Samsung Galaxy A12 Review: Budget Phone For Content Creators?
Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A12 as the direct successor to the Galaxy A11 ahead of its arrival in the US in April 2021. It is in the Galaxy A13 series.
The Galaxy A12 comes in a total of six different configurations, making it one of the cheapest Samsung phones with at least 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. However, there are currently only three in the US (listed above). Whichever way you go, you get four color options: red, blue, black, and white.
The Samsung Galaxy A12 ships with Android 10, although an Android 11 update with Samsung One UI 3.1 is available via OTA. It also ran the July 1, 2021 Android security patch during testing. It should receive two years of software updates, as well as four years of security patches, which will carry the Galaxy A12 until late 2024 or early 2025. .
Moving past the software, you’ll find the MediaTek Helio P35 SoC powering Samsung’s entry-level device. The memory and storage options are 6GB and 128GB respectively, with a microSD slot for further expansion. A 5000 mAh battery and a 6.5-inch HD+ panel are complemented by an Infinity-V display. India has a Helio P35 replacement for Samsung’s Exynos 850 chip.

Samsung has left the wired headphones out of the box, but this time around it’s providing a charger and a USB-C cable. If you need a little help getting started, you’ll also get a SIM eject tool and a basic boot guide. The Samsung Galaxy A12 is also available on Verizon, UScellular and AT&T.
The budget-friendly phones seem to have decided to include glass backs and fingerprint magnets. Fortunately, the Samsung Galaxy A12 bucked the trend and instead opted for a hybrid option that’s gentler in the hand. I also appreciate the raised diagonal ridges as they add an extra flair to the overall design.
The large 6.5-inch screen means you’ll need a good grip if you want to drop the case. Although the screen sticks to HD+ resolution, it’s still big enough to watch your latest shows. We always praise the headphone jack, and wired headphones are the best way to enjoy audio on the Galaxy A12.
Samsung has also decided to ditch the rear-mounted fingerprint reader on the Galaxy A11. Instead, the Galaxy A12 uses a side-mounted option that’s quick, easy to use, and cleans up the overall look of the device.

Gracing the rear panel is a Samsung camera, flanked by a 48MP main shooter, which performs well outdoors for a budget camera phone (see the cover later in this review). Click on macro and ultrasound cameras for more flexibility. The camera app is easy to navigate, although it can take a minute or two to find the macro button because it’s hidden in more tabs.
Samsung One UI is one of the best Android skins on the market right now, and it’s just as good as the one on the Galaxy A12. In particular, the free Samsung app is like Google Discovery Feed, but with a twist. Instead of free news, Samsung has bundled Samsung TV Plus, Samsung Podcasts, Taboola News and Instant Plays. Best of all, you don’t have to spend a dime on any of it.
At least when it comes to charging, the Galaxy A12 is the battery leader. Power consumption was not a problem with two days of use between light gaming, answering emails and browsing social media.

Samsung Freeware might be a nice addition to the overall package, but Samsung hasn’t stopped deciding how much to add to Android. Unfortunately, the Galaxy A12 has a lot of apps that take up a lot of space. It comes with a suite of Google apps as well as Samsung apps, which brings a lot of benefits. There are even Microsoft options like Office, OneDrive and Outlook. You also have access to the Samsung Store, Galaxy Store, and Galaxy Store — how many people need two Samsung Stores and a Play Store instead?
The good news is that you can at least disable Microsoft-based bootloading, but that won’t help the Galaxy A12’s tendency to lag. The MediaTek Helio P35 often feels like it’s up to the task of powering the 6.5-inch screen, and jumping between apps slows things down even more. Limited RAM and storage don’t help, so you might want to check out the 4GB RAM/64GB storage variant if you can find one.

Although Samsung has installed a solid main lens on the Galaxy A12, the interesting external options are not always in good shape. The macro lens only offers 2 megapixels and it took a few tries to get the sharp enough image below. You won’t find a dedicated night mode on the Galaxy A12, so you may have to endure some trial and error after daylight hours.

While all phones add a bit of magic after you press the shutter button, the final result of the photos taken on the Galaxy A12 is much better than most camera apps show. For example, when I pressed the shutter button, the low-light image below looked noticeably darker, and the comparison image came out not as clean as you can see. Often this ends up being unexpected, but it makes evaluating your shots a bit more difficult. As you can see from my hairstyles, portrait mode wasn’t very good at defining edges either.
Samsung may have packed a solid battery into the Galaxy A12, but 15W charging speed is pretty low for such a cheap phone. I was only able to charge from 3% to 23% after 30 minutes and it took over two hours to fully charge.
The Samsung Galaxy A12 is a massive upgrade from the Galaxy A11 in almost every way. What this budget phone brings to the table is a decent 48MP primary camera, great battery life, and Samsung’s crisp and attractive One UI software. Unfortunately, the surround cameras lack punch and lag performance is disappointing, but that’s to be expected at this price point.
The Samsung Galaxy A12 is an upgrade over the Galaxy A11 in every way, making it ideal for first-time smartphone buyers.
Samsung Galaxy F12 First Impressions And Hands On Review
The Galaxy A12 has been around for a while, and Samsung’s budget phone has been replaced several times. The Samsung Galaxy A14 5G ($199.99 at Amazon) has switched to a Galaxy S23-inspired design that feels great in the hand. The latest model will receive further software updates after its launch in 2023. You can check out Motorola’s Moto G 5G ($249.99 at Amazon ), which sits in a similar spot in Motorola’s lineup. It uses the same plastic design and 15W wired charging, but it falls short of the upgrade Samsung promised. Another option to consider is the OnePlus Nord N300 ($228 at OnePlus). The cheapest Nord is all about simplicity, with two rear cameras and a clean black design. It also ranks first in wired charging speed.
