Apex predators stand out for many reasons. They are often characterized by their sharp fangs or claws, aggressive behavior, and stealthy approach to their prey. Samsung, which has long been one of the leaders of the smartphone market, is taking a similar step with its latest flagship product, the Galaxy S21 Ultra. The phone has a sharp design, an aggressive camera module and hidden power thanks to its killer specifications. The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what it is: an apex predator in the smartphone world capable of beating most of the competition.

After using the smartphone for almost a week and thinking about Samsung’s previous phones, it’s easy to see that the company is on its way. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 2020 is a solid first effort. It sets a blueprint for what to do next, even if it isn’t necessarily successful itself. Later, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra made improvements to the S20 Ultra’s design, although it didn’t go far enough. With the S21 Ultra, we finally see that Samsung has gone through its paces and delivered the phone that many people have been hoping for.

That doesn’t mean it’s perfect. Even the world’s top predators have flaws and weaknesses. While I agree with most of our initial review (see below), I have a few thoughts of my own. That’s it
Smartphone designs have become homogenous over the years, especially in the premium segment. You often get a large metal and glass slab with a large camera module on the back and a different screen on the front. The same thing happened to the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.
The phone is huge, but not as big as the S20 Ultra – and that’s what matters. The S20 Ultra is a bit too big. Samsung changed the screen size to a tenth of an inch and allowed it to reduce the size of the new phone by 2mm in height and slightly in width. This small measurement is a big deal. The size reduction, although small, makes a big difference in usability. However, Samsung couldn’t avoid adding weight, and the S21 Ultra is significantly heavier than the S20 Ultra by more than half a pound (229g).
Some will certainly complain about Samsung’s departure from microSD card support, but instead the Galaxy S21 Ultra builds on and improves on the design of the Galaxy S20 Ultra in all the right ways.

The ingredients are superior. The phone has a large metal frame surrounding the device and two glass panels covering the aluminum. Samsung went with a matte finish this year and I appreciate it. The glossy look of last year’s S20 Ultra was a bit much. The clean look of the matte surface is very attractive and the black color on our unit is very discreet.
There is no escaping the camera module. Last year, the module was a very ugly looking installed platform. It’s not smaller, but at least the S21 Ultra’s camera module doesn’t look outdated. Samsung extended the central frame up and around the camera module, protecting it with metal. I like that Samsung has integrated the design a bit more than on older phones.
As for the rest of the design, it works like a flagship product should. Most of the. Some people will certainly complain about Samsung moving away from microSD card support. I must have heard it. Samsung has long offered a microSD slot on its phones as a differentiator. There are no slots this year. But I think we have to accept it and move on. Most of today’s flagship phones don’t include memory card support and Samsung offers 256GB for just $50 more than the base price. That’s more than enough storage for most people.
You get it all: waterproof design, fast USB-C, stereo speakers and more. I just wish there were more color options available than just black, navy and brown.

Samsung is one of the world’s leading display manufacturers, and this is evident (again) in the company’s flagship products. The 6.8-inch screen is a pleasure to use and look at. It’s the only screen in the S21 family that offers a pixel-rich 3,200 x 1,440 resolution. Other S21 phones have Full HD+ displays. Samsung’s Super AMOLED technology is impeccable today and delivers incredible color, brightness and contrast. Don’t forget the super fast 120Hz refresh rate. You also get Corning Gorilla Glass Victus for protection.
I agree with our initial review that the limitations of the 120Hz display are frustrating. You can set the display to a consistent 60Hz regardless of resolution, but 120Hz is only available in adaptive mode. The meaning changes according to the activity. For example, the speed will drop to 10Hz if you’re just looking at the home screen and then increase to 120Hz when you’re gaming. I wish you could push it to 120Hz all the time, but I think Samsung limits this because of the potential impact on battery life.
I watched a few episodes of The Mandalorian, The Expanse and WandaVision on my phone and was impressed by the visuals. The S21 Ultra really knows how to handle video content. I was particularly impressed with the way he handled The Expanse, which is a dark show full of shadows and contrast.
Even though Samsung made the screen no longer functional, I think it messed up the other half of the cinema experience: the sound. The stereo speakers are certainly loud enough. No complaints there. I disagree with David’s assessment that the sound is very clear. In fact, I found the sound from the speakers quite muffled. This greatly affected my appreciation of the device as an entertainment platform, as it forced me to wear Bluetooth headphones for better sound. Often I like to watch videos casually without headphones. It works well, but the iPhone 12 Pro Max sounds much better.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Review: A Top Phone That’s Been Replaced
The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra has a lot of power and endurance. Our review highlights the power of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, which packs a punch against every other Android phone on the market (currently). Qualcomm’s premiere chip is sure to make its way into many flagship phones over the next year, so expect the competition between phones to heat up as time goes on.
Practically speaking, the S21 Ultra has more than enough processing power to handle any task you could throw at it. Games like Asphalt 9 and Fortnite do not tax the phone at all. I was able to multitask with ease, and running multiple windows didn’t seem to bother the phone at all thanks to the help of ample RAM.
The 5,000 mAh battery also takes a lot of punishment. For a phone with a screen this big and a processor this powerful, Samsung was able to fine-tune its energy algorithms for a full day of use and beyond. The phone never struggled with battery life, at least during a day of use. I end most days with at least 40% in the tank, if not more. That includes many games, YouTube, social networks and camera use. Bottom line: I often see one and a half to two days of battery life with the phone. That’s good.
If you’re upgrading from a phone that’s a few years old, you may have to run out and buy a new one. Bleh, Samsung.
The Samsung Galaxy Smartphone Annual Review: S21 Ultra 5g
As always, you can tweak your phone to maximize battery life. This includes raising or lowering the resolution, changing the refresh rate, maintaining brightness, managing background tasks and more.
The only complaint I have is the loading situation. Of course, Apple abandoned its charger first, but that doesn’t mean Samsung has to follow in its footsteps. Without a charger in the box, you’ll have to rely on the old bricks you have lying around. Perhaps even worse, the supplied cable is USB-C to USB-C. If you’re upgrading from a phone that’s a few years old, chances are the device you have is USB-A. That means you may have to run out and buy a brick. Bleh, Samsung.
Then there is 5G. All of Samsung’s modern flagship phones have 5G, as do some of its mid-range phones. 5G is considered essential for high-end phones. I tested the phone briefly on Verizon’s 5G mid-band and wasn’t impressed. This is not the fault of the S21 Ultra 5G. Verizon’s mid-band spectrum that is available where I live is not the same as its mmWave 5G. Most people who buy the S21 Ultra 5G will only see mid-band service, which is currently only as good as 4G LTE service. In other words, don’t get too excited about 5G just yet. Verizon’s MMWave will become more widely available over time, though mostly in urban centers.
Samsung wants its cameras to be the best in the world, and it’s taking a step in the right direction with the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Last year’s S20 Ultra was a bit of a mess
