The Galaxy A50 starts at just under Rs 20,000, while the Galaxy A50s is offered at a slightly higher starting price of Rs 20,999. Is the Galaxy A50s enough to be worth buying under Rs 25,000? We review to find out.
Holding the Galaxy A50 will instantly remind you of the Galaxy A50. It brings the same sleeping, thin and light body that we loved on the original model. With a thickness of 7.7mm and a weight of only 166 grams, the Galaxy A50s is a very light and easy to hold smartphone. The slim form factor combined with the curved back panel offers a great feel in the hand.
The curved back panel is made of plastic, which is a bit more disappointing on a phone over Rs 20,000. However, the plastic body makes the phone light and comfortable to hold, so this is a positive trade-off, if any. .
The biggest visual change comes in the panel itself, which has a checkered pattern on the back and each box offers a different shade of the same color. Galaxy A50s is available in Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush White and Prism Crush Violet color options. The purple color definitely stands out from the visuals. I actually have the black option, which looks grayish and offers a prism-like gradient when you look at it from different angles.

The Galaxy A50s is a tall phone, but easy to use with one hand. Getting to the top of the screen will require some readjustment of your grip, but the buttons are quite long and offer a very pleasant tactile feel. The volume keys and power button are on the right side of the thin bezel. On the left is a SIM tray that can hold two nano SIM cards and a microSD card. At the bottom of the bezel, on either side of the Type-C port, you can see the 3.5mm headphone jack and speaker grille.
Samsung hasn’t changed anything when it comes to the display, and rightfully so. The Galaxy A50 features a stunning 6.4 inch FHD+ (2340×1080) Super AMOLED Infinity-U display, which is also featured on the Galaxy A50s. It’s no surprise that the AMOLED display looks great with vibrant colors, excellent brightness levels and viewing angles.
The Galaxy A50s has 1080p resolution, which is clear and sharp for watching videos, playing games and reading text. The added bonus here is that the phone is also Widevine L1 certified; This means you can stream content in true HD clarity on platforms like Netflix and Prime Video.
Samsung uses a new 2.3GHz Exynos 9611 SoC chipset inside the Galaxy A50s. The A50 got an Exynos 9610. The difference between the two processors is marginal, so don’t expect a huge increase in performance. The Exynos 9611 is based on the 10nm FinFET process and, like its predecessor, is equipped with a GPU MP3 Mali-G72.

Out of the box, the Galaxy A50s is as fast as you’d expect. Apps open and load quickly, and I didn’t encounter any crashes during use. The 6GB RAM model we received for review can easily handle switching between apps, but you may experience some stuttering while doing so.
The Galaxy A50s performs well enough for everyday use, such as browsing the web or social media apps, messaging and video streaming. However, it won’t feel very fluid or smooth as you’ll notice some stuttering when navigating between apps. It runs games like PUBG smoothly at medium graphics, but anything higher than that will cause framerate drops and lag. The 10nm chipset is highly efficient and helps reduce battery consumption while gaming.
Overall, the Galaxy A50s offers good mid-range performance, but we expect a lot more from phones over Rs 20,000 today. Its speed does not come close to that offered by the Redmi K20 in this segment. It even feels sluggish than the Realme XT, which costs around Rs 16,000. As long as you don’t stress too much, the Galaxy A50s should be fine, but you’ll have to consciously hold yourself back.
Galaxy A50s comes with One UI based on Android Pie. It’s unclear when the phone will be updated to Android 10, but Samsung has been pretty consistent in upgrading its portfolio to the latest Android version. You will now know that One UI offers a system-wide dark mode that the AMOLED display on the Galaxy A50s can really take advantage of.

One UI also offers a cleaner and smoother interface with a new layout that lets you do most of your work with one hand. Other than a few Samsung apps, Microsoft office apps, and third-party apps like Helo, DailyHunt, and Snapchat, you won’t find much bloatware on the Galaxy A50s.
Galaxy A50s comes with in-display fingerprint sensor and face unlock. Both biometric options are slower compared to what brands like Oppo, Realme, and Vivo offer. For example, the fingerprint sensor is slow and the animation doesn’t feel smooth at all. The bottom-end speaker can get loud, but not very clear at higher levels. Galaxy A50s also supports Dolby Atmos surround sound via wired headphones and Bluetooth.
Samsung has improved the triple camera setup on the Galaxy A50s. While the A50 offers a 25-megapixel main camera, the Galaxy A50s has a 48-megapixel sensor that keeps it up to date with the competition. The other two cameras in the setup include an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The selfie camera has also been upgraded from 25MP to 32MP sensor.

The Galaxy A50’s camera definitely seems capable of handling phones like the Redmi K20 and Realme XT. Their main camera can take really good pictures during the day, which is not surprising. As long as there is enough light in your environment, the Galaxy A50s will take attractive photos.

But in low light, the phone starts struggling. The dedicated night mode doesn’t get the kind of computational photography Oppo and Xiaomi can offer. Although noise reduction does its best, photos will look grainy and overall photos will look softer than clear and detailed.
You can easily switch between the main camera and the wide-angle lens to add more room to the frame. Wide angle is useful in difficult spots or if you’re looking for a new perspective shot. Keep in mind that quality takes a big hit when you switch to the 8MP wide-angle lens. Compared to the high resolution of the main camera, detail and sharpness will be lacking in wide-angle photos. There is also a noticeable change in color tone and the photo will appear darker compared to the main camera.
Galaxy A50 can shoot some sharp and beautiful videos in 1080p and 4K. It can record 4K video at 30fps, which looks very good, but will be shaky compared to shooting at 1080p. The camera gets some EIS (electronic stabilization) in 1080p recording; that’s good enough if you’re handheld recording while walking.
The upgraded front camera also captures some clear and natural daytime selfies as beautification effects are disabled. Indoors or after sunset, selfies will become less sharp and clear as it gets dark.
