At Rs 20, 499, the Samsung Galaxy M31 (Review) continues to be a solid Android smartphone that sits at the top of the budget smartphone segment in India. When it was launched earlier this year, it offered great value for money, thanks to the waterdrop AMOLED display and 64 MP camera. The only thing holding the M31 back was its plastic body that felt rather cheap, and its lackluster gaming performance.

But do they add up? And how does the M31 v2.0 stack up against the competition? Let’s find out.
The “clastic” (plastic that feels like glass) back isn’t bad at all, and feels pretty premium compared to the M31. The “Mirage Blue” two-tone finish looks a bit flashy. The straight sides and slightly rounded corners look quite nice, as does the overall build quality. Yes, it picks up fingerprints, but you can wipe them off pretty easily.

I like how the power button (which also houses the fingerprint reader) is a little hard to press. I believe this is intentional so you don’t end up locking the phone when you tap the power button to authenticate an app. This was an issue when I reviewed the small, but mighty Galaxy S10e over a year ago. On the M31s, when you press the switch (correctly) it has a nice satisfying ‘click’ to it.
Most smartphone brands do not fit the hole. A large punch-hole cavity is often placed so deep into the viewing area that it takes up more than twice the space that the notification bar takes up on a regular smartphone with a notch.
Samsung does a very good job keeping the camera unit (or hole) small, and it sits just 3-4mm from the top bezel of the screen. The result? It doesn’t eat into the screen but essentially gives you more viewing space while taking up less space than a normal waterdrop notch would.

Super AMOLED panels are known for their deep blacks. The panel on this phone doesn’t disappoint, even if it can’t be compared to the good stuff you get in the mid-range with the A series. Some might prefer the vivid color mode ‘ default, but I felt it was a bit too saturated, with red looking border-orange. When set to ‘Natural’, the colors looked spot on and the deep blacks really made for a pleasant video streaming experience compared to normal LCD panels. Glare wasn’t a problem either, as the content was readable in direct sunlight.
Indeed, the screen is worth the extra money over the more affordable LCD alternatives from Chinese smartphone brands.
Given the Exynos 9611 chipset inside, the M31s doesn’t feel as fast as I’d like. But things are still pretty smooth, and I haven’t seen any difficulties in day-to-day use other than a few stutters when juggling between third-party apps.

One UI in itself is well designed, with large icons and an emphasis on one-handed use, where all UX elements (in native apps) come to the bottom half of the screen. Add that AMOLED screen to the mix and you’re also getting features like an always-on display, which — given the phone’s larger-than-usual battery — won’t affect battery life one bit.
If you’re not a fan of Xiaomi’s MIUI, then you should try One UI, it’s really better, without ads, on normal Android skins.
Sony’s 64 MP sensor gets the job done with warm color tones and an adequate level of detail whether it’s daylight or low light. In low light, the noise increases slightly, but is well controlled even in the darker scenes. Impressively.
Is It Worth Buying Samsung Galaxy M31
Switch to night mode and you might be a little disappointed. Image quality is average, with some aggressive noise reduction that results in a lack of detail in textures such as leaves, walls, etc. This happens especially when there is almost no light in the scene, like those shown below.
The biggest problem is that Night mode literally crops a huge portion of the scene to what appears to be almost a 2x crop compared to what you see in the window in Auto mode. Instead of the usual 16 MP output, you get a lower quality 7 MP image.
I understand that cutting the output of the sensor gives you more room for software adjustments (to compensate for hand movement). But clipping that much is really taking things a little too far.
In addition, there is no escaping this crop factor on the main 64 MP shooter in Night mode. Switch to the 12 MP ultra-wide camera in the same way, and the results are unusable and blurry at best.

The 5 MP Macro camera was impressive. It doesn’t include an autofocus system, so you’ll need to hold the camera steady in the sweet spot, which is 4cm – 5cm from your subject. The images are a bit soft, however the images pack quite a bit of detail like the ridges of a snail shell as you can see in the image above.
Selfies shot with the 32 MP camera come out quite nicely and have good dynamic range, but are a bit oversaturated. It delivers slightly blurry images in low light, but a “Night” mode is available that makes up for it.
Video recording in 4K, 1080p and 720p is surprisingly available on front and rear cameras, but both are also limited at 30 fps. Stabilization is very good, as is the frame rate, which remains constant. Photos in low light aren’t bad either, the camera only needs an extra second to lock focus on the scene or object.
The 6000 mAh battery is very long-lasting due to the impressive power consumption of the chipset and with occasional non-gaming use, it will easily last you two days. The 25W charger is fast and gets you up and running in about an hour and a half, which isn’t bad considering the battery capacity.

The Exynos 9611 chipset is no power hog. This is just about right for a phone that’s meant to entertain you, whether it’s casual gaming or streaming movies on that sAMOLED screen.
This chipset may not affect Samsung’s well-optimized OneUI, but it does affect gameplay. The 9611 can run most games at medium-low graphics settings, and things start to get scary at high graphics settings.
. After trying these games, it was clear that the M31s are not meant for gaming. The phone heats up with medium or high graphics settings, and also takes time to boil. This is a problem, and after about 45 minutes of playing, you will experience noticeable lag, slow loading of game characters, etc.
Unfortunately, this was an issue with the M31 as well, and Samsung seems to have missed an opportunity by keeping the same chipset, while building on better charging speeds and design. Qualcomm’s peers are better in this regard, and that obviously makes the Poco X2 (730G) a better choice if you have gaming on your mind.

Unless you’d rather avoid Chinese products, you can’t ignore the superior build quality of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro Max (Rs 16,999) and the Poco X2 (Rs 17,499), both of which feel more engaged. daily use, offer better cameras with more details and also get you great gameplay.
Their price is slightly lower but miss that gorgeous AMOLED screen, 6000mAh battery and the interface is familiar.
