I’m still shocked that you can buy a £245 smartphone with a brilliant AMOLED screen and two-day battery life. For anyone who devours content on their phone, the Samsung Galaxy M31 is an absolute bargain, just don’t expect it to impress you in other areas.

Samsung A-series smartphones are a common sight in most UK stores, and for good reason. It aims to attract the same large mid-range crowd that Xiaomi and OnePlus are currently chasing. Despite this, the Galaxy M series is much less recognizable, despite being a key part of Samsung’s global legacy.

Hugely popular in India, the Galaxy M smartphones are trying to pack premium specs into an accessible format – at least on paper. The series recently got a major overhaul for 2020, with one of these handsets – the Samsung Galaxy M31 – hitting the UK market.

The Galaxy A series did a pretty decent job with the mid-range space, but can Samsung reapply the same trick even further down the price scale? It’s time to find out.

Measuring 159.2 x 75.1 x 8.9mm and weighing in at 191g, the Galaxy M31 is a solid phone by modern standards. Recently used to the lightweight nature of the Pixel 3a XL, compared to the M31 I felt like a mammoth. But with that extra weight comes a weight that lets you know it’s still a solid product, even if it’s at the affordable end of the spectrum.

In that space, the phone sports a 6.4-inch screen with a teardrop notch at the top and a minimal bezel at the bottom. At just £245, I’m surprised at how uncompromising the features of the front phone are. There’s even a 3.5mm headphone jack (albeit at the bottom).

As soon as you turn the phone over, everything starts to look a little different. For starters, the M31’s plastic pad is an absolute fingerprint magnet, and the smooth case itself doesn’t stick very well. If you are not completely sure that you will not drop your phone, we recommend buying a case just in case.

While there’s a bit of a camera hit, the camera’s four-sensor layout is barely noticeable whether you’re keeping the phone in your pocket or lying with the screen facing up on a table.

Samsung Galaxy M31 Review — Minor Yet Worthy Upgrade To Galaxy M30s

As with the A-series, Samsung’s marketing for the M-series focused on three primary features: display, camera, and battery life. While we’ll get to the last two in a moment, I’m happy to report that Samsung nailed it to the M31’s screen, which is arguably the phone’s best feature (other than the price).

The aforementioned 6.4-inch screen uses a juicy AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2340 x 1080, which ensures that whatever is on the screen, be it the background of the home page or the second showing of The Last Dance on Netflix (respect), always appears. .

Of course, even with this state-of-the-art FHD+ resolution, there’s no getting around the fact that if you want to immerse yourself in a full-screen experience, you’ll have to deal with the notch in action. Admittedly, it’s tiny compared to the seriously outdated Apple Shelves, but it’s still there.

The only other minor gripe is that, unlike the new Moto G 5G Plus, it has a basic 60Hz screen. But considering how few phones in this price range have jumped to 90Hz these days, it’s an excusable omission.

After getting used to using a simplified and almost flawless version of Android 10 on the Pixel 3a XL. Samsung’s own skin feels very clunky, though it’s not the worst.

For example, there is very little bloatware apart from various Samsung apps that have their uses, but why I would ever use the Galaxy store when there is a Google app store is beyond me.

However, fortunately for the M31, everything works quite well despite its affordable price. This is due to the Samsung Exynos 9611 SoC processor and a solid 6 GB of RAM under the hood. Don’t expect blazing speed from the M31, but this setup delivers pretty decent performance where it counts.

For example, the dedicated fingerprint sensor is fast and reliable (probably more so than some in-screen fingerprint sensors I’ve come across on more expensive phones). The same goes for face unlock, with a cool little animation popping up just below the front camera to let you know it’s doing its thing.

Still an annoying problem that kept popping up, however, was the inexplicable incompatibility with certain wearables. While things seem to have calmed down after a few software updates, the phone initially dropped calls regularly to my Whoop 3.0 Band and TicWatch C2 Plus. If you’re not a fan of smartwatches, you’ll probably never run into this problem, but for a fitness fanatic like me who loves keeping track of health stats, this has become a real pain in the ass.

If you like to play mobile games during your lunch break, the M31 should handle most titles – just don’t expect to be running Fortnite on it anytime soon. As the presenter pointed out, the Galaxy M31 is not one of the phones currently optimized for playing Fortnite, and dipping into the game revealed a precarious, barely playable mess. Surprisingly, the M31 had no problems running online matches in Call of Duty: Mobile, with smaller titles like Alto’s Odyssey doing well.

I’m putting the blame on my aging laptop which has a bit of a problematic wifi connection but in this new work from home environment I’ve opted to use my phone as my main device for zoom calling and listening to music, watching a workout indoors and watching YouTube content in lunch time. Suffice it to say that I was charging the battery in the Galaxy M31, but that’s it
