Samsung’s Galaxy A series was updated in 2019 thanks to the decision to improve features and offer solid value. The Samsung Galaxy A50 might be the cream of the crop, but it’s only available online.

Fortunately, the unlocked version is now available for preorder from Amazon (h/t: SamMobile), for $350. And if you pre-order now, you’ll also get a Samsung Galaxy Fit fitness tracker. In addition, the seller says that the item will be released on September 20.

The Galaxy A50 ticks a few boxes for a mid-range phone in 2019, with a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED (FHD+) display, built-in fingerprint sensor, and 4,000mAh battery with 15W charging.
Samsung’s mid-range doesn’t fare so badly elsewhere, with an Exynos 9610 chipset, 4GB to 6GB of RAM, 64GB or 128GB of expandable storage. A 25 MP selfie camera in a water notch and a triple rear camera (25 MP, 8 MP ultra wide, 5 MP depth) round out the photography side.
Our own Dhruv Bhutani in his Galaxy A50 review found the device one of Samsung’s best mid-rangers in years. He praised the OLED screen, design and performance, but also liked the software experience compared to the Redmi Note 7 Pro.
“This phone doesn’t block you with extended permissions and doesn’t bug you, and it certainly doesn’t pop up ads. For me, and I can imagine a significant number of users, this is a huge improvement,” Dhruv wrote.

The only possible downside is that Samsung has already announced the Galaxy A50s, which offers a 48MP main camera instead of the A50’s 25MP sensor. But otherwise the A50s offers no other changes.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Smartphone Review
The Galaxy A50 is one of Samsung’s first A-series smartphones available in the US. At a decidedly mid-range $349, it offers a flagship design, a beautiful AMOLED display and a battery that will easily get you through the day. But with only average performance, a lackluster speaker, a poor fingerprint sensor, and a warranty for software updates, the Galaxy A50 simply doesn’t offer the same value as the $399 Google Pixel 3a.
The A50 looks like a flagship in every way. It is slim, thin and has an edge-to-edge screen which is unusual for phones in this price range. Apart from a small teardrop notch for the selfie camera, there are almost no bezels – another disadvantage at the price. It measures 6.24 by 2.94 by 0.30 inches (HWD) and weighs 5.86 ounces.
Turn the A50 over and you’ll see a shiny plastic back that’s almost blue in color. An adjustable triple camera stack sits on the top left, with a monochromatic Samsung logo in the center. While the design is certainly attractive, it suffered a lot of bumps and scratches during our review period.

Samsung Galaxy A50 Im Kamera Test: So Gut Fotografiert Ein Mittelklasse Handy
The top of the phone is bare, the bottom of the phone has a headphone jack, a speaker and a USB-C charging port. On the left you’ll find a hybrid SIM/microSD slot and on the right you’ll find the on/off switch and power buttons. The buttons are easy enough to reach, even for small hands, and provide a satisfying click when pressed.
The 6.4-inch AMOLED display is undoubtedly the A50’s best feature. The resolution is 2,340 by 1,080, for 403 pixels per inch, and everything looks amazingly clear, with vivid blacks and colors. The only drawback is the built-in fingerprint sensor. In testing, it only worked about 40 percent of the time, and with a dirty finger or a dirty screen, it never responded.
Like most phones in this price range, the screen uses Gorilla Glass 3, an older version of Corning’s reinforced glass that is more likely to break if accidentally dropped. Like the Pixel 3a and most other mid-range phones, the A50 is not water resistant, so we recommend a case to protect the phone from drops and water damage.
Samsung Galaxy A50 supports LTE bands LTE 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12, 13, 20, 25, 26, 28, 41, 66, 71. It is compatible with every US carrier and even band 71 available for the entire country. T-Mobile customers. In our tests on Verizon’s network in downtown Manhattan, we averaged data rates of 57.4 Mbps down and 64.8 Mbps up.
Samsung Galaxy A52 5g Review: A Lot To Like, But Hard To Love
Call quality is solid. The noise cancellation worked perfectly, and at 68dB the speaker is good for indoor conversations, although you may have some trouble hearing calls on a busy street. The speaker clocks in at 82 dB, which is loud enough to hear in a noisy room.
On the downside, the Galaxy A50’s downward-firing speaker is a disappointment. With a peak output of 93dB, it can easily fill a room, but sound quality tends to decrease at higher volumes, so you don’t want to rely on it for multimedia streaming. Thankfully, there’s a headphone jack for wired listening, as well as Bluetooth 5.0 for wireless listening and portable connectivity. NFC is also available for mobile payments.
There are three sensors on the back of the Galaxy A50. The main wide-angle sensor has a resolution of 25 MP and has an aperture of f/1.7. It is complemented by a secondary 8MP ultra-wide lens with an f/2.2 aperture and a 5MP depth sensor.
Most of our test shots looked sharp in daylight with the 25MP sensor and offered excellent depth of field, although there were a few with slight background blur. The ultra-wide sensor performed similarly, though we did see a shot with some slight distortion around the edges.
Galaxy A50 Review: Samsung’s Most Value For Money Mid Ranger Yet
For low-light photos with the 25MP sensor, most of our photos were acceptable, but a bit dull, with some background noise. Images taken with the ultra-wide lens had noticeable noise and some background blurring. There’s really no comparison here to the larger Pixel 3a, which has the absolute best camera you can get outside of an expensive flagship.
On the front of the phone is a 25 MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture. In bright light, subjects were well defined, background detail was sharp, and color accuracy was impeccable. Low-light images were also very solid, with good color accuracy and well-defined foreground details. There was a little background, but not enough to detract from the image. Then again, the Pixel 3a easily has the advantage in the camera department.
The Galaxy A50 is powered by a Samsung Exynos 9610 processor (like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 series) and 4GB of RAM. It also has 64GB of storage, of which 48GB is available as standard. If you need more space, the A50 supports up to 512GB of external storage via microSD card.
For basic tasks such as email, web browsing and social media, the A50 performs well. However, the A50 slows down quickly when more than half a dozen apps are open. Gaming is also hit and miss. We tested the phone with Asphalt 8 and experienced long loading times and occasional frame drops, but still managed to play without much frustration.
Samsung Galaxy A50 And Galaxy A30 Review
Benchmark scores support our practical findings. The phone scored 5,389 on PCMark, an application that simulates daily use. It’s significantly behind many competitors in this price range, including the Google Pixel 3a (7,378) and the Moto G7 Power (6,107).
A50 has a 4000 mAh battery. In our power drain test, where we streamed HD video over Wi-Fi at full brightness, the phone lasted 8 hours and 54 minutes on a full charge. That’s less than the Pixel 3a XL (9 hours, 22 minutes), but you shouldn’t have a problem getting through a full day of more conservative use. Fast charging is supported with a 15W adapter.
The Galaxy A50 comes with Android 9.0 Pie and Samsung’s One UI. In recent years, Samsung’s custom UI has been refined and doesn’t stray too far from stock Android. The most notable changes include a custom navigation bar, a suite of Samsung apps
