Samsung Galaxy A52s 5g Smartphone Review: With More Power In Its Latest Version

One look at the $399 Samsung Galaxy A51 and its laundry list of features, and you might wonder why anyone needs the $1,000 Galaxy S20. You get a 6.5-inch OLED display, four rear cameras, and a large 4,000 mAh battery for a very reasonable price.

There’s just one problem: Samsung may have upped its mid-range phone game, but so has the competition. And while the Galaxy A51 can claim some advantages over the similarly priced iPhone SE 2020 and Google Pixel 3a, it still suffers from sometimes poor quality low-light photography that often fails to impress, and battery life is just decent .

In fact, it is one of the best budget phones out there; However, as you’ll see in our Samsung Galaxy A51 review, it’s more than a jack of all trades.

The $399 Samsung Galaxy A51 launches on April 9. You can buy it unlocked directly from Samsung, or through a variety of carriers, including Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, and Xfinity Mobile. Amazon also sells an unlocked version.

Only one configuration of the Galaxy A51 is available in the US, and it comes with 4GB of RAM and a generous 128GB of storage. If you need even more space, you can add a microSD card up to 512GB.

While $399 is a fair price for a phone with all the features the Galaxy A51 boasts, Samsung has some promotions to make it an even better deal. The company is offering up to $220 in Galaxy A51 credit if you trade in a Galaxy S9, Note 9 or earlier; iPhone X or older; Or Pixel 3, 3 XL or 3a. With an eligible trade-in, you can also pay off an unlocked Galaxy A51 for 24 months with zero interest for $14.58 per month. For a limited time, Samsung is even throwing in a free pair of first-generation Galaxy Buds with every A51 purchase.

One tip for buyers: Be wary of other Galaxy A51 models floating around retailers online. If the price seems too good to be true, chances are you’re looking at a Latin American or international variety rather than a US version tailored for national networks.

Many phone makers like to talk about how their flagship designs come down to cheaper mid-range models, and Samsung makes similar noises with the Galaxy A51. However, shockingly, I found that I actually prefer the look of the A51 to the Galaxy S20 family.

There are several reasons for this. First, the A51 is light—really light. Samsung has always done a good job of making weighty phones that are still well-built, and the A51 is proof of that. Its 6.5-inch display is nearly two inches larger than the 4.7-inch panel on Apple’s new iPhone SE, yet the A51 weighs just 0.8 ounces. Holding them in one hand, you can tell that the galaxy is a little heavier, but not as much as you might think.

Second, the A51’s screen is flat, which is a real breath of fresh air from the curved panels that are inevitable in all modern premium phones. It’s hard to put your finger on it, but a flat screen is easier to use and easier to live with. Some curved panels look odd (eg the Motorola Edge Plus), while others are magnets for accidental taps, exacerbated by poor palm-rejection software (eg the OnePlus 8 Pro). But the A51 is attractive, with ultra-slim bezels and a screen that perfectly follows the silhouette of the body. These features in particular make it feel like a more expensive phone than it is.

But it gets better: the A51 has a headphone jack — something you won’t find on Apple’s cheaper new iPhones. Unfortunately, though, it’s not IP-rated waterproof; To be fair, it’s rare at this price.

I only have two minor criticisms of the A51’s design. First, while the iPhone SE and Pixel 3a both have stereo speakers built into the earpiece and bottom of the bezel, the A51 routes all audio through the latter. It’s not a deal breaker at this price, though it does lead to the classic sound deadening problem when you tilt the phone sideways while gaming.

Second, the materials that go into the A51 don’t feel cheap, though they’re no substitute for the iPhone SE’s glass and metal, or the Pixel 3a’s semi-matte finish.

Samsung actually has a name for what it uses on the back – it’s officially known as ‘Glass’ – and I’m happy to say it looks more like real glass than that buzzy name might lead you to believe. I’m not even bothered by the subtle shades of our Prism Crush Black review unit. Normally I’d find this sort of thing presumptuous, but the A51 doesn’t catch the light in a bad way. However, I could do without the prominent lines and triangular design on the back as it’s a constant reminder of the phone’s budget.

One of the best things about last year’s Galaxy A50 was its AMOLED display – a luxury usually reserved for more premium devices. The new Galaxy A51 retains that stunning panel, except this time it measures 6.5 inches from corner to corner, but retains the Full HD resolution.

Not all OLED panels are created equal, so the Galaxy A51’s screen can’t match the astronomical maximum brightness or high dynamic range of the Galaxy S20 series screens. The A51 achieves a full-screen brightness of 565 nits, which is pretty high – although you’ll only see that much brightness outdoors in strong sunlight. Normally, the highest manual setting leaves you with around 353 nits, which is much lower than the iPhone SE’s 653 nit maximum.

But then, of course, the iPhone SE’s screen isn’t OLED’s LCD. And because the iPhone’s screen is LCD, it can’t deliver the vibrant colors and deep blacks that the A51 usually pulls off.

As I watched Ken Miles’ epic final lap of Ford v Ferrari on the Galaxy A51, I was mesmerized by the sunlight breaking through the trees at the Arnagehorn at Le Mans, bathing the trees in a warm glow while leaving the forest depths appropriately hazy. I’m used to seeing this kind of contrast in flagship phones, but it’s not what I’d expect from a budget device like this Galaxy.

At the default Vibrant setting – which is extremely saturated, it must be said – the A51 delivered 212.2% of the sRGB color space, compared to the iPhone SE’s 111.2% and the Pixel 3a’s 182.3%. The A51’s Delta-E color accuracy also takes a hit under the Vivid profile, with the Samsung phone registering a Delta-E rating of 0.30 under our light meter, compared to 0.20 and 0.18 ratings from Apple and Google’s price dial. (Numbers closer to zero are better in the Delta-E test.)

You might expect one or two cameras from a $400 phone, but the Galaxy A51 has a whopping four on the back: a 48-megapixel, ƒ/2.0 wide-angle camera, supported by a 12MP ultra-wide, 5MP depth, and 5MP depth. Macro optics. A 32 MP sensor handles selfie duties on the front.

That’s a lot of megapixels, and when the conditions are right, the A51 can extract a lot of detail and put together images that rival the iPhone SE’s best work. Samsung’s Live Focus mode isn’t limited to people, like Portrait mode, so you can capture shallow depth-of-field shots of anything — even that flashlight. Overall, the iPhone’s white balance and exposure are more realistic here, although I like the A51’s depth effect, even if some details around the edge of the lens are artificially blurred.

This ultra-wide shooter shines when the sun shines. The iPhone SE doesn’t have a similar wide-angle lens, so iPhone owners will be loathe to take backyard photos like the A51 took. Apple’s device also played a strangely warm game here, which is not true given the conditions. The image from the Galaxy device isn’t perfect—the shower on the right is completely out of place, for example—but there’s surprising detail in the Samsung’s image overall, and good dynamic range when transitioning from shadow to daylight.

And I was impressed with the A51’s macro camera – a fiber optic that’s easy to miss given the bulk of this device. I could
