In terms of appearance, the Galaxy M31 is surprisingly simple. It has no gradient, pattern or reflective coat. While we are happy to see this, it defies current trends and expectations. Some people may find the simple black and navy blue color option plain and dull (and the red color option has not been introduced, at least not yet). It remains to be seen how the glossy finish will hold up to scratches and scuffs, but it does pick up fingerprints with ease.
The front of the phone is pretty standard for a budget device these days. The chin is very thick and there’s a simple teardrop notch above the screen for a single 32-megapixel front-facing camera.
Samsung used a very bright Super AMOLED panel. Colors are crisp and clear, if a little saturated. We’ll tweak some settings and see how it works for us in a full review soon.
The battery, of course, makes this phone thick and heavy at 8.9mm and 191g respectively. It doesn’t feel unstable in your hand, and the back offers enough grip that the phone won’t slide when you have to reach the top corners of the screen with your thumb. The back is slightly curved to the sides, which helps with comfort, and we like that the camera module doesn’t protrude at all.

As for the module at the back, we have a 64-megapixel main camera using the Samsung ISOCELL GW1 sensor, an 8-megapixel Ultra-wide-angle camera, a 5-megapixel main camera and 5-megapixel depth sensor. There is a Live Focus mode and a night mode. Passing the camera app is very easy.
The power button on the right side is easily accessible, but the volume rocker above it is not. We are pleased that the fingerprint sensor on the back is not only large, but also easily accessible. Another disappointment, at least on paper, is that Samsung hasn’t upgraded the Exynos 9611 processor, which was used by many previous Samsung phones, including the Galaxy M30s. While our experience with the phone was very smooth, Samsung’s competitors are not sitting still and have very strong options in this price segment.
We’re excited to see Android 10, and Samsung’s OneUI 2.0 skin is almost polished.
