Samsung has expanded its budget segment lineup with the launch of its latest M series smartphones. The company has launched the Galaxy M31 in the country at a starting price of Rs 16,856. The smartphone comes with a capable processor, a large battery and a quad-camera setup. The company offers a good package at this price which will surely give tough competition to others. The design of the Samsung Galaxy M31 was taken from its predecessor, the Galaxy M30. At first glance it is quite difficult to differentiate between the two devices. The smartphone comes with a 6.4-inch Infinity U display with slim bezels all around. The smartphone has smooth edges and rounded corners, making the device comfortable to hold. In addition to the large screen, there is also a 32MP selfie camera on the front. The volume rocker and power button are on the right, and the SIM card tray and microSD card slot are on the left. The mono speaker, USB Type-C charging port and 3.5mm audio jack are located at the bottom of the device. The Samsung Galaxy M31 comes with a glossy back panel that attracts a lot of fingerprints. The rear panel houses the quad-camera setup, fingerprint sensor and Samsung branding. This smartphone never fails to impress in the design segment.
Samsung Galaxy M31 Review: Perfect Smartphone For Power Users
Samsung Galaxy M31 flaunts a 6.4-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with 2340×1080 pixels. The screen is protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on top. The screen offers wide viewing angles and the large screen makes watching movies and playing games a pleasure. The screen also comes with a simple blue light filter that reduces eye strain by limiting the amount of blue light emission. There is also a dark mode that will darken the entire phone. You can either manually enable Dark Mode by going to the Settings menu or schedule it to activate automatically. There is also an option called ‘Accidental Touch Protection’ which can prevent accidental touches on the screen. In addition, the device comes with an always on display that shows the time, date and pending notifications. Despite being a budget smartphone, this smartphone gives a good display.
Samsung Galaxy M31 is powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 911 octa-core processor based on 10nm. The company did not upgrade the smartphone in terms of processor like its predecessor – the Galaxy M30s also runs on the same chipset. The smartphone packs 6GB of RAM and comes in two storage variants – 64GB and 128GB. Users can expand the storage up to 512BG by adding a microSD card. Compared to the Galaxy M30, the Samsung Galaxy M31 comes with an increased RAM capacity that makes multitasking easier. We didn’t notice any lag or stuttering while using the phone. The device is very smooth and fast when switching programs and even during casual gaming. The fingerprint sensor on the back also works quickly to unlock the device.
The Samsung Galaxy M31 runs on Android 10 operating system with the company’s One UI 2.0 layered on top. The user interface is very clean and the large app icons give a nice look to the device. It also has an app drawer where users can hide all apps and keep the home screen clear. Like other Samsung smartphones, it also comes pre-loaded with all the usual Samsung apps as well as some third party apps like Facebook, Amazon, Snapchat and more. Samsung has not included Bixby in the Galaxy M31 and along with it the Bixby Vision app is also missing from the device. The device also comes with Digital Wellness and Parental Control which falls under the category of simple gestures. For example, users can double tap to wake the device and users also have the option to hide the three-button navigation layout and use full-screen gestures to control the smartphone.
Camera is one of the major upgrades coming with the Galaxy M31. The Galaxy M30s has triple rear cameras, while the Galaxy M31 has a quad camera setup. The device’s rear cameras include a 64MP main sensor, a 5MP macro camera, an 8MP ultra-wide lens and a 5MP depth sensor. Up front you will get a 32MP selfie camera. The company claims that both cameras are capable of recording 4K videos. Samsung has also added Night Mode to the camera for a better photography experience. As always, the Samsung Camera app is quite clean and easy to use and users can find different modes to shoot within the app. Along with this, the app also provides a toggle that allows users to switch between the primary and wide-angle lens cameras. There is also a scene optimizer in the program that instantly recognizes the scene and sets the camera accordingly. We were quite pleased with the camera results of the Samsung Galaxy M31. The device focused quickly and also produced an adequate amount of detail in the images it captured. Rotating to the wide angle lens camera gives some very nice images as well as a wide field of view. However, we personally liked the macro camera, which produces really detailed images. Photos taken in daylight were better than those taken indoors. The night mode included in the device also works quite well and it reduces the noise of the images taken at night. The 32MP selfie camera does a satisfactory job as selfies taken both indoors and outdoors turned out well.
