If you’re thinking about replacing your TV this holiday season and keeping an eye out for Black Friday sales, consider that you might be buying a bigger TV than you thought. If it’s been a few years since you bought your current TV, you might be surprised to learn that TVs that were once considered “great” are often considered more “mediocre.” Even a 50-inch TV is no longer widely considered a “hundred-inch” TV these days.
What Size Tv Should You Buy?
TV sizes have increased over the past few years because manufacturers have been able to make larger screens cheaper, and 4K and 8K resolutions have made larger TVs more usable. The ultra-thin design also means that the larger screen takes up less space.
So when you’re checking out holiday deals and Black Friday deals, keep an eye out for more sizes than you might think. The truth is, you may have gone too far. how big is it Maybe you don’t need a wall-mounted or wall-mounted TV, but in most homes, a 65 or 75-inch TV will suffice.

For example, THX recommends that you multiply the landing distance in inches or centimeters by 0.835. This will give you the recommended screen diagonal. So if you’re like most people and sit about 9 feet (108 inches) from your TV, THX recommends a 90″ diagonal screen. So the big 65-inch TV you’re looking at isn’t “too big,” at least as far as THX is concerned.
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers recommends a viewing angle of 30 degrees, which is slightly smaller than THX. To comply with SMPTE recommendations, multiply the seat distance by 0.625. So with our 9m example, that means the TV is about 68 inches (so a 65 or 70 inch model would do).
While these are great guidelines, don’t treat them as hard and fast. It’s easy to get caught up in the numbers game when the reality is much more complicated. There are many more features in the game.
Almost all new TVs have Ultra HD 4K resolution. The maximum value is 8K. The smallest and cheapest models are still HD only (1080p or 720p).

To see all the details in a 4K or 8K resolution picture, you have to be sitting very close, or have a really big TV. In fact, even “big” TVs are too small to see all the adjustments they’re capable of if you’re sitting nine feet away. Or in other words, unless you sit very close together, or bought a very large TV (over 100 inches), your next TV will have a great resolution. So, you don’t need an 8K TV. On the other hand, larger TVs will show more errors for lower quality content. If you find yourself noticing stuttering, video noise, or other artifacts while watching shows and movies on your current TV, larger models will show these issues more noticeably. Keen-eyed viewers looking for a big TV should also look for better video streaming, such as 4K and Blu-ray streaming.
Another important factor to consider is what I call “room dominance”. How big does the TV have to be for that looming black rectangular slab to be the only thing in the room? This feature is completely subjective. As someone who has had a 12 foot wide screen at home for over a decade, and has reviewed large TVs, I would choose a large screen monitor over a TV any time (at least because when the “TV” is turned off, the projector screen is white or grey, and the TV is pitch black). A TV larger than 80 inches can take up the entire space. A wall mount might help, but your TV room is in danger of becoming a TV room.
When in doubt, try cutting cardboard to the size of your desired TV and see how it goes in your room. You might want to paint it, or put a black cloth over it. This is what it looks like when it’s turned off (there’s something like Samsung’s ambient mode anyway). Maybe this doesn’t bother you, but it does for others. Just know that once the TV is in it will be much better than cardboard and probably brighter. By the way, you can also see that it is very large. It really depends on your room, decor, and the opinions of other people sharing the room.

Honestly, I don’t agree with any “rules” regarding viewing distance and screen size. I think the SMPTE and THX numbers are slightly skewed towards TV. I think they underestimate what modern technology can easily do for those who want more.
I’m sitting nine feet from the 102-inch screen. This is just a 16×9 section. The full screen is 2.35:1 and the diagonal is 128 inches. When I stretch a 1080p projector to full screen width, I can’t generate pixels, but on a standard 16×9 view, I can’t. 4K looks fantastic. Watching a TV this size is addictive and I love it.

Do you want to travel a lot? Well, that’s a different question. I found the larger screen size to be more comfortable on the eyes, since most of your line of sight is taken up by the nearly even screen brightness. In a dark room, your pupils will naturally be blocked from light due to the large screen.

On the contrary, I find it very disturbing to watch a small screen in a dark room because your pupils are dilated (due to the dark room) and this annoying bright light (tv). The final decision is a personal choice. My purpose here is to show a rough idea of what is possible or recommended. For me, I always make the mistake of being “too big”. My ex-boss once said that no one ever regrets buying a TV they thought was “too big”. My opinion is that a 50″ TV is too small for most rooms. That’s not to say I think everyone should have a 102-inch screen, but the truth is that 50-inch tablets aren’t much bigger than the 36-inch CRTs of yesteryear. With 65-inch and even 75-inch TVs getting cheaper these days, it’s worth considering if you have the space.
If you want bigger, and the ability to control the ambient light in the room, consider a projector.
