Big, strong and very capable. If you are looking for the best Samsung Galaxy S21 model and money is no object, the Ultra is for you. It’s a huge improvement over the S20 Ultra, fixing focus issues and improving battery life. But it is very expensive, especially when the standard S21 has become cheaper.

The Ultra was launched alongside the more standard Samsung Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21 Plus and is the highest-end model. So if you want to take the device, you’ll need a full backpack.
With up to 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, a 120Hz WQHD+ display and a 108-megapixel camera, this is Samsung’s attempt to be uncompromising and deliver the best Android phone.
But considering the standard S21 is cheaper and gets the job done, should I spend £1149/€1249/$1199 on a phone again? Here’s what we found after thoroughly testing the handset:

Taking the phone out of the box, it’s immediately clear that the two most notable areas where Samsung has improved over the previous S20 Ultra have to do with the S21’s screen and design. None of them were particularly dirty, but the forces of change, big and small, made it the device that Samsung should have launched when it introduced the ‘Ultra’ brand for the first time this year.

The screen, in my opinion, is the real star of the show. If you value a quality display above all other features, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra will make a great first impression.
It’s large at 6.8 inches, has slightly curved edges, and can reach a maximum brightness of 1500 nits, according to Samsung. Unfortunately, due to lock limitations, I didn’t have a colorimeter to check these numbers, but in real-world use they performed very well. Play some HDR videos through Netflix. I used Modified Carbon with neon light as a test. You can actually see the light coming by itself. It may be small compared to the displays on other technologies you may have at home, but the S21 Ultra’s screen is more capable.
In a more practical way, this brightness level eliminates the risk of visibility issues even in very sunny conditions. Even using it in direct sunlight, I had no problem reading the screen.
In a move that shows how much Samsung is positioning this phone as the ‘true’ S21 flagship, this is the only phone in the three groups that offers a refresh rate that can go between 10Hz and 120Hz and maintain 1440p WQHD. to resolve. The icing on the cake is that these two features can be used together. That is something that was not possible on Samsung 2020 phones.

It might be hard to tell how much of a difference the refresh rate can make without holding the phone in your hand, but you’ll definitely miss it when your phone isn’t available. Everything feels faster, smoother, and more responsive. This effect is more welcome as the number of games that offer high-speed options increases.
The refresh rate adjustment mode offers interesting benefits through improved battery life. The idea is similar to how ProMotion works on Apple’s iPad Pro, which moves the speed of the display up and down so that energy is not wasted when there is no visible gain.
For example, when you’re just watching a 30fps YouTube video or a 24fps movie on Netflix, there’s no guarantee of running at 120Hz. Refresh rates solve this problem, saving battery life in the process.
There is an ‘Eye Comfort Shield’ option which is very welcome to reduce some of the bright whites to make the screen appear orange. Of course, you should turn this feature off when you want accurate colors. But in the evening and early morning, I found the screen easier on the eyes.

We also found the S21 Ultra’s in-display fingerprint scanner to be a step up from the S20 family. Faster and more reliable than previous Samsung phones I’ve tried. Out of 50 unlock attempts, the S21 Ultra ignored thumb presses only 5 times. This number was around 15 on the Note 20 Ultra.
At a time when even the benefits of a good face unlock system are hampered by wearing a mask, having fast body sensors is more welcome than ever.
My only issues with the screen are minor. I still prefer completely flat rather than curved, as the edges cause annoying reflections and contribute to accidental pressing. The default ‘bright’ mode is too saturated for my taste, especially when displaying bright colors. The ‘Natural’ option gives you more… good, natural, well-balanced, true-to-life colors. This is the setting we recommend most people use.
It also completely ignores video enhancement options. This is because it makes the video too bright and often uncomfortable to watch. Aside from these issues, this is the best screen on any phone right now.
Buy The Samsung Galaxy S21 5g On A Plan
I would like to say that the Galaxy S21 Ultra is the best in terms of design. But you’ll need to master the big phone to use this beast. It weighs 228 grams, the same as the iPhone 12 Pro Max, and with the added case it is even heavier.
But compared to Apple’s bigger phones, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is a better phone. The slightly thinner, rounded sides make it more comfortable in the hand than the rough edges of the 12 Pro Max we tested last year.
The most notable change is the new camera module, which is now part of the phone’s overall design rather than looking like it was squeezed back in at the last minute.
Large modules combine with metal rails and stand out for results. Combined with a new finish available in black or silver, you have a phone that looks futuristic without being flashy.

The buttons near the sides are audible and responsive, and even have the requisite IP68 rating to prevent accidental scratches while being a little on the thin side. Those hoping for the reintroduction of the 3.5mm headphone jack will be disappointed, as there is currently no microSD in the SIM tray either.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra’s camera system looks terrible at first, but it has the potential to be one of the best camera phones by the end of the year. Instead of following the lead of Apple and Google, where most of the camera work is done using a computer in the background, Samsung hopes to lead the way in image quality by using high-quality glass for its camera lenses.
For the most part, I am fascinated by phone camera technology. We tested it in a variety of shooting situations and found it to be one of the most versatile cell phone cameras out there. No other phone, including the iPhone 12 Pro Max, offers so many ways to shoot. The zoom technology is great, a very noticeable improvement over the Galaxy S20, and being able to shoot video from multiple cameras at once is a neat trick I’ve used a few times.

If you’re willing to lose some of the camera’s zoom capabilities and free up more phone storage space (about 30 MB per photo during testing), you can easily switch to full 108MP photos. This is a pain, but when I do that, I get the 108MP option and the camera shines.
