This diary/planner/creative outlet is the perfect place to track habits, mark important dates, prioritize to-do lists, de-stress with drawing, and reflect on what matters most in your daily life. Life I started my first bullet diary at the beginning of 2020 and it has been quite a journey this past year. From the necessary set of consumables to figuring out how a bullet journal can benefit me instead of feeling like a chore, I’ve learned a lot of important things along the way. I hope my five lessons in this process will be helpful to anyone who is either already keeping a bulleted list diary or considering starting one.
When I started journaling, I watched YouTube videos, read tons of blog posts, and followed new creative people on Instagram. And all of a sudden I had a detailed list of art and stationery that I felt I needed to have in order to be able to keep my bullet journal decently.

While I’ve enjoyed collecting all my Ecoline brush pens, Tombo brush pens, Zebra mildliners, watercolor sets, stickers and die cuts to bring my magazine pages to life, I don’t use them often. I tend to use multiple markers and colors at the same time and really only needed one set of watercolors rather than three. 2. Keeping a bullet journal takes time and patience. Make sure it doesn’t become a routine. Bullet journaling can be a lot of fun and fulfilling as you check off items on your lists and trackers, but it’s also time consuming. Even if you’re doing the bare minimum, you need to prepare months in advance for appointments (yeah, who’s got anything these days?!) and a diary page for important dates to remember. If you keep track of things like books read, movies watched, or even things like exercise and healthy habits throughout the year, it all adds up to the time update. Add to that the actual writing, and you’ll spend hours on the dot-grid pages of your diary.
In the second half of 2020, I lost my patience and interest, which meant that some of the trackers and pages I set up were half empty. Looks ugly, and in my diary a waste of space. In 2021, I’ve had more success with my bullet journal because I’ve realized what’s less for me (more on that in the next section). Now I understand better how long it takes to keep a diary. There’s a reason this takes special time and space: you can be more focused and attentive. It’s a work in progress for me, but I’ve found a few ways to improve it in 2021 so getting creative again and reflecting on your days feels less like work and more fun.
Before I started journaling bullets, I made a list of all the trackers I wanted to create and everything I wanted to collect in my journal. At the beginning of 2020, I spent hours creating all the trackers at the beginning of the magazine and did not update them for 6 months. I realized that I didn’t care about sleep trackers, for example, because I already knew the sleep patterns that best help me feel most rested. So why did I spend hours ticking the boxes to make these trackers work? They did not bring any benefit in my life. And that was the biggest thing that made bullet journaling seem like a chore rather than fun.

Over the past months, my bullet diary has changed and evolved. For example, when we went through the first quarantine in the UK, it was difficult for me to separate the days because I was stuck in a mess and doing so much work. So for several months I kept a “happiness journal,” writing down one thing a day that made me smile. Little things, but they made me realize that not every day is the same. At the time, I needed pages like this and I felt compelled to continue.
For the last few months I have been using my bullet journal as my personal diary. At the moment, I have more entries in my log than tracking, which is fine. I don’t have to keep track of anything right now, and if I forced myself to do it anyway, keeping a bullet diary would make me less fun again. I also currently use it to experiment with my art. If I find something new that I want to try, I do it for that month so I can practice.
Remember: the diary should always be what you need and need. Tailor it to your preferences and habits so that it benefits you, not gets in the way.
For me, it’s more of a reminder than anything else. When I saw all these YouTube videos and Instagram photos from experienced journalists, it seemed so simple to me. And their results were amazing. Although my pages can be very successful or unsuccessful. There are some that I like, and others that I think only spend a few hours experimenting with different materials and styles. It doesn’t look professional or coherent, but it’s something I made myself with no prior experience and I’m proud of it.

If you don’t have much time or interest in drawing intricate magazine pages, check out this Dutch instagrammer. Her pages are gorgeous and detailed, but she often uses craft paper, stickers, and other design elements that require fewer illustrations.
