The exterior is a soft plastic shell that has so far held up fingerprints, dirt, and dust very well. Much better than Apple’s silicone cases. Apple, as usual, kept things minimal. There are no buttons or controls.

The charging side of the battery has a light gray rubber pad to prevent slipping and is wrapped around the unique MagSafe shape. We’ve seen leather cases deform when connected to MagSafe — Apple expects users to do so.

Extending battery maintenance even further, if the iPhone’s internal temperature is high, the battery schedule will disconnect when the phone reaches 80%. High temperatures are also harmful to lithium batteries, so battery charging is stopped a little early to avoid further damage.

On the back of the battery pack, we can see that the advertised capacity is 1640 mAh, while third-party models are 5000 mAh. But as we’ve discussed in depth, that’s not a fair comparison — and this battery packs more power than it looks based on the milliamp-hour rating, which doesn’t tell the whole story.
We charged the iPhone 12 Pro Max from a dead battery and a fully charged MagSafe battery pack. The Dot took about two hours to discharge the battery pack and charged our iPhone to 53 percent.
