Sony, along with Panasonic, have a tradition of delivering the most accurate color reproduction out of the box, virtually eliminating the need for calibration. First of all, I can reveal that this is also true of the huge 85-inch Sony XH95 I received for testing. The largest model of the best LCD series for 2020. With Google Assistant built right into the TV, you can talk to the Sony XH95 when it’s on. Just say “Hey Google! or “Okay, Google!” and try different commands. Although remote control is much more convenient in most cases, voice can be nice if, for example, we can see the image from your smart call or surveillance camera when everything is happening outside. If you think Samsung and TCL’s QLED technology is unique, it’s just one of many color filter options with so-called quantum dot technology. Or quantum dots. LG calls its technology nanoLED, while Sony has Triluminous. Surely there must be something that is difficult to say.
The idea is to use a semiconductor color filter with tiny holes called quantum dots. The material will reproduce a color whose wavelength exactly matches the dimensions of the holes. The advantage of this technology is that you avoid color casts, because the color filter simply cannot reproduce the wavelengths (color shades) between the primary colors. The result is much purer color than using a conventional pigment filter.

Lg Uhd 85 Series 86 Inch Class 4k Smart Uhd Tv W/ Ai Thinq®
Like everyone else this year, Sony uses artificial intelligence and deep learning to upscale low-resolution images to 4K and preserve detail while suppressing artifacts. It works and should be used. But for true 4K material I prefer the lowest possible processing.
By choosing Netflix Calibrated mode, you are guaranteed optimal Netflix video playback. Sony has calibrated the TV to be similar to reference OLED monitors used in studios.
For other inputs and applications, I quickly checked the X-Rite i1 and found that the film mode with Custom 1 color calibration produced the correct white point.
When using Dolby Vision content on Netflix, I used Dolby Vision Dark with the lights off and Dolby Vision Light in a bright room. Dark is the same picture that cinemas should provide (only better, you don’t get that HDR effect in some Norwegian cinemas!), but sitting in complete darkness and watching movies and TV is so rare that Dolby Vision. Light is most often used. To emphasize details in shadow areas.

You can also set the TV to automatically adjust to ambient light levels, but as practical as this is, I prefer to do it myself.

One of the problems of many TVs is the so-called color band in the shades. It’s easy to see pictures of the sky at sunset, for example. Where there should be a smooth gradation from the yellow of the sun to a pink background that slowly but surely fades to blue, there are many TVs that reproduce this in overly coarse increments. This makes the sky almost look like layers of an onion split down the middle.
Everyone is working hard on this, especially Sony. Sony solves the problem by converting 8-bit and 10-bit video to 14-bit, so color bars are virtually non-existent on the HX95.
With local dimming in the darkest scenes, you see a lot of detail in shadow areas that you wouldn’t otherwise see on LCD screens. At least not if you want to keep deep black levels. You get the best of both worlds here, and with the room lights on, it’s hard to see any flaws compared to the neighboring LG 2019. OLED TV. Viewing angle aside, the Sony was very good (much better than the Samsung Q70R), just not up to par with the OLED, which is near perfect in that regard.
