Update S 21 Ultra Price Review – Once a year I get a Samsung Galaxy S-series smartphone for review. It’s good to know how much the product evolves every year. And since the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G has been launched for over a month, there are plenty of reviews to convince – or confuse – you. Instead of drilling into the specs, I want to focus on the personal user experience.
The retail package comes with just three components – the smartphone, a USB-C to USB-C cable and a SIM eject pin. For the price of S$1798 (256GB), I don’t feel like I’m getting value for money and was expecting more bells and whistles, like what Samsung offers for the Flip series.

But then again, we know that the smartphone itself is what you’re really paying for, and I applaud Samsung for coming up with a new design around the camera module that Samsung calls “contour-cut.” which blends the camera into the frame. Phone in a seamless design. Perhaps future iterations of the Galaxy series will see this design spread even further across the back of the phone. For now, the rest of the back has a matte finish, so no more fingerprint smudges at the end.

The front of the screen has a pre-installed screen protector. Although the glass is curved on the sides, the screen is not like its predecessors. I can barely notice the front-facing camera either because the hole is so small and undetectable, unless you’re watching video content where it draws you to that area, which is rare. The screen is bright enough for me to see content in bright daylight during the afternoon, but it’s not recommended to do so for too long, as it will increase the phone’s heat and drain the battery.
Overall, I’m not surprised when I use the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G as my everyday phone during the 3-week review. The interface is mature and feels smooth, but not very fast. It’s probably a design consideration to not accelerate the changes, but I like it fast and it shows that the processor is performing.
The S21 series is a second-generation device from Samsung that uses a 10x zoom lens that is interpolated to provide 100x spatial zoom. Camera quality in the zoom range has improved by leaps and bounds compared to the S20. I was able to capture full moon details on the S21 Ultra 5G compared to the S20 Ultra 5G.
At the ultra zoom end, image stabilization is excellent. It can really stabilize your shot. However, sometimes when I wanted to move my frame position, the stabilization would prevent the frame from moving and it would shift too much when it decided to frame again. There are also instances of “digital jitter” where the camera isn’t sure if it needs to stay still or move. I think with enough feedback this issue should be fixed with software updates.

While 5 round housings are visible inside the camera unit, there are only 4 lenses. Best picture trick from Samsung. There is a 12MP ultra-wide camera, a 108MP wide-angle camera, two zoom cameras (3x and 10x optical) with 10MP resolution. Some important technical details about the camera system: It supports 4K 60fps video recording in the zoom range, so you are not handicapped by a limited zoom range. It uses nona-binning – combining 9 pixels into one – to improve night mode.
Basically, with all this technology, you can leave it up to Samsung to decide when to use digital cropping and when not to, and when to use binning to reduce noise. The bottom line is that sometimes when I pixelate, I notice that some images are a little less detailed due to noise.
You can also shoot at 108MP resolution with the wide-angle lens, but no in-camera cropping is supported. From ultra-wide angle to ultra-zoom, I think you can count on the S21 Ultra camera to capture the full spectrum of your life.
Night shots are also very capable, and to be honest, it has become a reality for all smartphone cameras to record properly in low light. Just be aware of shaking hands and try to stay still while shooting the scene to allow the camera to do its job of absorbing as much light as possible so it can capture a more dynamic range.

It’s nice that the S21 series supports the S Pen, which I find very useful at times, but not essential enough to keep around all the time. So some people can leave the S Pen in a safe place and use it when needed.
I didn’t get to review the other S21 series, but based on the S20 experience, I think the S21 Ultra 5G will be the way to go. My reason: 100x spatial zoom is a killer feature not found in any other phone. Top it off with S Pen support. But if those two features aren’t on your wish list, there are plenty of other Android smartphones that can do what the Galaxy S21 can do in a lighter package and lower price.

Samsung has always focused on CMF (color, material, finish) for both the Galaxy S and Note lines, and the new S21 line is no exception. At the launch event, Samsung spent time explaining the long hours involved in creating the perfect black color finish. It finally settled on black film with fogged glass (Gorilla Glass Victus).
The result is a clean and smooth black finish that not only provides a good grip when holding the phone, but also keeps away smudges and fingerprints. Even after six months of use without a case or screen protector, the Gorilla Glass Victus is holding up well and hasn’t had any scratches so far.
The rear camera module is still there and the phone wobbles when placed on a table, but it’s not a deal breaker. The unit rotates completely into the body of the phone.

Samsung has gone with a slightly brighter screen (1500 nits) compared to the S20 Ultra (1400). Wide viewing angles and vibrant colors let you enjoy HD content with excellent clarity. Whether you’re playing games or watching content on Netflix or YouTube, the viewing experience is great. There’s a central hole cutout at the top of the screen for the front camera, but it doesn’t cause much of an obstruction when watching videos or playing games.
Unlike the Galaxy S20 Ultra, you no longer have to choose between the highest resolution and the highest refresh rate. Instead, you now get an optimal 120Hz refresh rate at WQHD resolution. One interesting thing about the display is that it uses LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) technology to ensure maximum battery life. This allows the display to intelligently switch between 10Hz and 120Hz depending on the content on the screen.
For example, in the case of a static wallpaper or when you are reading e-books, the refresh rate may drop to 10Hz. When playing graphics-intensive games or watching videos and movies, the screen’s refresh rate automatically increases to a maximum of 120Hz. There is an option to leave the refresh rate at a constant 60Hz, but you won’t be able to force it to run at 120Hz all the time, and that’s not a problem.
