The Samsung Galaxy A50 dazzles and shines, promising the semblance of a high-end smartphone for less money. It looks great, and the main camera quickly outputs photos. But without knowing how much the Galaxy A50 will cost, it’s hard to reach a verdict at this stage.

Samsung has announced a couple of new mid-range phones at MWC 2019: the Samsung Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A30.
Samsung Galaxy A50s Review: Good Upgrade But Still Similar To Galaxy A50
Thus, the Samsung Galaxy A50 is the larger and more powerful of the pair, boasting a triple-lens main camera with an in-display fingerprint scanner, 15W fast charging, and a large 6.4-inch Super AMOLED screen. It also looks great and promises to deliver some high quality smartphone for less money.
The Samsung Galaxy A50 is on sale now and you can buy it unlocked without a SIM card on Samsung’s official website for £309.
The Samsung Galaxy A50 inherits many of the attractive features of the Galaxy S10 flagship phone. Three cameras? Check. In-display fingerprint sensor? Check. Infinity display (translation: really thin bezels)? Check also. No 5G, however (but did you really expect it to be a 5G phone?).
As with the Galaxy S10 and other triple-lens phones, the three cameras (25MP main sensor, 8MP wide-angle sensor, and 5MP extra depth sensor) work together to give you detailed digital zoom with minimal loss of detail compared to digital zoom on a single lens (and some dual lens cameras) where the software simply zooms in on what’s in the frame.

As I played with the phone, I was able to zoom it up to 4x and take some clear photos of the cockpit around me, but I was unable to successfully transfer any Bluetooth files for posterity. The Galaxy A50 may not have worked with the final software it will ship with, but it certainly was quick to focus and take pictures.
I didn’t get a chance to try out the in-display scanner on the bench as I had limited time that I couldn’t devote to scanning the fingerprints.
As for the display, it’s really cool. It looks razor-sharp – I couldn’t identify a single pixel – and the Galaxy A50’s brightness was strong enough to punch through the oppressive light of the stand-mounted spotlights.
This suggests that external visibility will be good. The glossy surface, however, means it will suffer from glare.

The Samsung Galaxy A50 will be available in four color options; black, white, coral and blue. All the models I saw on the booth had blue edges and the same iridescent metallic finish on the back.
Despite the glossy back, the Samsung Galaxy A50 doesn’t seem to have the same noticeable fingerprints as phones with similar finishes.
The rear finish is actually quite amazing. While there are plenty of shiny metal phones with glossy finishes, the Samsung Galaxy A50 shines with a prismatic effect, giving the Galaxy A50 a 70s retro disco vibe. This is probably unintentional. Either way, the rainbow-colored highlights are a nice touch.
Other features you get with the Samsung Galaxy A50 are things like Samsung Pay, as well as Bixby Voice – Samsung’s potential Siri and Alexa voice assistant – and Bixby Vision, which lets you do things like translate menus with cameras.

The Samsung Galaxy A50 looks and feels very premium. Without knowing how much the 4GB + 64GB or 6GB + 128GB versions will cost – or even when/if they arrive in the UK – it’s hard to give a preliminary verdict on this at this point. If the price is right, it can sell for a very high price, if it is too expensive, it will be another forgotten mid-range phone.
We haven’t received a test sample of the Samsung Galaxy A50, so we can only share our first impressions of the phone with you. If you’re interested in a mid-range phone, we’ve got plenty of samples we’ve tested that we can recommend. At about the same price as the Galaxy A50, the Huawei P30 Lite should grab your attention thanks to its large storage and good main camera. There’s also the Pocophone F1, which has a few weird omissions and weird features or two, but it’s a very affordable and heavy duty phone.

Samsung recently gave us the opportunity to review its Galaxy A50, and it might be the perfect device if you’re looking for a great mid-range device that won’t break the bank. Starting at $267 on Amazon and $299 retail, the Samsung Galaxy A50 is essentially an affordable flagship.
Samsung has not only been aiming for a new relaunch of the A series to provide just such an experience. He also built the gadget with the future in mind. In other words, this is a smartphone that aims to deliver cutting-edge software. The company outfitted it with hardware powerful enough to run smoothly.
Due to this approach, in many cases this smartphone will be indistinguishable from the flagship for most users. That’s certainly a good thing, but not without caveats as Samsung chose to use low-end hardware to keep costs down. It is what they are worth exploring.
But even at less than $300, no one should expect major disruption here. This smartphone is ready to meet the needs of almost everyone.

When discussing the build and hardware of the Samsung Galaxy A50, the first thing to note is that it is not technically raid resistant. So it is not waterproof in any sense of the word. Your device is resistant to splashes, sweat and other light moisture. But don’t expect this phone to survive heavy rain or submersion in water.
These caveats aside, this smartphone looks very well made. While Samsung has opted to use a flat screen on the front, the in-hand feel is the same as flagships. This is, of course, thanks to the similar back panel design. This back also looks like glass, though Samsung hasn’t explicitly stated this and calls the design “Glasstic”. It is also significantly more flexible. As such, it looks weaker than other premium materials.
At the same time, all buttons and ports fit perfectly, nothing dangles. Also included is a 3.5mm headphone jack, a feature that is becoming rare despite the backlash from consumers over its removal.
In terms of looks, Samsung has opted to incorporate a waterdrop notch into what it calls the Infinity-U screen. The earpiece is located in a slot covered by a grill above the front camera, and the “chin” area is thin. As noted earlier, the back panel looks like glass, accentuated by rounded metal edges.

Thanks in part to that, and in part to Samsung’s use of thin profile cameras on the back with great color options, the Samsung Galaxy A50 looks as good as it feels compared to today’s flagships.
Samsung offers this phone in black, white, blue, or coral. Each one is “inspired” by “diffused light” and it shows how it reflects light. My test sample of the Samsung Galaxy A50 is painted blue, but it hardly looks that way in high light. There is only a hint of blue, usually visible around the edges or across the device in flat lighting.
In most other cases, the device displays rainbow-effect hues not unlike the flagship Galaxy S and Note.
