All in all, the A53 5G looks to be a solid upgrade from the A52 5G and a great phone in its price range. However, it doesn’t introduce enough upgrades to justify buying it if you already have the A52 5G or another decent mid-range phone.

The A53 5G has a matte plastic back that is less susceptible to fingerprints. In terms of color, in addition to white and black, two new colors have been added, blue and peach.
Size-wise, it’s slightly larger than the A33 at 6.2 x 2.9 x 0.3 inches (159.7 x 74 x 8.1 mm). The volume rocker and power button are easily accessible on the right side of the A53’s chassis. Both feel solid when clicked, giving a sense of good build quality.

I have no problem viewing the screen from an angle, and colors look stunning in both Vivid and physical mode, which isn’t always the case with other mid-range phones.
The A53 5G has an optical fingerprint scanner built into the display, unfortunately, it’s not Samsung’s famous ultrasonic sensor. This is one of my main complaints about the A53. It’s not that there are no ultrasonic sensors, it’s how slow the optical sensors are. It takes a long time to unlock the phone like this.
Fortunately, facial recognition has improved over the previous generation thanks to the Exynos 1280 and the faster AI processing it offers. This is enough to make me choose the fingerprint alternative. Of course, you lose a bit of security in this case, but I’d take it rather than delay the unlock.

The color accuracy chart gives you an idea of how close your monitor’s measured colors are to its reference values. The first line contains the measured (actual) color, while the second line contains the reference (target) color. The closer the actual color is to the target color, the better. These measurements were made using Portrait Displays’ CalMAN calibration software.

Compared to the A52 5G which has a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset inside, the Galaxy A53 5G is equipped with Samsung’s own Exynos 1280 SoC, which is built on a 5nm process. It has a total of eight cores, including 2 high-performance 2.4GHz Cortex-A78 cores and 6 high-performance 2.0GHz Cortex-A55 cores. As for the GPU and APU, Samsung claims a 2.1x performance boost for both compared to the 2021 A52 5G.
However, benchmark scores tell a different story. It’s not just the numbers that speak here. I also found that, especially when playing games on the Galaxy A53 5G, there were some issues at times. For example, in Minecraft, I often noticed frame drops during gameplay.

That said, other tasks such as web browsing, watching videos and navigating the user interface were smooth without any issues.
The Galaxy A53 comes with Samsung’s One UI 4.1 (latest stable version) based on Android 12. The software runs flawlessly on this phone. Menus and different functions can be found easily thanks to the intuitive and well-organized user interface.
As for updates, Samsung guarantees 4 years of major software updates, so you don’t have to worry about that.
The A53 5G features a 64 MP F1.8 main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS). In addition to the main lens, there are 12MP F2.2 ultra-wide, 5MP F2.4 depth and 5MP F2.4 macro lenses.

Now, admittedly, these specs on paper are identical to the Galaxy A52 5G’s camera system, but don’t be too quick to judge. There is one big difference that makes the camera system on the A53 5G more powerful than its predecessor, the Exynos 1280.
Portrait mode has been improved for both the front and rear cameras thanks to improved AI performance, including the ability to adjust the blur in this mode. Another feature that the new chipset brings to the table is the addition of portrait lighting in portrait mode.
While there’s no telephoto camera on the Galaxy A53 5G, the Exynos 1280 enables what Samsung calls AI zoom. We tested this AI zoom/enhanced digital zoom on the A53 5G and noticed an improvement, mainly in the amount of detail in the shot.
However, more important than the AI zoom and better portrait mode is the huge improvement in dynamic range when taking photos and videos. Samsung has retuned its color science to bring more vibrant and saturated colors. Whether you prefer a more natural or processed look is a matter of personal preference.
