealed that the game is stuttering and almost unplayable. Surprisingly though, the M31 had no trouble running online matches in Call of Duty: Mobile, while smaller games like Alto’s Odyssey also performed well.

Samsung Galaxy M31 Prime Review, Pros And Cons

Blame it on my aging laptop’s somewhat spotty Wi-Fi connection, but in these new work-from-home situations I’ve decided to use my phone as my primary device for Zoom calls and listening to music. Listening to music, recording my indoor workout and enjoying some YouTube videos during lunch. Suffice it to say, I’ve tested the Galaxy M31’s battery performance and it’s been pretty impressive.

The Galaxy M31 packs a whopping 6,000mAh battery and lasts around two days on a single charge, though most of the time was connected to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth on, multiple wearables and a pair of wireless headphones connected for good measure. This is the basis for the heavy use activities I mentioned earlier. In short, you’d have to be a serious procrastinator to consider draining your battery completely in one day.

The Galaxy M31 proves that having multi-day battery life doesn’t have to cost the earth, and if you plan to use the M31 as your primary media device, the incredible battery life pairs well with the phone’s AMOLED display. – A match made in heaven. You can get hours of content on this thing.

The only let down is that 15W fast charging is said to be included, I beg to differ. When plugged into an outlet, it takes just over two hours to charge from 8% to full. If charging your phone overnight is part of your daily routine, you’ll never have a problem, but if you need to charge it quickly before you leave home, it won’t be possible.

Samsung Galaxy A03s Review

On paper, the promise of a Samsung smartphone with four rear cameras for under £250 sounds too good to be true, but unfortunately it is. There’s a 64-megapixel f/1.8 main sensor on the back, an 8-megapixel f/2.2 ultrawide sensor, a 5-megapixel f/2.2 depth sensor and everyone’s favorite 5-megapixel f/2.4 macro camera.

Of course, I don’t have the same disdain for macro cameras on smartphones as other reviewers, and it’s fun to take an artistic shot of a bug or a flower every now and then, but let’s face it, the real ones The most popular ones are ultra-wide and main camera.

Starting with the latter, I was really surprised to find how lively the M31’s main sensor was at producing images. For example, the portrait below of my very helpful fiance has a natural bokeh effect and the colors appear bright without looking saturated.

It’s only when you start zooming in on portraits that you notice the camera’s inability to capture finer details, a problem that becomes even more apparent when you switch to the M31’s ultra-wide-angle lens.

Samsung Galaxy M31, Galaxy M53 Get August 2023 Security Update

Zooming into the corners of any wide-angle shot taken with the M31 reveals a distinct lack of detail. I can understand the appeal of wanting a wide-angle sensor, but if it’s just going to do a subpar job, then I’d rather see the resources spent on improving the main sensor. In comparison, the Pixel 3a only has a single rear sensor, but it’s one of the best smartphones for photography.

The video is also a bit mixed. Surprisingly, the Galaxy M31 can
