Samsung Galaxy A50 Review: Sammy Does Mid Range Right

Samsung is moving fast these days – apart from their excellent flagship S10 series, they have introduced a series of mid-range A series phones. Due to the increasing competition, Samsung is also getting really aggressive in terms of pricing and that’s why the A50 is priced at Rs. 19,999 starts.

It is the company’s first mid-range offering with an in-display fingerprint scanner. But hold on to your excitement – it doesn’t use the S10’s ultra-sonic fingerprint scanner, but a more traditional optical scanner that most other brands (like OnePlus, Vivo, Oppo) use. While the competition is using fourth-generation in-display sensors, the A50’s fingerprint sensor resembles first-generation technology. It is slow at fingerprint recognition and fails to work about 50% of the time. Samsung released a software update to improve speed/accuracy but we only saw minor improvements. In comparison, Face Unlock works smoothly – much better than what we’ve seen on M series smartphones.

The A50 sports a gorgeous 6.4-inch, Super AMOLED Full HD display with an Infinity U style notch. Screen content is a joy to watch and impresses with slim bezels, high brightness and deep blacks. However, it uses the old Gorilla Glass 3 for screen protection which is disappointing. Despite the polycarbonate back panel, we liked the sturdy build quality of the device. The back panel is super glossy and reflects light in all the colors of the rainbow. As always, a glossy finish is prone to smudges and fingerprints.

Performance is where the phone confuses us. It is powered by Samsung’s octa-core Exynos 9610 processor coupled with 4/6GB RAM and 64GB storage. Our review was the 4 GB RAM variant and it can easily play games like PUBG and Asphalt. However, when it comes to performance, we were surprised to see random lag and sluggishness. This was true for basic functions such as swiping left on the Bixby screen, switching between running apps, editing photos and closing apps to return to the home-screen. This becomes more visible when there are more than 10 apps running in the background – our theory is that there is no optimization between the new Exynos chip and the operating system. Battery life is the phone’s strong point – we were able to get about a day and a half of backup on a regular basis. Also, there is support for fast charging and a fast charger is provided in the box.

Samsung Galaxy A50s Review: Sports 48mp Camera, Enhanced Processor Ups Gaming

The Galaxy A50 has a triple camera setup at the back that delivers excellent results in daylight. Photos have good detail and the camera interface is zippy. It has a wide-angle lens which is great for shooting landscapes and architecture. The third lens is a depth sensor that helps with live focus and offers better edge detection. Portrait photos came out pretty good with a decent amount of bokeh, but there are phones with better cameras available in this price segment, like the Poco F1. The problem is that low-light photos get bogged down in soft details and we often end up with blurry photos. We also don’t like the fact that video recording in the default camera app is limited to Full HD resolution and you can’t switch between the standard and wide-angle lens while shooting. The front-facing 25MP camera performs similarly to the rear camera – decent photos in daylight but lacks detail when used in low light.

Some other features of the phone that we liked include a dedicated microSD slot for storage expansion, loud output from an external loudspeaker, and Dolby Atmos for audio. However, selling the Samsung Galaxy A50 for Rs 20,000 is difficult. The similarly priced Poco F1 offers better performance with its Snapdragon 845 processor and also scores higher on camera and battery performance. Redmi Note 7 Pro at just Rs. 13,999 offers a better processor, premium glass design, excellent 48MP dual rear camera and similar battery life. If you are stuck on the Samsung brand, you can get the Galaxy M30 for Rs 14,999. With the same Super AMOLED display, triple camera setup and a larger 5,000mAh battery.
