The Samsung Galaxy A12 is an affordable smartphone, with everything from battery life to an imaginative and attractive design, but all these good things come with a lot of problems as the day-to-day performance is very sluggish.

On paper, this sounds very attractive, but how does it stack up in practice? The Motorola Moto G8 sets this price point, and unfortunately, the Galaxy A12 is less than the sum of its parts.
Of course, this is a matter of personal preference, but in our ranking, the Samsung Galaxy A12 is one of the best plastic phones you can buy.
A matte finish runs along the sides of the phone, and a shallow back diagonal design covers the upper back. The lower part does not spoil the appearance and creates two beautiful faces.
The four rear cameras are placed in a square module and are less exposed than similar configurations of other phones, but the device only protrudes to prevent the phone from being placed on a tablet.

It’s nice to include a headphone jack and microSD card slot, and there’s a mono speaker on the bottom edge.
The volume rocker and power button, which doubles as a fingerprint scanner, are mounted on the right side of the phone, requiring no adjustment to your grip.
The Galaxy A12 is impressive considering that it has a 6.5-inch PLS display surrounded by thick bezels and a curved notch housing the selfie camera.
With a resolution of 1600 x 720 and a pixel density of 270ppi, the display is sharp enough for most people’s needs.

Viewing angles are also tight, with the only real letdown being brightness. The maximum yield is obtained if required in hot weather.
The Galaxy A12’s four cameras definitely look the part. A 48-megapixel primary camera, a 5-megapixel ultra-wide camera, a 2-megapixel macro camera and a 2-megapixel depth camera make it feel like a smartphone that takes pictures seriously.
However, bear in mind that this is a sub-£200 device. Anyone hoping for an answer that can give the Google Pixel 6 a run for its money will want to, but get your hopes up, at least you’ll be satisfied with the best lighting conditions. Check out a selection of photos below.

It’s a surprising omission considering the wide range of shooting options available, including portrait, food, macro and professional modes.
Portrait mode is ubiquitous these days and lets you adjust the depth of field to whatever height you want; Menu mode is like portrait mode for tablets instead of face; Macro mode is designed for close-up photography, but leaves something to be desired (see screenshot above); Pro Mode lets you dive deep into the camera and zoom in as far as you like.
The Galaxy A12 offers a quick switch between the standard camera and the ultra-wide camera, which can take great photos from very different angles, but while it looks attractive on the phone’s screen, it doesn’t look great. It’s very hot on the big screen even after scrolling or zooming.
On the front of the phone is an 8-megapixel selfie camera that supports portrait, pro, macro and food modes. The first two we can understand, the second not so much.

So far so good. Unfortunately, Samsung’s biggest compromise is in the display department.
The Galaxy A12 is without a doubt the slowest smartphone I’ve ever used. It only takes a second to register each connection and connection, which makes opening apps, taking photos, texting, frustrating, and sometimes very annoying. Did you fall? No, it just takes time.
The Galaxy A12 is so slow that no matter how many times the lag stops everything, you’ll be forced to scroll through the screen again, convincing yourself that maybe you didn’t touch the screen right the first time. But you usually did. I’ve never experienced this much lag on a phone before.
Amazingly, I can play intense games like Asphalt 8 while running without any pain or symptoms.

The Galaxy A12 runs Android 11, but Samsung’s OneUI skin isn’t clean. Prepaid apps that I don’t need include Samsung’s own web browser, Galaxy Shop, Samsung Global Goals, and Facebook.
Considering how well the A12 works, its tendency to encourage me to use the productivity-focused preinstalled apps like OneDrive, Office, and Outlook is laughable.
Battery life is the most impressive feature of the Galaxy A12; Whether you’re streaming or gaming, you can get through the day without a hitch. Use it wisely and you will only have to pay every two days.
In real life, an hour of streaming Netflix drained the battery by 7%; half an hour of intense play (Asphalt 8) ate 6%; and half an hour of light play (Three) took another 2%. That’s 15% of battery life for two hours of entertainment. Music barely slowed down, with one hour of online streaming draining 2% of the A12’s battery, while one hour of downloaded music drained the Galaxy A12’s battery by just 1%.

However, charging the Galaxy A12 is no fun. Using the charger provided in the box, it took 1 hour 35 minutes to charge the phone from 0% to 50% and 3 hours 25 minutes to fully charge.
A good cheap phone with a long battery life: Samsung makes great phones even at this end of the market, which helps with longevity.
It’s hard to fault a £169 smartphone that looks good and lasts long between charges, but the Galaxy A12’s performance poisons the well. Too lazy to recommend to anyone.
The good news is that all hardware can be purchased at a reasonable price without compromising the user experience. The Motorola Moto G8 costs £179 and the Galaxy A12 does everything well, but without the lag.
