Ever since the iPhone 12 hit retail stores, I’ve been getting messages from friends and family asking for my thoughts on Apple’s latest product. I’ve been getting calls from friends who use iPhone 5s but are now looking to upgrade to a new iPhone. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t surprised.

My conversations with those close to me revealed that they want a better looking iPhone, but expect it to have a bigger screen and better cameras and faster performance. The smaller iPhone 12 box itself shows some changes inside, such as the earphones and charger. I think Apple did well by removing the recorder and headphones from the product box. I also don’t care about power bricks or Lightning EarPods. Since I’m using the same charger that came with the iPad, I don’t think I’ll bother removing the charging adapter from the iPhone box. At 6.1 inches, it’s larger than the iPhone 6’s screen size, but it’s not a huge phone. In fact, the iPhone 12 is a very large phone – not too small, not too big. I understand that iPhone 5s/6 owners will need time to get used to the size and shape of the phone’s screen.
The iPhone 12 uses an OLED display, which is a nice upgrade over the LCD screen of the iPhone 11. If you’re planning to upgrade to the iPhone 12 from an LCD iPhone 5s or iPhone 6, you’ll notice a big difference. OLED displays display vivid colors and offer better contrast and deeper blacks. You will start to see changes when you open other programs and read articles. But the screen on the iPhone 12 also has something called Ceramic Shield that Apple says offers 4x better performance. I have no intention of intentionally dropping the controller, but the tempered glass should make the phone more durable over time.
Although the main/larger camera on the iPhone 12 is exactly the same as the iPhone 11, taking pictures was better than the previous generation models.

I’ve taken over 20 photos in different lighting conditions on the iPhone 12 and iPhone 11 in the last 48 hours. I can’t tell the difference, but taking photos in low light is usually better on the iPhone 12. I’m also very happy with the front camera on the iPhone 12. The iPhone 12 is powered by Apple’s A14, the same chip that also powers the new iPad Air. I don’t want to go into CPU and GPU since the general public only wants to know how fast the phone is. What I am saying is that the iPhone 12 feels faster and lighter than I expected. Switching between apps is fast and games load quickly. In the short time I had the phone, Face ID worked well. With the iPhone 12, I drink more than a day’s worth of water. On the first day, I took out the iPhone 12 at 12 noon when it charged. I consider myself a heavy user.
