The incredibly powerful Galaxy S10 may be the best in the big segment, but there are options that are better for your wallet. If you want to blend in without biting the tail, Samsung’s Galaxy J4 Plus offers a flagship-like design and a fraction of the price.

As the name Plus suggests, this is another big thing from Samsung. Launched at the same time as the J6 Plus, the J4 Plus has the same 6in screen size, but shaves a bit off the price.

If you open this review in one tab and the J6 Plus review opens in another, let me help you if you are looking for differences in the table of contents. The J4 Plus uses 1GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel camera on the back instead of the dual-band.

When it comes to the difference between the two, this has the potential to be a better choice for those looking for a functional, great-looking phone that won’t break the bank.

The appeal of the Galaxy J4 Plus is worth its price. While flagships like the Galaxy S10 or iPhone Xs cost around £900, the Galaxy J4 Plus is on sale for a fraction of the wallet-busting price, coming in at just £127.

It may seem tempting, but we’ve seen a big swing in this price bracket recently, and there are a lot of great options to consider. Motorola’s Moto G7 series of phones are impressive, starting at £150, while Vodafone’s Smart X9 is still the best budget option at £100.

Aside from the few changes I mentioned above, the J4 Plus and J6 Plus are pretty much the same, right down to the phone’s width and weight. Oh, and the colors – Samsung has spun the color wheel and introduced three optional colors: gold, pink and black.

That said, here is everything I have to say about the J6 Plus. It’s a great-looking phone, even if it’s lost the beautiful curves that have been Galaxy flagships in recent years.

Of course, as a budget phone, the design is flawless. The reflective back panel picks up fingerprints easily, which is a milder irritation than anything else. Most annoyingly, there’s no fingerprint reader, so you’ll have to rely on old-school PIN or pattern methods to unlock the phone, or use the phone’s face unlock feature, which is a bit slow.

Well, if you’re hoping for USB Type-C fast charging, you’d better look elsewhere. While other phones in the J4 Plus’s price bracket use this fast charging method, Samsung’s is limited to micro USB and the 3.5mm headphone jack on the left side.

The handset’s screen is IPS instead of OLED, which means it doesn’t have the incredible contrast and deep blacks of Samsung’s flagships, but it’s still a powerful display with strong, vivid colors. At 6in diagonally, it’s a big beast, and even combined with its low-end 720p resolution, it’s not particularly sharp, but getting this much screen space for a device this expensive is still a win.

In technical testing, our colorimeter showed that the J4 Plus’ panel was able to cover 85% of the sRGB color gamut, and that colors were reasonably balanced, with an average Delta E of 2.31. Good for a phone of this price, the decent aspect ratio of 1,236:1 ensures that text and images look as good as possible. A peak brightness of 354cd/m² isn’t great, and you might find yourself scrolling through your Facebook feed as summer begins.

The real problem with the J4 Plus is where corners have been cut to make the phone cheaper. The obvious flaw is in the raw strength of the arm. This year we’re treated to Qualcomm’s older Snapdragon 425 processor (for lack of a better word), clocking in at 1.4GHz and backed by just 2GB of RAM.

With these numbers, you can expect the same power as the Moto E5, which wasn’t quite as good when it was released late last year. Don’t get me wrong, the Moto E5 is an expensive phone – but at £119, you wouldn’t expect the latest and greatest games to run smoothly on a setup with the same DNA. And compared to the 1GB RAM of the J6 Plus, the J4 Plus doesn’t play well with Android.

It’s strange, because Samsung makes a lot of things about the phone’s multitasking capabilities. Yes, it’s true that multitasking is easier on a large screen, but a slow CPU makes the process equally unpleasant.

One thing’s for sure: the Galaxy J4 Plus is no speed monster. In Geekbench 4’s multi-core benchmark, it scored 1,779 points, which is 54% lower than Vodafone’s cheaper Smart X9. Things aren’t so good with single-core performance, with a total of 665. Here’s how the Galaxy J4 Plus stacks up against its competitors:

The J4 Plus also struggles with gaming. The low 5fps score in the GFXBench Manhattan 3.0 test shows that it doesn’t maintain the ideal 3D display, but I didn’t have too many problems with everyday titles.

It’s a slightly better story when it comes to the durability of the J4 Plus, although it can still be improved. In our continuous video recording test, the J4 Plus lasted a total of 14 hours and 27 minutes, which is 11% longer than the Vodafone Smart X9. All the same, Motorola’s budget G-series flagships are well-placed.

As for the phone’s camera capabilities, the J4 Plus sports a 13-megapixel camera unit on the back with a respectable f/1.9 aperture. It lacks the second part of the lower sensitivity of its big brother, the J6 Plus, though I don’t think that’s a big loss. A 5-megapixel, f/2.2 selfie camera is on the front of the phone.

As long as there’s plenty of light, the Galaxy J4 Plus is a solid photography companion. Of course, the results don’t look as crisp as those captured by flagships like the Galaxy S10 or the Huawei P30 Pro, but the results are decent-looking photos for the price.

Images come out with more detail, color reproduction looks nice and accurate, and the phone’s HDR algorithm does a good job of lifting shadows and softening overly bright areas of the scene. All is well, but you start to see a few problems when the lights go out. In general, images add noise to many flavors, although not harmful.

Finally, the Galaxy J4 Plus is limited to Full HD video recording at a maximum frame rate of 30fps. Motorola’s range of budget phones can record 1080p video at 60fps and 4K at 30fps.

The limited specs of the Samsung J4 Plus make it a cheap budget phone, and you could argue that the £40 saving on the J6 Plus is well made. Losing the depth-sensing camera would be unfortunate for photographers, but would be better served by opting for the Moto G7 instead.

However, that doesn’t mean the Galaxy J4 Plus is worth recommending. I think Samsung has been a bit behind when it comes to budget offerings over the past year or so, and its focus on the high end of the market seems to be paying off in general. The Galaxy J4 Plus is a great option for those who want a big screen on a small budget, but you don’t get much more than that.
